actually, what you prefaced his remarks to the church group with (how he’s really a tough, no-tolerance type with unruly thugs), I found that to be encouraging; it made his later remarks seem like mere agitprop, which as you noted, is at times necessary in dealing with the unavoidable political elements of the job. If he didn’t play it on both sides in now way whatsoever, he’d be politically stymied from doing his job, as there are plenty of examples of officials who’ve gone down that road.
