I agree. I’ve read biographies of Hitler and seen documentaries. I can understand, to a degree, how he ended up where he did. However, nothing in his background provides me with any moral grounds to forgive him. He wasn’t “driven” to become a genocidal dictator by some unique trauma in his past. His WWI trench and his Vienna halfway house were filled with luckless men like him who did NOT go on to murder millions of Jews. His life was nothing special until he had his “political awakening” and discovered his gift for public speaking. The choice was entirely his. Sorry – understanding does not equal forgiveness.
