Our ships are there because we are attempting to deal with Iran regarding Iran’s influence over oil-rich Shiite Southern Iraq, their nucular program, Hezbollah, etc… The US needed SOME show of power to remind Iran that we remain a significant military power. Unfortunately, invading Iraq has become counter-productive to our interests and now, with the death of Saddam, you will see the US slowly back away and trying to save face.
