Syria’s Imelda Marcos on Facebook; Check Out the Shoes
It’s not just the dissidents of the Middle East who are networking on the net. The First Lady (or, under the circumstances, the First Tyrantess) of Syria, Asma Al-Assad, appears to have posted high-fashion photos of herself on Facebook .

- It pays to be married to Syria’s dictator.
Somehow, amid the news in recent years of Syria’s clandestine North Korean-abetted nuclear reactor project; support for the terrorists of Hezbollah and Hamas; fingerprints on the murder of Lebanon’s former prime minister; corrupt dealings with Saddam Hussein followed by support for terrorist attacks inside Iraq; horrific prisons; jailing and torture of dissidents, and whatnot, I’d missed Asma’s page — complete with her designer shoes, and handbags and fancy clothes and jewelry – on Facebook.
But the Reform Party of Syria (or RPS), a U.S.-based private group whose members would like to see democratic rule in Syria, has just called attention to it, in an item headlined: “Marie-Antoinette Al-Assad.” RPS reports that “The issue was brought to our attention by angry Syrians inside Syria. People who work with poor families. Such as mothers who cannot afford to buy milk for their children and fathers who cannot find work and go hungry 24/7.”
RPS continues: “Syrians are poor and hungry, asphyxiated by lack of liberties and stifling oppression. While their miserable lives carry them on a day-by-day basis, whether it comes to food or a roof over their heads, our own Marie-Antoinette is having none of that.”
I went looking for some more background on Asma Al-Assad, born and educated in London, with a career in merchant banking before she married Bashar Al-Assad in 2000 — the year he took over from his father, longtime and brutal dictator of Syria, Hafez Al-Assad. Having in short order googled my way to a piece on the Huffington Post, I found I’ve come late to the party. Earlier this month, Asma Al-Assad told Britain’s Sky News that she would like to welcome the Obamas to Damascus. Excited about the idea, Huffington recently featured a spread of “our favorite Asma looks,” enthusing about ”her love for Christian Louboutin platforms, sunglasses, and her signature wavy hair.” (Note to Michelle Obama: Whatever the fashion thrills this might portend, don’t do it!).
All told, Asma Al-Assad has better taste than Imelda Marcos in shoes, but much worse taste in regimes to go with them. As tyrants go, Bashar leaves the Philippines’ late Ferdinand in the dust (that’s safe to say, even with no love lost for Marcos). You can find more of Asma’s fashion looks here (with Bashar in Paris) and a gardening episode here. You can read about Syria’s “ties to the world’s most notorious terrorists” and strengthening ties with “fellow state sponsor of terrorism, Iran,” in this 2008 State Department report on State Sponsors of Terrorism. You can read more about Syria as one of the world’s most repressive regimes here and here.

It might very well come to pass that Asma will be pining for the good old days(back in London) if hubby dear is stupid enough to push the envelope.
It is quite possible that either angry mobs will tear this duo to pieces-many a dictator has been pushed off his throne-or Israeli intelligence will get to hubby first.
Don’t be fooled into believing the reports about ‘peace’ talks between Israel and Syria, and that they will yield ‘results’. How do I know this? Because our national consensus says so.
Simply put, the Syrian tyrant wants our Golan Heights and Israelis won’t give it up. While our leaders have a history of making poor strategic moves they are also very calculating when it comes to their political seats . IF they sense that a majority of the Jews will turn against them by daring to offer up the Golan, one can safely bet that they would rather see a war with Syria(as the dictator threatens) than be ousted from power.
Therefore,if the Syrians were to be stupid enough to go against the battle hardened IDF, and most especially the fearsome IAF, hubby will have alot more to worry about than Asma’s shopping sprees.
Think of all those Iranian ‘accidents’(planeload of top Revolutionary Guards, plus nuclear scientists as an example) over the past few years, they should serve as a warning to hubby.
‘born and educated in London’…
Wow, another complete moral and ethical sell-out. What a disgrace.
At first I was really excited about there being a Michelle soul mate living it up in Damascus. But those skinny (uncovered) arms. Give me a break. Like Michelle, Asma must learn to carry her own shopping bags. Once she has some abs, she might be worthy to break pita bread with the First Diva.
Thanks to you, Claudia, I now have a Facebook account. I was so excited to see Asma’s honey weave and her flair for accessorizing a simple black-and-white dress! No doubt this lovely lady employs a full-time photographer to obtain such a gallery of looks and details, always shown in such charming faux candor. And a get-together with the Obamas, how yummy! It would be an inspiration to the world to see the two slender and educated leaders, Bashar and Obama, with their tasteful wives. Asma truly deserves a chance to shine alongside Michelle. Those creatures all shot up at Hama are definitely the Syria of yesteryear!
It’s only a dream of course, but I hope to become friends, or best friends, or whatever it is that you can become on Facebook with fellow fashionistas. Although I have a terrific wardrobe and a nice shape, I’m aware that I’ll have to ascend to a certain prominence before I can mingle with the likes of Michelle and Asma, so I’ve declared the Grand Empire of Miss Orange and Cat in my two-bedroom condo. Pix to come!
Maybe she’ll be beheaded/stoned to death for being so western…gotta be careful People will watch her.
Go “Miss Orange”. I have had my own empire going for many years, but have closed the gate to outsiders..sorry everybody wants in these days. To be Queen is good..I should know.%:)
Sounds strangely similar to what I wrote about Asma Assad over two years ago:

Great minds think a like . . . with a two year lag

Well… born, anyway.
This is how she actually describes herself on the facebook link:
“Asma Al Assad: Syria’s First Lady And All-Natural Beauty”
How extraordinary – she has been the pampered, feared, deferred-to wife of Baby Assad for so long now that she can publish that description of herself without irony and without blushing!
“Asma Al Assad: Syria’s First Lady And All-Natural Beauty”
– And wife of Boy Assad, torturer, murderer and all-round olympic-grade grub.
Would someone care to become her facebook friend and then post some words of encouragement on her wall?
Asma’s husband can afford a chin implant, so why doesn’t he get one?
Claudia, don’t worry. Debbie has a thing about accusing everyone but the kitchen sink of copying her work. It’s actually mildly entertaining.
I completely disagree on the comparison with Marie-Antoinette:
France under Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette was most certainly NOT Syria under Assad, even if the French revolted. Just the simple fact THAT they were able to revolt, overthrow, and execute the king is proof of that. France even under the rule of it’s Kings/dictators was an “illuminated” country with a functioning economy, a thriving artistic life etc. Just look at what these kings have left us.
So sorry, but Imelda Marcos, or Eva Braun yes, but leave Marie-Antoinette be!
sounds like Asma and Michelle will be good friends – though maybe there would be too much competition between the two for who has the best purse and shoes.
Peace talks between syria and Israel?Forget it.For what?So syrian artillery can start shelling Israel’s northern border again?Did Obama forget that both countries are still in a state of war?Where is he getting his intel? The CIA,which has admitted to lying to Americans?Or is that a lie also?
No, Israel is doing the right thing by sticking to her guns on the Golan and the settlement issue. We will not appease dictators and tyrants.
We will not appease dictators and tyrants.
