JOseph Marshall – I’m the anti-you. I, too, am disabled and living on SSDI, but if they were to have a vote to abolish Social Security & Medicare, I would vote to abolish it. I wouldn’t worry. I would make out somehow. Maybe not as well, but I would function. As long as it’s here, I will use it, as I paid into the system.

Welfare reform was introduced by the Pubs in the Clinton years. Surprise, surprise! It actually helped people get off the government teat, and they were better thereby. I personally believe that most would be better off without this system, as with most government safety nets. Admittedly, some would die without it, but like the other guy said… I don’t care. Even if that someone is me!

So, don’t ask me to sympathize with you about all the suffering people. I was brought up poor. I’ve lived among poor people all my life. It is blatantly obvious to me why these people are poor. I know what a mess their own decisions have made of their lives. I have no pity for them, nor any for myself. I know what my mistakes were. I take full responsibility.

The terrible thing about social safety nets is that they make it okay to fail. They take away a man’s hunger and his dignity. They actually encourage failure. That’s why we had generations on welfare, until the Republican revolution put a time-limit on it. It’s scarier without it, you’d think, but that’s because productive people are unaware of how bad it is to be in the system.

If I didn’t have one foot in the grave, I would change my situation. But, I’m not gonna throw a pity party for myself to make myself believe that it’s okay to be in the system, or that the system itself is okay.
