So, in this campaign of many shockers, we now have the New York Times headline: “$150,000 wardrobe for Palin May Alter Tailor-Made Image.”
I guess that if reporters wish to pursue this rich vein of inquiry, there’s a whole series of investigative stories waiting to be written on the sartorial side of politics. It’s certainly more entertaining than digging into curious real estate deals, unreleased school transcripts, radical associates and millions dispensed in troubling ways (see this latest from my colleague, Andy McCarthy, on Obama’s “Social Justice” education expert).
In this new sartorial seam of campaign coverage, we might hope to read the full accounts of how much precisely has been spent, and by whom, on pantsuits, silk scarves, jewelry, men’s suits, socks and shoes; those shirts that seem to arrive with the sleeves pre-rolled-up; and, of course, the facelifts, hair treatments, and above all (or maybe beneath some) the Botox.
On the historical side, there’s the calculation (inflation-adjusted, please) of how much Jackie Kennedy spent on her widely admired wardrobe, first on the campaign trail and then in the White House. Or, how about some answers to a question that’s been bothering me for years — When Jimmy Carter arrived for his Washington inaugural pointedly carrying his own garment bag, was there actually anything inside it? And then there’s the multilateral theme — While Kofi Annan was lecturing the world about poverty, how much was he spending on those Brioni suits?
The angles are endless. It’s quite possible that here and there some of these stories have already appeared, though probably under headlines less portentous.
But here’s the real point. In an excellent article about the cheap shots at Sarah Palin, Dan Henninger of The Wall Street Journal notes:
It seems only yesterday that the most critical skill in presidential politics was being able to connect to people in places like Bronko’s bar or Saddleback Church. When Gov. Palin showed she excelled at that, the goal posts suddenly moved and the new game was being able to talk the talk in London, Paris, Tehran or Moscow. She looks about a half-step behind Sen. Obama on that learning curve.
About those moving goal posts, one might well wonder. Had it turned out, upon urgent inspection, that the wardrobe assembled in haste for Palin’s campaign travels had been purchased entirely in bargain basement bulk sales, would the headline have been: “Cheapskate Wardrobe Tarnishes Veep Pick’s Image” — ?
We’ll never know. But given the apparent importance and urgency of the topic, I do await with impatience the editorials now screaming to be written, spelling out to the last penny exactly how much it is fitting to spend on the campaign wardrobe of the first woman candidate in history for vice-president of the United States. [Note: My apologies for the error: As readers point out below, Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman candidate for vice-president. I should have said of Palin ... "the first woman candidate for vice-president of the United States who, no matter what she wears, could not possibly get it right."]

The point of this issue is that the money spent on Palins’ wardrobe was from Party funds, so if you made a donation to teh Party, you may have just bought her a pair of shoes.
Clothing is not usually considered a campaign expense.
there is another point as to whether your average hockey mom gets to drop $50k at Sacs.
Palin harps on about understanding the average Joe, but then acts like someone from ‘celebrityland’ when she’s comped.
in summary: it’s called hypocrisy
Women get judged on their clothes and makeup and looks. They do men’s work, but are still expected to meet feminine standards. Women expect this, not men.
Hillary changed her wardrobe for the campaign, but went back to her garish colors once she’d lost. How much did she spend for her new wardrobe? Know what? No one cares. They only care about Palin’s clothes because she’s beautiful, so the McCain campaign dressed her up.
I get it. Girls and women all over see her as a model for feminism. They WILL judge her on her clothes. I bet there were a few polls done. I imagine that Cindy helped her pick out the duds, doncha know? Good on her.
Hmm, the article is wrong. Palin is NOT the first female VP candidate. Ferraro was. She’s beautiful. How much did she spend on her wardrobe? Let’s hear her opinion. I bet she sets the record straight, and the issue goes away!
Thought I’d jump on the media bandwagon w/ my two cents on the most important story of this campaign—no not Obama’s deep-seated Marxist ideological upbringing & friends of anti-American influence, nor about the specifics of Obama’s only executive experience in Acorn litigating the banks who failed to issue bad loans that was the catalyst of this whole current Fannie May mess, but the dire issue of Palin’s wardrobe: Well someone has to get out there in defense of Governor Palin, the best dose of fresh-air & common sense wisdom since Thatcher & her admonition to President Bush not to “go wobbly” w/ his foreign policy…well, that’s another story that seems to resonate today to W’s second term, as well.
Governor Palin is an asset in so many ways for the GOP ticket & it’s smart spending to highlight that asset. I’d have little problem if they spent a million dollars on her wardrobe & hair styling, given the millions of dollars the campaign saved by attracting voters who might not have voted but for Palin’s appeal…and that includes the appeal of her smart looking, pretty package. Looks matter in this media driven world…just ask Nixon, standing next to Kennedy during his debate, if looks don’t effect the votes. Besides, how much does Pelosi, Clinton & Biden pay for their Botox treatments…that’s actually more an issue of vanity than it is of professional presence.
Also, a female candidate who must meet different crowds on a daily basis, can’t get away w/ that one versatile black dress or the mere change of a tie that a man can fall-back on to limit his wardrobe. The crowds coming to Palin’s rallies already are familiar w/ her stump speech & just want to look at her &, like it or not, scrutinize her appearance & varied wardrobe. I particularly like when she wore a simple pencil thin black skirt, white button-down crisp blouse & a wide black belt w/ black high heels…class, style, simplicity & suitability all worn w/ a casual ease & confidence that doesn’t scream that she is trying too hard.
Obama’s suits cost $ 1500 each.
LINK
Good for her! Spread the wealth! Good use for GOP contributions!
Either the campaign/party provides the wardrobe or only the very rich can run… is that what we want?
How much has the Obamas’ wardrobe cost? Who paid? Why haven’t we seen costs for her styling?
One has to wonder if a lot of that $150,000 is not buying three sizes of the same dress off the rack and seeing which one fits.
