So, there you are, just trying to live your life and find ways to hang onto whatever you’ve earned, before ObamaCare, inflation, and confiscatory tax hikes really kick in. But at least you don’t have to worry about intrusions into your daily doings and your wallet by such alien and lumbering behemoths as the United Nations … right?
Think again. In just over a week, the UN headquarters in New York will open the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, a body rife with groups devoted to finding ever more ways to help Washington regulate your life and spend your tax dollars — from carbon controls to free-speech gags to a relentlessly resurfacing series of proposals for direct UN taxes on everything from bank transactions to the Internet to air travel. On Sept. 23rd, the General Debate will begin, expected to tie up Manhattan traffic with the usual parade of eminences, including such celebrity tyrants as Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (who will be making his sixth consecutive appearance at the General Assembly annual opening).
Amid all this, there’s one item that looked — briefly – like a glimmer of good news. After a year in which Libya’s man, Ali Treki, has presided over the General Assembly, the new GA president, taking over this month, comes from Switzerland — Joseph Deiss. Sounds like an improvement, right?
Brace yourself. Deiss has already been busy consulting with UN member states about what he calls “issues of global concern,” and in a letter sent Aug. 13 to all permanent representatives and observers, he distills the results of his labors into a proposed theme for this month’s General Assembly debate:
“Reaffirming the central role of the United Nations in global governance.”
That’s quite an ambition for an organization that habitually puts the likes of Iran, Sudan, and Libya on its major committees and governing boards, while featuring an array of the world’s top tyrants on its main stage. I can see, however, why the Swiss might favor the idea. Some of the UN’s more flagrant adventures in governance, such as the Iraq Oil-for-Food program, funneled a remarkable amount of business through the Swiss corporate registries and banking system. But for most ordinary folks, not only in America, but from Asia to Africa to Latin America, “governance” UN-style — in all its murky, unaccountable immunity and impunity – is about the last thing anyone needs.
Surely the U.S. government will protect its citizens from the power-hungry, money-loving UN? Don’t bet on it. The Obama administration, via Hillary Clinton’s State Department, just last month sent in an American self-critique to the UN’s morally addled, despot-infested Human Rights Council, inviting UN member states to weigh in on such domestic matters as Arizona’s new immigration law, and presenting as American domestic “human rights” achievements a great welter of federal spending and regulatory programs, including ObamaCare. More on this in my recent column on the phenomenon that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has correctly labeled “Internationalism Run Amok.“
Is there any upside to this? Cold comfort, I guess, but if you like reading about UN scandals, there are the makings here of an endless supply of ever more financially extravagant and morally bankrupt fiascoes. Though I’d guess that most Americans, if they’d take a moment to think about it, could easily come up with cheaper and more decent forms of entertainment.

The Swiss stance of backing the UN-pimped tyrants has a lot to do with the views of their foreign minister, Micheline Calmy-Rey, who has even been shown wearing a veil in the presence of Iran’s president Mahound Arabdinejad and smiling like she couldn’t be happier about their little get together, her claims of having slammed Iran’s disregard for human rights notwithstanding (I don’t see how harsh criticism can be squared with something like this, but maybe that’s just me.) She’s even nominated rabid anti-semite and Qaddafi’s best friend forever Jean Ziegler as U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food despite the fact that he is a sociologist and knows next to nothing about agriculture.
I guess that’s just more proof of what a joke the UN is, and how the need for its dismantling, or for civilized Western countries all to quit it, has never been more urgent.
By far the easiest, most efficient way of taking the hot air out of the U.N.’s balloon is for the U.S.A. to quit funding it.
This certainly is not my original idea at all, our Congress already has suspended our dues payments, or threatened to….the only reason to continue with our United Nations membership is the possibility of using our Veto, we should use it more often….however, this is a tough trade-off.
Compare the present day hypocritical United Nations with the atmosphere at the San Francisco Conference establishing the United Nations as an organization. Previously the name “United Nations” applied to the Allies fighting Japan and Germany during the Second World War…..my, oh, my….how times have changed with the ‘third world’ now habitually outvoting the very folks who provided for their survival.
The hypocrisy is breathtaking.
I can think of nothing worse than being governed by a body made up of Khadafi, Chavez and Akmydinnerjacket. The U.S. has a Supreme Court; we don’t need no stinking U.N.G.A.
I expect the U.S. to defer more to the U.N., first because of the centralizing instinct of his administration; and secondly because Obama has already realized America has failed him because it was not a big enough vessel to contain the greatness of his vision. After his first term, he will seek a grander stage where his abilities can range unconstrained by such narrow and obsolete concepts of the nation-state. In the beginning that may be secretary-general (if that doesn’t require too much work), but eventually as the historic first First Citizen of the World. All nations are the same in the eyes of The One we were waiting for.
