This is really about Saudi Arabia. Of course the Persians want the Bahrainians to sink this fleet…it is really just a provocation for a bigger objective to bring the Saudis into a conflict thereby pitting Sunnis vs Shites. It is also an effort to pull Obama’s chain because the only naval forces in the region able to stop them is the US fleet. The real question is whether a weak US president will act. They are betting he will not.
The Saudis will be interesting to watch. Currently they have but three or four small corvettes in the Persian Gulf. Watch to see if they move their frigates from their other coast to support the Bahrain government.