Media double edge sword, the wallmark V.P. isn’t getting her clothes there – the scandal of it all
I don’t see OBambi’s suit bill on the news. His dry cleaning bill alone has to be in the millions with all the spew flying from his mouth daily
Great article, but she isn’t the first woman candidate in history for VEEP. That honor goes to Geraldine Ferraro.
The point is not that the RNC bought her $150,000 in clothes and accessories; but the hypocrisy of posing as an ‘average joe’ (or the female equivalent) while accepting and wearing more money in clothes in two months than the ‘average joe’ makes in 2 years.
It wouldn’t invalidate her claim if she was only claiming to ‘represent’ the middle class, but she is claiming to ‘be’ the middle class. And that’s more worthy of mention than a connection between Obama and a man described by McCain as a washed up terrorist who didn’t matter.
Govenor Sarah Palin, Vice Presidential Csndidate for the Republican Party, has been and will continue to be attacked no matter what she does.
It is obvious her family lives within their means. With five children to feed and clothe, purchasing expensive clothes for them would be a luxary.
I am glad the Palins had this opportunity, they are on the world stage!
The funny thing is, now everyone will try to buy all these things for themselves, hoping they will look as attractive as the Palin famly.
As evidence, Sarah’s glasses.
This week both Michelle and Barack Obama are on the covers of fashion magazines at the grocery story. I wonder when are we going to hear about the cost of this bit of product placement?
As for the “Cheapskate Wardrobe” article mentioned above, the Washington Post already did that, and more than once. I recall snotty articles about her red, open-toed shoes, her hair, and her glasses, among other things.
This is hilarious. All the Republicans who made a big deal over Edwards’ $400 haircut are getting paid back 375 times. Now you look like hypocrites–which is exactly what you are.
I blame Cindy McCain and her love of quality duds. I suspect she’s The One who kept Sarah away from rummaging thru the Sally Anne. Worse, I imagine Sarah enjoyed this vulgar exercise in “spreading the wealth” American style.
The bias of the MSM is truly astounding.Dont they realize they are losing at least half of their audience?Do they think we will forget after the election? I believe Nobama is a phony who will do or say anything he thinks will get him votes. He uses lawyer speak to divert people from the TRUTH. It gives him legitimacy when he appears on the same stage as John McCain.Lawyers are a lower life form! McCAIN/PALIN 08!
Oprah is an Obama supporter and exposes the liberals view on wardrobes.
Oprah Winfrey’s mother, Vernita Lee, is being sued by a high-end fashion store over a past due bill of more than $150,000.
According to the civil complaint (obtained by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel), Lee, a Milwaukee resident, has had an open-ended charge account with Valentina Inc. since January 2004.
As of July 1, she has racked up a bill of $155,547.31 in purchases and interest, according to the complaint. (Lee was required to make a minimum monthly payment of $2,000 to the store, the paper reports.)
Valentina attorney Joseph Niebler, Sr., told the Sentinel that at some point Lee stopped making the monthly payments.
He added that the store had tried to resolve the bill before filing the lawsuit and continues to pursue a resolution out of court.
So 150,000 is a fair number.
Dems want us to share the wealth and stiff the merchant and republicans are expected to pay.
Sorry, but she’s not the first female VP candidate in US history. Unfortunately Geraldine Ferraro earned that title 24 years ago.
Um, the first women candidate in HISTORY for vice president was Geraldine Ferraro, not Sarah Palin. Gee, you guys really don’t check anything before you type, do you?
I think its important to realize the fact that she needed a new wardrobe.
In other words, she didn’t have these kinds of clothes before. She had the wardrobe of a hockey mom and governor from Alaska where informality and practicality seems to be clearly the norm.
It is expected of people seeking high office or any high powered job to dress the part. In the lower 48 that is the standard CEO type wardrobe both stylish, business like and feminine.
We expect people to dress like they really want the job in these cases. How many folks would even get a regular job without a nice interview outfit.
Sarah is being interviewed by the American people for the job of VP. Most of those who have been courting the nation for years have already assembled their professional wardrobe over time.
Sarah had to assemble a professional CEO type look according to the standards of the lower 48 in rapid fashion.
You are totally right. Lets add up over time how much both Obamas and Biden have spent of their wardrobes and appearance. I imagine it would be as much if not more than was just spent on Sarah.
BTW, to those who ask why didn’t she use her own money like Hillary and Ferraro et al.
Its because she doesnt have it. She doesn’t have it because she is truly middle class!
Much ado over nothing. The left so hates this fine woman that they will say and write anything to besmirch her. And these are supposedly the “compassionate” ones. Nothing more than a despicable scrum of hyena
I don’t think $150,000 is all that much to provide her with a wardrobe suitable for the lower 48 in warmer months.
From the time she was chosen, she would have had little time to put together a campaign wardrobe.
Personally, I don’t think it is negative–it only shows that the Palins do not HAVE $150,000 available to spend on a wardrobe.
$600,000,000 can buy a lot of suits. Those Jacqueline Kennedy copies Michael Obama wears cost a pretty penny I bet. Of course the Obamabots will say it came out of the messiah’s pocket. Yea, right.
Catholic Bishop Against Obama Obama sicks the IRS on HIM
WASHINGTON — A church-state watchdog group has asked the Internal Revenue Service to investigate whether the Roman Catholic bishop of Paterson, N.J., violated tax laws by denouncing Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.
In a letter sent to the IRS on Wednesday (Oct. 22), Americans United for Separation of Church and State accused Paterson Bishop Arthur Serratelli of illegal partisanship for lambasting Obama’s support of abortion rights.
In a column posted on the Diocese of Paterson’s website and published in its weekly newspaper, Serratelli also compared Obama to King Herod, the biblical monarch who ordered the death of John the Baptist.
The bishop did not refer to Obama by name but only as “the present democratic (sic) candidate.”
Under federal tax law, nonprofit groups — including religious organizations — are prohibited from intervening in campaigns for public office by endorsing or opposing candidates.

Serratelli wrote that Obama has pledged, if elected president, to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, abortion-rights legislation the Catholic Church vehemently opposes.
