I just saw “W”. It totally sucked. Stone couldn’t decide if it was going to be serious, or funny or journalistic. It came off as just a pathetic depiction that even I thought was not cool. The clips that were funny in the commercials were completely unfunny in the context of the scenes from which they were taken. And (like Kyle Smith says) the songs that were chosen do not fit the scenes and imply humor at innappropriate moments. It was clear Stone chose the worst examples of Bush quotes and mannerisms to stoke the characterization of him as an imbecile, but in some ways Bush’s manner and mental state in the movie made him appear semi intellegent despite Stone’s efforts. If the movie had been funny as we were led to believe it would be, the songs and the stupid characterizaton might have pulled it together but but it wasn’t so they didn’t. I was expecting the best from “W” but have to admit some of what Kyle Smith wrote was right. But it really wasn’t any more of an insult to the 62 million Bush voters than it was (in my opinion) to the 62 million Bush haters. I wanted red meat and all I got was day old pudding!
