While I may have overstated “no prior claims,” certainly in a hypothetical situation where Turkey agrees to the swap, there would be far less uproar than the current situation. Also, there is just something deeply psychological about geography. Look at a map and see the area I’m referring to. It undeniable lies within Europe and never was anything other than considered European until the Ottomans took over. Compare that to where Israel lies today, and I think you’ll understand what I’m getting at. One more thing, Constantinople was built there originally because it is an extremely strategically defensible area. Especially when you consider NATO is covering your back. The exact opposite is true of Israel’s location–and always will be.

Positioning the land of the Jews between the Muslim and Christian worlds might also prove to be highly symbolic in itself. After all, the Jews are no longer exclusively people of the Middle East as they were two thousand years ago, but rather are more a product of western culture, not to mention a great deal of western bloodline. Quite simply, the Jews are not the same people who walked out of the holy land.