“If this politician fulfills his promise, not only will many of our freedoms as Americans be taken from us, but the innocent and vulnerable will spill their blood,” Serratelli wrote.
The Rev. Barry Lynn, president of Americans United, said it is “impossible to interpret this passage as anything but a command to vote against ‘the present Democratic candidate’ because of his promise to sign a certain piece of legislation disfavored by the Catholic Church’s hierarchy.”
The Paterson diocese said Serratelli’s column was focused on proposed abortion legislation, not the upcoming presidential election.
First woman candidate was Shirley Chisolm. Too bad history isn’t taught anymore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Chisholm
So the RNC spent $150,000 on Palin’s wardrobe. And the Obama campaign gave $800,000 to ACORN, under investigation in at least ten states for voter registration fraud.
The fact that the former and not the latter is the hot story of the day tells you all you need to know about the shallowness and bias of the tanning-bed media.
Hmmmm, when Nancy Pelosi took over as Speaker, didn’t she make a remark that from now on, women in Congress would be expected to dress in a more fashionable professional style as opposed to the frumpy office togs they had been accustomed to wearing? Seems, then, it would follow that a VP candidate should be held to at least the same standards. Good thing Gov. Palin isn’t grossly overweight; they’d be saying she’s at risk for heart disease and should withdraw!
I love watching all of the people who blasted Edwards for his $400 haircut defend Palin’s $140,000+ wardrobe*. So many in the right wing blogs delighted in calling Edwards a hypocrite for getting an expensive haircut while campaigning as the son of a textile worker and now those same people are defending Palin’s extravagant wardrobe while she campaigns as a middle class hockey mom. The hypocrisy is amazing.
* apparently about $5K went to clothes for hubby and baby.
The one she wore to the last debate cost ~ $150.
The Hockey mom in her Neiman Marcus suits doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the fact that after three tries, she STILL can’t answer the question “what does the vice-president do” correctly. She’s a total embarrassment.
Eudocia, I think you’re the one who needs to study. Please do your homework before wasting our time. While you’re at it take Biden with you because he was the one that got it wrong.
You know what – let’s also not forget that Gov. Palin hasn’t been pulling down the $7 million a year the Obama’s have in the past couple of years. She’s got five kids and she and her husband are working stiffs like you and me. So the campaign spent some money on giving her an executive wardrobe she never assembled prior to becoming the VP running mate – so what! They didn’t go spend unseemly amounts on a world tour or blow through incredible sums of money so fast they had to hold a fund raiser.
This glass ceiling thing isn’t funny. Sarah Palin has stood up under the most intense scrutiny that Obama’s media pals could work. I’d like to know how much money the media spent in Alaska over those weeks that they tried digging up dirt on her and couldn’t. Why don’t they spend the same amount of time, money and energy digging up dirt on all the candidates evenly?
Yeah, right.
“The one she wore to the last debate cost ~ $150″
For $250 more she can get a John Edwards haircut and yes we all know about the $150 dress. I guess that’s the only dress she owns.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this story on TV yesterday was the story from a few years ago in the WaPo criticizing Cheney for what wore to a ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of Auschwitz:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A43247-2005Jan27.html
Obviously, at least some in the press focus on what the candidates wear, and spending some money on making them look good seems like a worthy expense.
The only thing that bothers the NYT or the democrats is the fact that the woman looks good in just about anything.
I’m sick of this story.
I’m a plaintiff’s employment law attorney. This means I have to go to trial sometimes. And after I win, I interview the jurors. (This is typically done after trials by attorneys for both sides so we can learn what the jury was thinking….)
One thing all jurors say is that women, generally, dress much worse than do men. And that the jurors don’t understand why the women come in looking dowdy and in cheap clothes. Yet jurors say the men always look pulled together.
This taught me one big thing: It’s called wardrobe. And trial is theatre, and women need a good, professional, powerful wardrobe in order to have their message heard.
Sarah Palin did the right thing. The RNC did the right thing. Professional women must have wardrobe. If we don’t, we are judged negatively by those who view us. We are seen as less competent, less professional, unorganized, less believable.
So anyone who is critical of wardrobe is not getting it. It is very important for women to present themselves professionally.
And Sarah Palin is on the national stage–the world stage. And I think she and the RNC did a great job (only $150,000). Hell, I’ve spent $6,000 on wardrobe for one trial alone. And then I win.
Was it worth it? You betcha.
To all the Geraldine Ferraro fans, she WASN’T the first woman VP candidate. As one commenter noted, GF was the first MAJOR PARTY VP candidate. In fact, the FIRST woman VP candidate was Tonie Nathan, the VP candidate of the LIbertarian Party in 1972. (Unless there were also some even LESSER minor party candidates that I’m not aware of.) And, in fact, by virtue of a disgruntled Virginia Republican elector, Nathan became the first woman in American history to receive an electoral vote. So all you smug folks “correcting” Ms. Rosett can now show a little humility by acknowledging that you were also wrong.
If only Palin had pushed for her husband to be appointed “Community Outreach Director” at a local hospital for several hundred thou that could be used for patient care, she wouldn’t need the clothes.
My thanks to the New York Times, of course, for this illuminating contribution to the national good. I may not know what Obama is going to do with taxes, but this helps me a lot.
And is anyone asking how much Obama’s suits cost?
Er, no. Neither has anyone looked into Obama’s past, or lack of experience.
The One is not to be questioned.
“The one she wore to the last debate cost ~ $150″
Off the rack, off season.
Dresses cost more than that at JCPenny’s and Sears. Off season $150-250 suits at Ann Taylor Loft, if they fit.
Please welcome the frothing Hissy Matthews to the comments section.
Why should the media report on the origins of the biggest financial crisis since the recession or Obama’s illegal $800,000 gift to the ACORN he didn’t know.
I mean look at how good that woman looks. Someone stop her.
All you have to do is look at the financial records of the Palin family and you can see they are the middle class all the way. And they have the real charitable contributions to prove it.
