I agree with Carl. Hapless was a very poor choice of words. It probably wasn’t what you even meant.
You were going for something like naive, pollyanna, guileless, or something like that right?
Someone who goes into dangerous situations but who is not really aware of the danger. A Mr Magoo type perhaps? Somehow despite being unaware of the danger always coming out unscathed. Someone who would walk into a minefield to smell a pretty flower.
You were looking for a word to describe that, right?
