In the Waco hearings, the U.S. Senate Democrats under Charles Schumer did the same thing, turning an inquiry into BATF’s missteps and the FBI’s subsequent bungling of the “siege” into a show trial of the NRA, basically saying, “If you had just let us ban guns decades ago, this wouldn’t have happened!”
This is roughly equivalent to the neighborhood bully throwing a rock through your picture window, and then having his parents tell you “If you hadn’t put that window there, this wouldn’t have happened!”
True as far as it goes. But it fails to address the real issue. That being the ambitions, illegalities, and plain incompetence of the BATFE- all of which are an old story. So old that at some point, we must not merely acknowledge that BATFE is a failed, rogue agency, but abolish it altogether, and permanently.
And this is of course exactly what the Democrats’ “minority hearings” are intended to prevent. BATFE has simply been too useful to progressives, as a club for beating people they hate over the head. (I.e., gun owners, whom they consider semantically equivalent to racist white rednecks.) As long as BATFE exists, it allows them to both constantly attack a “culture” they despise, and feel good about themselves while doing it. Plus increasing their power over the peasantry, whom they consider themselves superior to.
Which is exactly what “progressivism” is all about.