Unlike another ticket of The People, don’t ya know.
As amusing as I find this fiasco, in a sense I give Palin a pass on this one. The McCain campaign didn’t exactly know how Palin would resonate with the voters, but they did know her looks would be a big hit. It’s not surprising that they wanted her to dress in a way that accentuated her looks, and they succeeded. She looks fantastic in just about every picture I’ve seen of her, and the clothes are a big part of this.
I think the McCain campaign gambled on whether this information would come to light before the election, and they got caught. While I don’t blame Palin personally, this puts a giant stamp of hypocrisy on the image that Palin’s handlers in the campaign have created for her. And I don’t think she has the depth or the character to say, “Wait a minute, how much did this stuff cost?”
$150K on a wardrobe? That is not a huge deal – most people are fully aware of the cost of high quality shoes, suits, etc.
glen – Good point.
What’s funny is that those signature red shoes of hers go for $89. Or rather, they used to. They’re sold out. They sold out in a hurry as women rushed to buy them. Don’t think for a second that what Palin wears doesn’t matter.
Anyway, when they give them to charity, that charity can auction them for a TON of money. Just sayin’.
How much does a well known actress typically spend on dressing up for one night to attend the Academy Awards ceremony?
Worrying about Palin’s attire is a great way to divert attention from Biden’s numerous gaffes, Obama’s intentional ties to terrorists, and other assorted lefties and his economic proposals to start “distributing our wealth.” Can’t wait for the long faces on 11/05.
Sarah Palin should not be deemed as a hypocrite because she is wearing designer clothes. She probably never dreamed of buying thousands of dollars of clothes during her lifetime, let alone in a time period of 2 and a half months. Ms. Palin never wore such designers as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Ave. on a daily basis before she was thrust into the media spotlight. As a matter of fact, she should not be criticized for being an elitist because she never even wears designer clothes, stating in a February 2008 article in Vogue magazine, “I’d say my favorite designers are Patagonia and North Face,” she [Palin] jokes.
On the other hand, the Democratic party is being cut a lot of slack. Michelle Obama was praised for wearing a $150 White House/Black Market dress, but I am pretty positive since The View is a show centered mostly towards women, the hosts probably told Obama in advance that she was to wear something she really liked being that she was going to asked a couple of question s on her wardrobe. As everyone knows that candidates and their families can be like puppets on a string, her consultants probably told her to wear an inexpensive dress in order to escape the ridicule of being arrogantly wealthy. Obama also has designer Isabel Toledo design her clothes, some of which were bought at Chicago’s trendy and upscale shopping boutique, Ikram. Designers that are featured there include Proenza Schouler, Narciso Rodriguez, and Alexander McQueen, the same designers that are sold at the stores that Palin’s clothes wer bought at, such as Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Bloomingdale’s. Jill Biden, Joe Biden’s wife, was described in this month’s Vogue issue as wearing “Around her neck is a tangle of delicate gold jewelry and tiny pearls; from one chain hangs a little horseshoe made of diamonds.” And that is what she was wearing around her house.
Obviously the media and the public needs to start researching and posting on the TWO sides of the story and not just one.
Who cares about Palin’s wardrobe, someone tell Biden that FDR wasn’t President during the great depression and there were no tv’s at that time either…oh and which ammendment is for what…
As Joe Scarborough told his horrified co-anchor on MSNBC this morning, “When people actually meet her, they’re blown away”
Obama is the most fake, phony, hypocrite candidate ever. He rides around in his jet and lives in his million dollar mansion, yet his constituents in southside of Chicago are mired in poverty, crime and illiteracy. This admitted cocaine-user represented his convicted slumlord friend, Tony Rezko, and Tony in response helped the cocaine user get the million dollar home, while Rezko’s tenants in the slums of Chicago weren’t getting any heat. And the cocaine user didn’t even think about his poor constituents freezing to death in Chicago’s brutal winters.
Obama is a total hypocrite and an elitist who forgot or doesn’t really care about his people.
Eudocia, please remind Obama that there are only 50 states in the union — not 57.
Also, remind Biden that JOBS is a 4-Letter word and that wheelchair-bound people cannot “stand up” when he orders them to.
And everytime Obama says that he’s going to cut the taxes of 95% of the people, tell him to STOP LYING because the American people are not that stupid. 40% of the people DO NOT pay taxes so his 95% LIE is not only manipulating and distorting the truth for those vulnerable followers blindly in love with this phony candidate, but it’s also an insult to everyone’s intelligence. TELL THE TRUTH, OBAMA. WE’RE SICK AND TIRED OF YOUR LYING AND HIDING ALL THE FACTS ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND, UNIVERSITY DAYS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZING DAYS, ILLINOIS SENATE DAYS AND YOUR ALLIANCES WITH THE MOST RADICAL AND CONTROVERSIAL FIGURES IN HISTORY. AND WE’RE SICK AND TIRED OF THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE NOT DONE A SINGLE THING FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY YET YOU’RE USING THEM TO WIN THIS ELECTION. SHAME ON YOU, OBAMA.
I’m not bothered in the least that the RNC bought Governor Palin a campaign wardrobe… in fact, as a woman, I’m actually delighted that I can see and enjoy exactly where zamy money is being spent, as opposed to thousands for doughnuts and pizza, or suites for party flaks. Palin looks good on the stump, and since the elite designers are not flocking to donate clothes to her, as they have to Michelle Obama, she had to have a wardrobe. Quit bellyaching…. I bet Biden’s hairplugs cost twice as much.
(Re # 36…Typo alert, where my money is being spent. Have no idea why the random za appeared)
I think I’m fairly average and I certainly don’t have the wardrobe for multiple appearances and interviews every single day for months on end. I guess the media thinks the typical woman in Alaska keeps clothing suitable for campaigning in Florida in the back of her closet, just in case. The media is merely showing how out of touch they are with this nonsense. And didn’t she say she would donate it all after the campaign? When has that been expected of anyone running for office from either party?