I WANT A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IN 2012 THAT IS AGAINST THE UNITED NATIONS AND OUR INVOLVEMENT
..OR AT LEAST THE MONEY WE CONTRIBUTE..NOT THAT OUR VOICE CARRIES ANY WEIGHT.
I BET NOT ONE IN 100 PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY ARTICULATE WHAT THEY REPRESENT AND WHAT GOOD THEY HAVE DONE. PLUS, GET THE UN OFF OUR SOIL.
I see now where in the Constitution of the United states of America where it tells me that I personally must follow and abide by anything the United Nations dictates. Abolish the United Nations and get them the hell out of this country and let those that want to follow their dictates set up shop on Bimini Island
How things can change in a few short years.
It was not so long ago that the oil-for- food related scandals were exposed and the previous UN chief’s son implicated.
Some blows for transparency, accountability, and freedom were struck in those heady days, in the dying moments of freedom less than a decade ago.
Now it seems back on track towards global collectivist government.
obama and his band of criminals in the white house there is very little difference between them and the UN
Who will be at the airport in New York to arrest Ahmadinejad for threatening genocide – or is he exempt from the law? When will we in the west stand up to this guy. He is deluded into thinking he can get away with murder. We keep unfolding the red carpet for him while he spits in our face and attends gatherings of mostly civilized beings.
Lock him up and let the courts decide his fate.
Refuse to pay “our share” to the UN. Throw them out of the US. And tell them to pack sand.
When another tyrant causes trouble don’t call us. After all we no longer hold the high moral ground-it’s all relative now.
Let’s disassociate the U.S from the UN and tell them to take their building and go to Libya or Saudi Arabia (people who’s views thay represent).
The United Nations is just a self-aggrandizing forum for a group of communist inspired collectivist morons. We could save ourselves a lot of money and grief by getting out of the UN. A side bonus would be that our departure would be terminal for this so-called world governing body.
So let’s get this straight. The world is to be governed by some outfit from New York? UNlikely I’d say. This outfit should be UNdone, UNdermined, UNmasked and mailed to some UNthinkably UNpleasant location far from N. America.
From the Humanist Manifesto 2, Tenet 12
TWELFTH: We deplore the division of humankind on nationalistic grounds. We have reached a turning point in human history where the best option is to transcend the limits of national sovereignty and to move toward the building of a world community in which all sectors of the human family can participate. Thus we look to the development of a system of world law and a world order based upon transnational federal government. This would appreciate cultural pluralism and diversity. It would not exclude pride in national origins and accomplishments nor the handling of regional problems on a regional basis. Human progress, however, can no longer be achieved by focusing on one section of the world, Western or Eastern, developed or underdeveloped. For the first time in human history, no part of humankind can be isolated from any other. Each person’s future is in some way linked to all. We thus reaffirm a commitment to the building of world community, at the same time recognizing that this commits us to some hard choices.
This is where the UN gets all of this nonsense from. Beware Magog!
The U.N. is a corrupt and dysfunctional organization consisting of ‘wanna be tyrants’ from despotic repressive regimes ruled by military dictators, tribal nincompoops and uneducated thugs jealously envious of productive hard working and cooperative social structures that have worked together to build in a manor conducive to advance future generations chances at a better life.
For decades we have sent every conceivable form of aid to many of these nations only to have childish tribal and cultural differences stir up old jealousies and hatreds that have cost Peace corps workers giving aid, the recipients of the aid, the resource materials themselves and the potential for growth and advancement to be destroyed. Sure, the idea was good. But reality and potential frequently do not meet at common intersections.
Much of the hatred for America that we are told exists in the world today has been spawned and cultivated by these very cultural clashes and petty jealousies. As it is at this very moment many segments of islam want to revert back to a seventh century social structure based in tyranny alone as the social and cultural model. All cultivated from hundreds or thousands of years of existence.
Juxtaposed cultural advancements have their problems, but it is not possible to become a common people under one common rule. Islam wants to be the ONLY social and religious model. Some cultures still revere voodoo. Today, even in our ‘advanced’ society our educated ‘elite’ are intolerant of Christian beliefs. But those same people are falling all over themselves in apologetic genuflection in support of islam while denying the existence of any deity at all.
The U.N. is the worst possible alternative for individual sovereign nations governance. They can’t even agree on what to have for lunch because of those differences. If it wasn’t for their lavish accouterments and diplomatic privileges they’d be at each others throats every day.
