Chavez’s popularity is high among the disadvantaged and disposessed, but only through sheer social-program bribery. Even the academic left has been turning on him, and the Venezuelan middle class (which is substantial) despise him.
And what is this “colonial economy” crap? I do agree that the “haves” in Venezuela have used class distinction to keep as lot of Venezuelans down (to their eternal shame), but Venezuela has been nobody’s “colony” for a very long time.