The RNC says it will sell Palin’s clothes after the election. I bet if Sarah put the wardrobe on EBay, they would make money on the deal.
It turns out, she didn’t buy the duds. She was given outifts and told, “Wear this.” She changes clothes all the time. I’ve seen pictures of her out on the stump three times in a day, and each time it seems she wears something different.
The designers are really missing out. They should have been having her wear their stuff. Her wearing them is worth far more in advertising than Giselle Bundchen. Palin is simply the biggest female star on the planet right now. Liberal idiots missed out.
888: Calm down. You don’t expect a politician to tell the truth unless he has to. The rant should be aimed at the MSM who are supposed to be the truth squads in elections. Alas, they are deeply submerged in the tank, presumably hoping to have an all Dem govt. to save them from talk radios and the internet. Free speech days on talk radios and the internet will be over soon. That’s far worse than him hiding his inconvenient truths.
Marc has a good idea – Palin should get famous designers to give her free clothes, which she could wear to promote the label, just like movie stars do on the Oscars red carpet in ‘celebrityland’
she could become a product placement mannequin.
on second thoughts, maybe they could just put the mannequin on stage. the mannequin would do just as good a job at avoiding questions from the press, and would probably have a better understanding of the role of VP.
it could have a little string out of the back of the head, which when pulled would play recorded catchphrases like “maverick Joe Sixpack Hockey Mom you betcha!”
I love Jennifer Rubin’s comment about Sarah’s being able to donate her clothing to charity but who wants the (much more costly) plastic altars created for the Obama Shows?
I would have donated to the Republican Party instead of to 527′s and individual candidates if I’d known they would fund Sarah Palin’s brilliant wardrobe.
Hillary Clinton is a multi-millionairess but always looked dowdy in those pantsuits. Once, she even looked like a Prison Wardress (Lotte Lenya in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE). Scary.
Sarah Palin dresses in a great new “I am a Governor (or a CEO) style. We haven’t seen that before. We’ve seen the Coco Chanel “lunch lady” outfits which I always thought were like Rolls Royce’s (the dowager’s coach). Way too old for me.
Palin’s high-collared suits present her as a person — not a woman, much like the only other woman I could have supported for President, Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick.
Palin is beautiful, approachable and friendly. She needs clothes that say “I’m an important executive” to keep idiot men at a distance, something her eyeglasses and upswept do also do subliminally.
She will need those suits as Vice-President.
And I want to know who her stylist/shopper is. Had I the money I would hire her in a New York minute. Whatever they paid her, she deserves a bonus.
Palin is wearing the first attractive clothes I’ve seen for years. Just as I’ve been boycotting Hollywood for years now, I’ve also been boycotting fashion: too ugly, too depressing.
But Governor Palin dresses not like a fashionista but like a woman of style, a woman who knows who and what she is. More Sarah, please.
The one thing I haven’t seen anyone bring up here is the incredibly snotty harping of the MSM regarding the fact that First Lady Barbara Bush had the audacity to wear clothing made by her Texas designer to President Bush’s first inauguration. They were up in arms because she was wearing something that wasn’t from a New York or Paris designer and was therefore, unfit to be first lady. If the first lady, who has NO political role in our government was attacked for her wardrobe choices not being elite enough, why does anyone think that Sarah Palin, a woman who actually WILL have a political position wouldn’t?
I disagree with those who say that the campaign paying for her clothing is hypocritical. I think it is telling that the only way Ms. Palin can have a chance of being taken seriously is if she dresses like the MSM deems appropriate. In fact, I think it says more about the difference between the ‘typical’ politicians and Ms Palin. Many people feel that politicians have no relationship to the people they claim to represent; the financial aspect is a large part of it. If you don’t have the money to project the ‘appropriate’ image of wealth & influence, you don’t have a chance.
This is especially true for women. Men may be judged on their sense of humor or quick-wittedness before their clothing but for many women, image is how the world sees you. Frumpyness or sexy apparel can get women permanently relegated to housewife or secretary status by those who don’t have the brains to look beyond the Armani and Manohlo Blahniks.
The wardrobe was a sad necessity and should reflect more on the shallowness of the MSM, DNC, and dare I say, the American public than it should on Ms. Palin’s supposed hypocrisy.
just in from Fox News
SArah’s take on this (more like $50,000)
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/24/palin-denies-accepting-designer-clothes/
Of the $150,000 spent by the Republican National Committee on clothing for the vice presidential candidate, $50,000 worth of clothes was returned immediately after the national convention, $50,000 worth hasn’t been worn yet and $50,000 is being used by the Palin clan.
Sarah Palin told FOX News on Thursday that some of the clothes that were ill-fitting or just bought to be tried and possibly worn were returned right away.
Everything that “could be returned was,” she said. Another third of the clothing remains unwrapped and packed in the belly of the vice presidential candidate’s campaign plane and the rest is being worn.
Republican aides say the purchases were necessary because the family was whisked out of Alaska without notice, then scattered across the country for campaign activities not least of which was a week of convention appearances.
“Those clothes are not my property,” Palin told FOX News’ Sean Hannity. “We had three days (at the convention) of using clothes that the RNC purchased.”
Palin added that she knows how to make a dollar work for her appearance.
“If people knew how Todd and I and our kids shop so frugally. My favorite shop is a consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska, called ‘Out of the Closet,’ and my shoe store is called ‘Shoe Fly’ in Juneau, Alaska. It is … not 5th Avenue type of shopping,” Palin said, adding that the RNC purchases will either be returned or go to charity.
RNC officials would not explain why this explanation is surfacing days after the purchase appeared in news stories, advisers declined to answer. They did describe much of what Palin wears now as bought “off the sale rack from Macy’s.”
News of the purchases of designer clothes, largely from upscale Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, contrasts with the image Palin has crafted as a typical “hockey mom.”
McCain was asked several questions on Thursday about the shopping spree — and he answered each one more or less the same way: Palin needed clothes and they’ll be donated to charity.

