Exchanges of this kind don’t seem fair. Writers like Spencer always come off as the winners, because they know all there really is to know about atheism. The atheists, on the other hand, almost always display such hilarious or appalling ignorance about religion that it’s impossible to take them seriously. This is evident even to readers like me who are not particularly religious, but have absorbed knowledge just from being raised in religious homes or communities. At least 80% of what Derbyshire has to say about religion is based on his abysmal ignorance, and must only seem persuasive to those who share it.
