I can understand your points and no one is saying that it is 1980, but we do need a strong leader. This one just needs to cut government. I agree that there was a time for Social Security, but now is not it either. We need to take responsibility for ourselves and not expect the government to be there to hand us a check. If we allow people to save their own money (which they won’t do of course) then we could get the government out of pensions.
Now there will always be those that can’t or won’t prepare for the future and we will have to provide for them, but those who can and will should not be penalized for those who won’t. I think people want what is coming to them because they paid so much money in to these programs, but if the young workers didn’t have to pay in then they would no longer expect anything back.
I do believe that if you are able you should work and contribute to society and if not then you should be helped, but it shouldn’t be a lifestyle choice. Ask California if they enjoy paying billions of dollars to those who do nothing to add to the society. California is bankrupt because of social programs. Hawii stopped universal health care for children because those who could afford health care stopped paying so the state had to pay.
You can find examples to support both sides, but it should not be a federal issue unless it crosses statelines. I agree that some regulation is good for protection, but not good when it forces dumb practices like lowering mortgage standards. This just shows that we need to meet in the middle and not at the extremes. Americans are reasonable, but don’t want to be screwed over by the government, big business, or each other.