I’m sure the media won’t bother with the correction. In the mean time, Obama spent $5 million extra for his convention speech by building the presidential greek palace when the stage at the Pepsi Center was fine. Now he’s spending $500,000 to fly to Hawaaii with the press for a photo op with his grandma, when on vacation his family never even visited with her.
After the election when Sarah auctions her wardrobe for $1 million at a charity, will the media report that?
Didn’t Gore pay that meshuga Naomi Wolf $180k to advise him on his wardrobe?$180k for her to advise, “earth tones, Al.”
I wonder whether those criticizing Sarah Palin for her so-called extravagence are walking the floor at night over Michelle Obama’s lobster, Iranian caviar and French champagne repast at the Waldorf-Astoria last week. Mrs. B-Ho did not pay for that sumptuous meal any more than Sarah Palin paid for her attire, but I haven’t heard any Democratic partisans demand that henceforth Michelle should eat at McDonald’s!
Know what’s funny? The Dems always say they want to talk about “the issues”… then they trot out this nonsense. Bring back Jeremiah Wright as an issue!
I agree- it is a double standard is it not? Here is a link to Ms. Palin wearing fair trade jewelry on iVillage (that did not cost her $150,000).
http://beauty.ivillage.com/slideshow/beauty_style/steep_vs_cheap_sarah_palin/brace_yourself/
Since the NY Times deems newsworthy the amount Palin spends on her wardrobe, I’d like to know how much McCain, Obama, and Biden spend on theirs. As well as all other frivolous expenditures by all parties. Lets not pick on the lone woman, and lets not exclude the 3 men. Will the Times and other news sources stick to reporting newsworthy issues and let the tabloids handle the ridiculous.
I’m voting Obama for reasons that deal strictly with a single issue that is important to me. However, the media is so busy tearing down Palin/McCain ticket it appears to be, thinking it uncomprehensible that folks would support her as a VP, when I find it uncomprehensible that the media bias to her and the republican ticket is the worst I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.
Lets put the focus where it really belongs, in Washington, where all elected members, Democrat and Republican alike, are spending, abusing, and wasting our money with reckless abandon. Lets quit the partisan politics and channel our outrage at our Government gone corrupt. Checks and balances no longer exist. The media should focus on the agenda of cleaning up Washington. Not sweeping out the Republicans. As we will all see with President Obama, it will still be business as usual, but with a spokesperson more popular than George Bush!
To all of you who bash Sarah Palin about her $150K wardrobe , I say get a life. The woman had neither the time or money to get a proper wardrobe. The media continuously bash her because they are so afraid of her. If they would take the time to see everything she had done in Alaska instead of of bashing her every chance they get. By the way she has more experience than Obama.
Never mind that Sarah Palin hockey mom is much more comfortable in Goodwill type clothes and only consented to wear them because the RNC insisted and said that after she had worn them to the event as required by protocol that they would either be returned or auctioned off for charity. She did not want them and they were not hers.
And what about Michelle Obama’s $400.00 plus snack of lobster at a hotel just this last week? That can’t be returned for charity.
I think we need to hear and LISTEN to the whole story.
AmyD – Great link. She not only buys the jewelry to support third-world entrepreneurship; she actually wears it! It speaks volumes.
the answer to all this….roman togas for all!
Or, maybe limit everyone to drab tunics, ala’ communist Mao’s fashion era.
Ridiculous.
He’s a secular humanist. Jesus is a dead historical figure to him. Jesus is NOT Risen, is NOT the Truth, or the Way.
Barack Hussein Obama is proud of his skepticism of organized religion. When he DID commit to a church, it was a 20 year affiliation with the former muslim’s Jeremiah Wright’s black nationalist “church”.
Obama’s election website denies he ever was a muslim. Obama’s own book and interviews include accounts of him studying the koran in religion class as a child and that he can still flawlessly recite the Islamic call to prayer in arabic.
Is he still a muslim? That is a different question than was he EVER a muslim, which his handlers insist was “no”.
As to his “being a Christian”, he is a secular humanist. He sees Jesus as a dead historical figure, not a living savior.
2004 Interview: Obama Talks about Jesus, Heaven and Sin June 3, 2008
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2111204/posts?
“OBAMA: Right. Jesus is a historical figure for me, and he’s also a bridge between God and man, in the Christian faith, and one that I think is powerful precisely because he serves as that means of us reaching something higher. And he’s also a wonderful teacher. I think it’s important for all of us, of whatever faith, to have teachers in the flesh and also teachers in history.”
Obama: “There’s the belief, certainly in some quarters, that people haven’t embraced Jesus Christ as their personal savior that they’re going to hell.” GG: You don’t believe that?
OBAMA: I find it hard to believe that my God would consign four-fifths of the world to hell. I can’t imagine that my God would allow some little Hindu kid in India who never interacts with the Christian faith to somehow burn for all eternity. That’s just not part of my religious makeup.
GG: What is sin?
