Chambers, to understand is not to forgive. I understand that Stalin, Mao, and Hitler all went mad with power, but I don’t forgive them for their tyranny. If anything, what requires comprehension, if the world is to avoid disaster, is the political and economic conditions which put them into power. Here is a sample: Hitler may have wanted a Thousand Year Reich, Stalin may have wanted a worldwide dictatorship of the proletariat, and Mussolini may have wanted to rebuild the Roman Empire. But, what the average Nazi, Soviet Communist, and Fascist wanted was a secure, well paid government job.
