Americans are likely to emulate the French if the liberals succeed in establishing a European-style welfare state: those who are less enterprising will remain here but work less, since the incentive to work will be reduced. — Laurent
I’m reminded of the difference between the two classes of people in Jerry Pournelles Falklenberg series; ‘citizens’ and ‘taxpayers’.

Those who are more ambitious and enterprising will leave, just as a half million young French people have emigrated to less confiscatory locales (e.g., London). — Laurent
Not that there’s anyplace else to go that wouldn’t treat them any different, or worse.
