Secretary Rice has confided, in <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/46babd5a-f136-11db-838b-000b5df10621.html" rel="nofollow">an interview</a> with The Financial Times, her heartfelt hopes that Iranian foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, will deign to stop in at the Iraq: Let's Make a Deal meeting in Egypt. It puts one in mind of an invitation to a piranha to come look over the latest shipment of scuba tourists. The interview is at the same time revealing and disheartening especially for its wishful, dare I say delusional, thinking about both the nature of our would-be interlocutors and the global situation in which we currently find ourselves. No encouraging answers to Ms. Rosett's question here. Meanwhile, moving along to Old Europe, one can sense some Continental Drift. We find that the profound and refined thinkers of the Continent have come up with a new approach in answering Ms. Rosett's question. As reported in today's <a href="http://www.washingtontimes.com/world/20070424-100747-1721r.htm" rel="nofollow">Washington Times</a>, the ever-inventive Javier Solana, the EU's foreign policy maven, plans to introduce a new continental subtlety into talks with Iran's Mr. Nuclear, Ali Larijani, about the bothersome problem of Iran's turbo-charged uranium enrichment program. Mr. Solana's solution to the current impasse is elegant in its simplicity. Since Iran refuses to stop its uranium enrichment program, Mr. Solana will simply redefine "enrichment" until he gets a crocodile smile from Mr. Larijani. The mere illusion of progress will suffice for the tired old continent to persist in its alternate reality. Redefine reality until it fits the dream of quietude, however frangible, and Old Europe will sleep on. One begins to suspect that it would not be difficult to diagnose, on the basis of such evidence, a planetary mental disorder. Nothing like a spot of worldwide psychosis to concentrate the mind of anyone still asking questions.... We castigate our leaders, and the intelligence agencies that are supposed to inform them, for not having connected the dots and prevented 9/11. We cast helplessly about for "reasons" -- dots to connect -- for what underlay the horrific events at VTU in order to prevent a repetition (a comforting fantasy, perhaps, but scarcely a realistic possibility, given the infinite ways a nut case has to produce carnage). And, in the case of Iran, we have dots a-plenty, enough to create an unbroken line. And what do we do? Indeed . . .
