I find it appalling that anyone would refer to liberty as a mere “talking point.” Partisan leftists need to understand that when conservatives talk of liberty we hold the concept as a cherished principle. The only way to guarantee liberty is to restrict the power of government as much as possible. As a nation we have done a very poor job of that over the last 232 years. And, yes, George W. Bush is as guilty of expanding government as any president before him. I will never forgive him for betraying his conservative principles. But this election is not about Bush.
The current election is a referendum on Obama. He’s a socialist. If you believe in socialism, vote for him. But understand at least that government redistribution rarely benefits the people on the lower rungs. The poverty rate in this country has remained at about the same rate from 1964 to the present. America suffers an endemic underclass, only now due to government efforts the problem has become generational. Leftists might ask themselves why. Well? I’ll answer the question for you: placing more national wealth in the hands of government can have only one result . . . more government.
The part that scares me, and it should scare you, too, regardless of your political persuasion, is the media attempt to destroy a fellow American because he dissented. It’s not about Joe’s dreams, his perspective, or his politics. He has the right to dissent without being persecuted for it. He could be a complete moron, but he still has unalienable rights. What the media is doing is pure political thuggery.
And understand, my leftist fellow citizens, why conservatives fear an Obama presidency. We have a perspective on history. All the signs indicate that Obama is much more than a garden-variety socialist. He suffers from numerous character flaws which his supporters in their ardor for change fail to see. For God sakes, people, the man is a politician with all the potential for deception inherent in his profession. If we truly had in this nation a system that limits government, I could live with an Obama presidency. But we don’t, not anymore. The desire on his part for even more power, even before he’s elected, is a bad sign.
If Obama is not elected, our inner cities will burn. If he is elected, the republic will burn. Sometimes the choices are between bad and worse. And if leftists do not understand to what extent conservatives will defend liberty, then they haven’t studied history. It’s not a talking point. Liberty is something more valuable than life itself. We face dark times ahead.
