The problem with a national primary is that it would make the personal-interaction, “retail politics” concept completely a thing of the past; even if you had public finance, the contest would revolve entirely around media. I’m sure that the TV networks would love that — the rest of us, not so much.

I agree public finance is a must. But I’d add to that, rotating regional primaries. Break the country into eight chunks, approxmiately the size of “west coast (CA, OR, WA) plus AK and HI”, “southwest (NV, AZ, NM, TX)”, etc. Each cycle, shuffle a different set of four regions to the front, then after they’ve all gone, wait a couple weeks, then have everybody else.
