I read, many years ago, a critic say that it’s “okay to pan,” but that you mustn’t simply dismiss a movie — that that constitutes disrespect for the investment of time, money, and talent, regardless of whether it went for good or for ill, and that’s bad for moviemaking as a whole. What I glean from the review snippets Mr. Toto presents here is that the critical Left has decided that it’s okay to dismiss a movie that quarrels with their political convictions. They’d rather endure whatever damage to cinema might follow than grant even a scintilla of respect to a conservative-leaning film.
Somehow, I don’t think they’ve recovered from David Mamet’s defection yet.