OBAMA: Being out of alignment with my values.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Dunham#Religion Religion
A “friend” from high school has said that Dunham “touted herself as an atheist, and it was something she’d read about and could argue.”[6] Maya Soetoro-Ng, when asked if her mother was an atheist, said, “I wouldn’t have called her an atheist. She was an agnostic. She basically gave us all the good books — the Bible, the Hindu Upanishads and the Buddhist scripture, the Tao Te Ching — and wanted us to recognise that everyone has something beautiful to contribute.”[19] “Jesus, she felt, was a wonderful example. But she felt that a lot of Christians behaved in un-Christian ways.”[20]
In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father Barack Obama wrote, “My mother’s confidence in needlepoint virtues depended on a faith I didn’t possess… In a land [Indonesia] where fatalism remained a necessary tool for enduring hardship… she was a lonely witness for secular humanism, a soldier for New Deal, Peace Corps, position-paper liberalism.”[21] In his 2006 book The Audacity of Hope Obama wrote, “I was not raised in a religious household… My mother’s own experiences… only reinforced this inherited skepticism. Her memories of the Christians who populated her youth were not fond ones… And yet for all her professed secularism, my mother was in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I’ve ever known.”[22] Religion for her was “just one of the many ways — and not necessarily the best way — that man attempted to control the unknowable and understand the deeper truths about our lives,” Obama wrote.[20] In 2007 Obama described his mother as “a Christian from Kansas.” “I was raised by my mother,” he continued. “So, I’ve always been a Christian.”[23][24] Also in 2007, he said in a speech, “My mother, whose parents were nonpracticing Baptists and Methodists, was one of the most spiritual souls I ever knew. But she had a healthy skepticism of religion as an institution.”[1]
The first mention I find of religion in this lengthy Time Magazine article is on page 4 http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1729524-4,00.html
“Ann took a job teaching English at the U.S. embassy. She woke up well before dawn throughout her life. Now she went into her son’s room every day at 4 a.m. to give him English lessons from a U.S. correspondence course. She couldn’t afford the élite international school and worried he wasn’t challenged enough. After two years at the Catholic school, Obama moved to a state-run elementary school closer to the new house. He was the only foreigner, says Ati Kisjanto, a classmate, but he spoke some Indonesian and made new friends.”
So he went to a Catholic school briefly because she thought it might be a better school.
On page 5 of the article, there is this:
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1729524-5,00.html
“Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population, but Obama’s household was not religious. ‘My mother, whose parents were nonpracticing Baptists and Methodists, was one of the most spiritual souls I ever knew,’ Obama said in a 2007 speech. ‘But she had a healthy skepticism of religion as an institution. And as a consequence, so did I.’”
What is a “healthy skepticism of religion as an institution” for a devout Christian?

Only 54% of Republicans and 25% of Democrats know that Obama is a muslim?

he is “surprised that so many people don’t know Obama is not a Muslim.”
That’s because nobody knows that he is not a Muslim. When did he convert? Where was he baptized?
Belonging to that whacked-out Jeremiah Wright hate-group doesn’t make him a Christian any more than belonging to the Westboro Baptist “Church” does.
We don’t even know if he is a US citizen.

The first amendment is only for the elite left wing liberals. They can lie distort say anything. When the normal people speak it is a hate crime or racist. If they cannot dispute you they call you KKK or nazi.
This is why the left wing media is shrinking and losing money to the point of disappearing. The normal people are voting with their dollars. Obama is so dirty but his $250 million dollars or more from Saudi and Iran to his campaign spreads dollars to advertise at the left wing media. This $250 MILLION DOLLARS FROM SAUDI AND IRAN IS COMING FROM THE SAME PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT 9-11. THE SAME PEOPLE THAT OUR TROOPS ARE FIGHTING DIEING AND BLEEDING TO PROTECT THIS COUNTRY.
THIS IS TREASON! WHAT ARE THEY SAUDI AND IRANIANS BUYING FROM OBAMA? WAKE UP THIS A WAR. HE IS SELLING OUTOUR COUNTRY.

Obama ‘Morally Justified’ for Votes Against Helping Aborted Babies Born Aliv
e, Say Dems

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was morally justified to oppose legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would have ensured that a child who survives a failed abortion received medical attention, according to Democratic leaders.
While in the Illinois Senate, Obama opposed three bills that proposed protection in three different legislative votes, a decision that Republican presidential candidate John McCain said was wrong in the last presidential debate.
After the debate, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said that Obama did the right thing and defended his position.
Watch the Video.
“If you looked at those little meters, McCain lost that debate,” Schumer told CNSNews.com. “Most Americans are pro-choice. Most Americans don’t want to repeal Roe v. Wade, and I thought Obama was great there. He had his views but he was very respectful of the other side. Sometimes the left is a little too condescending to the other side.”
Earlier this month, CNSNews.com Editor-in-Chief Terry Jeffrey reported that, in 2001, Illinois State Senator Patrick O’Malley introduced three bills to the legislature. One said that if a doctor performing an abortion believed there was a likelihood the baby would survive, another physician must be present “to assess the child’s viability and provide medical care.”
Another bill gave the parents, or a state-appointed guardian, the right to sue to protect the child’s rights. A third bill said that a baby alive after “complete expulsion or extraction from its mother” would be considered a “person, ‘human being,’ ‘child’ and ‘individual.’”
Obama voted against all three.
During the last presidential debate, Obama responded to McCain’s allegation that his votes aligned him with the most “extreme aspect of the pro-abortion movement in America.”
OBAMA IS A MONSTER FOR VOTING TO MANDATE THE MURDER OF LITTLE INFANTS, BORN ALIVE, HAVING SURVIVED AN ABORTION ATTEMPT!
NO ONE WHO VOTES LIKE THIS CAN POSSIBLY RESPECT THE LIFE OF OTHERS. EVER.

“I think Senator Obama made it very clear where he stands on the issue of abortion,” said Dean. “This is a personal decision that the government does not have the right to make but,
If an alive baby outside the womb is still a “personal decision”, then that should give me the right to eliminate anyone I so personally chose at any stage of life, since they have become an inconvenience?

It’s not that Palin has spent $150,000 on clothing so she can identify with the ‘joe six-pack’ living in small cities who will never earn $150,000 in any single year of his lifetime…It’s not that the money she spends was not her own but GOP donations…It’s not her lack of knowledge that even a public school student would know the Vice-President’s job responsibilities…It’s that so many Americans would want someone of such limited abilities is frightening. As her own, Anchorage Daily News newspaper wrote, “few who have worked closely with the governor would argue she is truly ready to assume command of the most important, powerful national on earth.” This is a candidate who sadly, should never have been selected.
I wish the people who like to insult or degrade Sarah Palin would actually get the facts first before they start spewing their hate. SHE DIDN’T BUY THE CLOTHES HERSELF! SHE DIDN’T GO ON A SHOPPING SPREE! Some RNC employees went out and purchased things for her to wear: clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. She only gets to wear the clothes for a few days and then they will go to charity, or possibly to auction and the proceeds to charity.
