The most on-target thing written about this seems to be an early posting by semiotician Jon Barnes describing the Baghdad Diary pieces as the product of a Master of Fine Arts program graduate looking to be the next Hemingway or Fitzgerald (F. Scott, not Patrick). Add sociopathic manipulation and a loose acquaintance with the concept of truth, and there you are.