Being an ideologue may seem a lofty, noble and even principled life but it’s YOU that have to compromise, not them. And rarely does ideology actually match reality.
It’s time for free democratic countries to leave this islamic- infiltrated farce behind. Banish it from North America & stop contributing to it. Maybe then we’ll stop smelling sulphur every time it’s name is mentioned.
If the “Truthers” are right and the US had the will and means to deliver destruction on their own soil, the US wouldn’t have demolished the WTC to make way for a triumphalist mosque; they’d have taken out the mosque that’s already there – the UN!
Oh great. Government of, by, & for, the privileged few. If corruption, incompetence, malfeasance, ineptitude, & outright lying, is supposed to be ‘good’ government, then the UN fits the bill.
To date, with recent gang rapes in Africa that went un-noticed by UN Peacekeepers (sic), & w/ the continuing unfolding of the Climate Change scam, along w/ the Oil for Food scam & a literal plethora of other scams, having the UN run global government would be an act of planetary suicide.
I remain stunned the media has failed to adequately and throughly report on all of the many & huge UN failing’s.
If the rest of the world thinks that government under the UN is a good idea,. I say more power to them. I suggest it will last but a year at the most. Once the ineptitude becomes so obvious even Sudan withdraws, many will finally realize the ‘greedy’ Americans had the right idea all along.
Think about the socialist nature of government that the UN would impose. Now, think about Hugo Chavez’ Venezuela, where Americans are told by the old establishment media life is good, there are ‘armed military guards’ located in the food stores.
“ARMED MILITARY GUARDS!!”
Now exactly why would ANY government need to do this? The answer my friend is, the corruption & failure of any & all governments run in the socialist format always leads to those few w/ power, exercising that power, brutally!
The Soviet Union. East Germany. All of the Soviet satellite states. Sudan. Nicaragua. Recently, Kenya. All patently obvious failures run by dictators, tyrants, thugs, weasels, criminals, & corrupt political systems. In each of these countries, the people do the suffering while the select few, have every advantage, including the power to do away w/ any who may even voice the slightest opposition.
NOW. all I ask any reasonable person to do is, imagine the UN with such power at hand & plenty of money to hire thugs do their bidding.
The result will be a world of chaos and anarchy, with a large side order of wars & pestilence.
It is shameful that the US still associates itself with such an organization as the UN. It accomplishes nothing but the transfer of wealth to it’s cronies. Way past time to kick it to the curb.
It is so interesting how Ms. Rosette and others on this site rail against the United Nations and are so quick to point out its ailments yet they forget that the ability for Ms. Rosette to publish her rantings and for Pajamas Media to publish it on this so called World Wide Web would have been impossible were it not for ICAAN and the normative and codified guidance from the, hold on, wait for, yes, the UN. The moral to this is that while it is so easy to hate or point negative hysteria, it is also worthwhile to shed light on some of the many positive things happening, such as the response to Haiti right now!!!
It’s only a matter of time for the one world government to kick in. This used to be a joke…but with the government “unintentionally” destroying our economy, it’s becoming a reality. Hold in and hang in…
What rubbish – the same claim as Al Gore “inventing” the internet, by the same group of people, who now want to tax the internet.
Name a real UN success? But before you cite such as Haiti ask the locals what they think of the UN – it is NOT flattering, any more than in any of the other spheres of UN “relief” work! Overpaid staff riding round in air-conditioned Landcruisers, living and eating in moored cruise ships (at inflated contract prices), while locals suffer and go without. Some UN field workers are undoubtedly good people, but even those few should ask themselves on a daily basis what good they are doing?
The U.S. has been more than generous to Arab and Muslim nations in direct foreign aid, military assistance and other ways. Egypt receives about $2 billion of American taxpayer dollars every year, yet it still votes against American interests at the U.N. 79 percent of the time. Jordan, a “moderate” Muslim nation, receives nearly $200 million annually in U.S. foreign aid, but votes against America at the U.N. 71 percent of the time. Pakistan votes 75 percent of the time against the U.S. at the U.N. while pocketing nearly $7 million annually in foreign aid (in addition to the money it gets to supposedly fight al-Qaida).
An even better example of the disconnect between American assistance and changed Muslim attitudes toward the U.S. is the Palestinian Authority. As former Israeli diplomat Yoram Ettinger writes for ynetnews.com, just since 2007, “U.S. foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority and to PA-controlled (nongovernmental organizations) reached nearly $2 billion, in addition to $3.7 billion contributed by the U.S. to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East since 1950.”
If the news has the word “United Nations” in it, it’s guaranteed, definite, surefire, cast iron, in the bag, clear cut, assured, straightforward, a sure thing, that it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