Oh, and Edward, what makes you think Obama is even remotely ready? The fact that he can read a teleprompter with the right amount of authority?
To Edward A. and the rest of the morons who keep suggesting that it is Palin who doesn’t know what a VP does. Do some research and you’ll discover it was the gaffe-machine Slow-Joe Say it Ain’t So Biden who completely screwed up what a VP is supposed to do and where in your constitution it discusses the matter. Stop revealing your own stupidity and get your own facts straight. There is legitimate debate on the role of the VP and how it has apparently changed in historical terms, but to suggest that Sarah Palin is the dummy on this issue is just plain wrong.
We can’t talk about Obama’s terrorist ties, his relationship with Bill Ayers, his socialist agenda or the 5 million spent on his Greek temple—but we can natter on endlessly about Sarah Palin’s wardrobe.
Lovely.
As a donor, I pay for marketing materials, speechwriters, travel, PR – all designed to make the candidates look good. Why not pay for clothes, haircuts, and makeup? ANYTHING TO HELP THEM WIN. This would not have been a story if it were revealed that the DNC paid for Obama’s shirts. Billary had no money – did the DNC help them out with similar purchases back in 1991-92? Maybe…
The tab on Obama’s personal trip to see his ailing grandma last week in Hawaii was $800,000 just for the round trip rate on the DNC’s private jet. At least Palin’s clothes are reedemable at auction…Obama’s expense is just wasteful.
Obama is a danger. I worked for the FBI anti terror unit for 25 years. All of Obama’s associates were under our watch. They are attached to world wide terror groups. Obama is a extreme left wing anti american constitution, He is far worse than Castro or Chavez. He received over $$$250 million fraud campaign donations from Iran and Saudi. Wake up america. If he is elected their would have to be a milatary coup to remove him. After 25 years as a counter terror expert I must warn America Obama is a enemy of your freedom and safety.
Obama, the Manchurian candidate
In the classic 1962 movie thriller “The Manchurian Candidate,” a man was programmed by communist handlers, and then emerged into the public arena as a hero, with a largely manufactured history, large parts of which were either obscured or changed. Then he was planted into a position of great influence, having been programmed to usher in tremendous change at the appointed time.
Barack Obama was programmed for years by his atheist, Muslim father, by the communist sex pervert Frank Marshall Davis, by con man Tony Rezko, by domestic terrorist Bill Ayers and others – most of all by black liberation theology screamer Jeremiah Wright. Obama’s resume is largely manufactured. There is a total blackout on his college years. His campaign obscures what he did as a “community organizer.” All his radical associations are denied or minimized. His miserable legislative record (voting “present” over 100 times to avoid taking a stand), his lack of achievement, his radical views and so on – all have been laundered through the magic of public relations into the near-sacred saga of “The One” who has been sent to serve, and to save, America.
Yet, as I have documented previously, John McCain rendered more genuine service to his country each and every day of those five-and-a-half years he endured in a North Vietnamese prison than Barack Obama has in his entire life.
In “The Manchurian Candidate,” several war heroes came back to America from abroad. But one of them harbored a dark agenda, lying in wait, secretly, until it could emerge and transform America.
America has a choice Tuesday between a genuine war hero and a genuine Manchurian candidate.
Choose well.
Bishop Gracida boldly states:
“This is Bishop Rene H. Gracida, reminding all Catholics that they must vote in this election with an informed conscience. A Catholic cannot be said to have voted in this election with a good conscience if they have voted for a pro-abortion candidate. Barack Hussein Obama is a pro-abortion candidate.”
The commercial can be heard in English and Spanish at http://www.randallterry.com.
Bishop Gracida has offered this radio spot without charge for all who want to use it. All faithful Catholics are invited to download the mp3 file, and place this ad on their local radio station(s).
They must simply contact their local radio station(s), and pay for the ad as an “independent expenditure.” The station can download the audio file to play on the radio. The mp3 file is also available at http://www.randallterry.com.
Moreover, permission is granted for the ad to be downloaded, sent as a file, or posted on any web site in America.
If this ad receives the airplay it deserves, it could sink Obama’s campaign by jolting Catholic voters back to their senses and moorings. Over 50% of Catholic voters have been seduced into ethical quicksand by errant Catholics who are partisan supporters of Obama and have betrayed the lives of innocent unborn children.
The first amendment is only for the elite left wing liberals. They can lie distort say anything. When the normal people speak it is a hate crime or racist. If they cannot dispute you they call you KKK or nazi.

This was a message from a highly decorated and one of the most respected intelligence agents in the world. His last warning words to his beloved country before he died last month.
Remember what I said. It is true and part of a misinformation plan is to make the truth look paranoid. Just look around and see the media and DNC parroting the party line. The Christian Religion is evil. Homosexual is normal. Patriotism evil. Rebellion and changing the Constitution normal. Disarm the citizens normal. NRA and hunters evil. The Military and heroes evil. Anti military and ridicule heroes normal. Success and hard work evil. The government owes me normal. Shocking this is right out of the handbook of communist and Islamic terrorism guides to revolution and over throwing a country. Schools teach the government is evil and socialism utopia normal. Divide the races through agitators and media. Destroy marriage and the families. The state is the parent. Call evil good and smear and destroy good. Look at the Hollywood crowd. McCarthy was right and history has proven it. They flock around dictators and tyrants Chavez, Castro, Iranian, and Syrians. Wake up and vote for McCain if you want freedom. After 40 years of Intelligence service I can just say look and watch. Look at Obama’s friend’s Islamic Marxists terror operatives. Rev. Wright Marxist preacher of Racist Hate and division. William Ayers Marxist radical terrorist. Farrakhan Muslim Marxist. Research the hidden years at Columbia University. Also the overseas trips. Victor Marchenco, Mohamud Kioj, Sayad Kael, Fhaad Hussan these are a few of the Islamic and KGB friends who financed and open doors here through contacts. I am not long for this earth. A Terminal Sickness has attached to me. I want to warn my beloved country.
