Having grown up around those exclusionary country clubs, I can say that it was not a GOP stronghold. It was a money and birth family issue. The Republicans that were members, were almost exclusively liberal Republicans. (Think Nelson Rockefeller) Neither were they Christian. Any church going was strickly for show, not as a lifestyle. If you belonged to the wrong church (i.e. one that followed a Christian lifestyle), you were also excluded.

They were quite proud socially though, that they were “enlightened” enough to allow Jews, Baptists, Catholics, Blacks, Italians, Irish, etc to work at their country clubs and be in their presence. I had the privelege of working as one of their caddies. Our pay was tips, and generally, they would pull out a large tip ($5-10 at the time), only to withhold it and give me a quarter or two, telling me that I would be tempted to spend that much money inappropriately, so they would spend it for me to better provide for my needs. (My food and rent never seemed to fit into their idea of my needs.)

History is being rewritten enough by the progressive/liberal factions, that it does not need to be done here.
