A Monstrous Moment at the UN General Assembly
This isn’t just a low moment. It is despicable. The United Nations General Assembly has just paid tribute to the late North Korean tyrant, Kim Jong Il, with delegates standing to observe a minute of silence in his memory.
The Associated Press reports that this kind of tribute is “customary for leaders who die in office” and that North Korea’s Mission to the UN requested this tribute to Kim. There were no speeches, and the chamber was half empty.
None of that excuses the depraved act of the UN honoring a man whose rule was responsible for abominations and atrocities inflicted by Kim Jong Il and his regime during Kim’s 17 years in power, or for that matter Kim’s long prior career under his father of engineering terrorist acts such as bombings and abductions abroad. For the UN to pay any tribute to Kim Jong Il is to insult the million or more Koreans who died of famine, the hundreds of thousands consigned to Kim’s prison camps, and the many millions more leading lives of grotesque fear and deprivation — all as the cost of Kim’s rule.
Nothing in the UN rulebook requires the General Assembly to pay tribute to its array of resident monsters. The Assembly could have replied to the North Korean mission that there will be no tribute to anyone, dead or living, who contributed to North Korea’s totalitarian horrors. But this same General Assembly that annually demands billions of dollars from U.S. tax payers — and gets them from our federal government — has just paid tribute to Kim Jong Il. What more do we need to know?

For once I can agree with PJmedia. I too am somewhat upset that the otherwise magnificent UN would honor Mr. Il. I am aware that under his rule there was a lot of suffering. He could have done a better job to alleviate the suffering of the great North Korean people. I will not hide behind arguments that US economic sanctions caused the suffering (as almost all my friend argue). I’m sure the sanctions didn’t help matters, but that’s not an excuse, I think. And I know that Mr. Il did his best to usher in a truly fair society based upon egalitarian ideas, which is really very courageous. Here, I think, the outcome outweighs the intentions a bit. We have to accept this, as painful as it may be for many of us.
Only a total moronic idiot would call the UN magnificent.
The UN is a den of thieves, murderers, tyrants and corruption. It is only logical that this group of subhuman garbage would honor the mass murderer Kim Jong. This group would probably also honor Hitler and Stalin.
It is a travesty of justice, it is theft, it is criminal that the tax dollars of working american families is sent to this political brothel.
The sooner the USA leaves that organization and kicks their rotten ass off US territory, the better off all Americans will be.
>>>>>>The UN would probably honor Hitler and Stalin.
Well, they both hated Jews, so naturally the UN would have done that. In the free time it has left between condemning Israel and declaring zionism is racism.
There is something quite obscene about an institution that would give the agents of tyranny equal standing with those who champion liberty. That the U.S. would host such an institution is, itself, an embarrassment.
I LOVE the UN’s response to an atrocity, any atrocity: write a resolution. When a tyrant guns down sixty citizens, the UN writes a resolution. I’m sure those formidable UN resolutions strike fear into the hearts of tyrants everywhere.
After a day of feverishly writing resolutions, those nifty UN delegates go out and dine in the best restaurants in New York on the dime of the US taxpayer. That’s good work (if you can get it).
“And I know that Mr. Il did his best to usher in a truly fair society based upon egalitarian ideas, which is really very courageous.”
Wow! It is unbelievable and disgusting that you could call what this egomaniacal butcher did to his people “courageous”! You might want to pay closer attention because North Korea is exactly what a worldwide egalitarian utopia would look like should the likes of MR KIM, Chavez and Castro get their way. There is nothing well intentioned about the mass-starvation of your very own people. As for sanctions, there wouldn’t be any if this thug and his father before him hadn’t gone to war, threatened war, and antagonized everyone at every turn. We, the US and global community, have extended one olive branch after another, only to have him take the offerings, then repeatedly spit in our faces. And what “Lucy” took from “Charlie Brown” before predictibly yanking the football away … again, went directly toward fattening up his own bank account and feeding his ever-increasing army. Meanwhile, the people still got to starve. This latest stunt by the UN is just another great reason to end our association with that criminal enterprise.
LovelyEarth is a parodist. Though I don’t blame you for taking it seriously as it’s becoming increasingly difficult to tell a real leftist from a parody.
Well, thank you very much for clearing that up. LovelyEarth’s comments did seem particularly outrageous.
Exactly. Ever read the comments from the lefties @ Huffinton post? LovelyEarth has their rhetoric down cold.
Yep.
I went over there and noted that they are not covering the UN moment of silence. No big surprise there. They always skip the embarrasing UN stuff.
Found a couple comments on the UK site which are typical HP crapola. If you cant exactly say something nice about an evil dictator just make a false comparison:
Kim compared to British royals: “The British media have created an ‘aura’ about the british royal family in a smaller but similar way to the way the north korean media have peddled their propaganda about the Kim Jong family”
Kim was the same as Jesus: “Equally far fetched are concepts like virgin birth, wise men following a star and rising from the dead. Yet millions follow such myths.
If Kim had lived 2,000 years ago and the above report had been written down no doubt there would be people who would be venerating him today.
Likewise, if the bible stories were reported today they would be treated in much the same way as the report from North Korea.”
Kim the same as Republicans: ” oh yes, he was such a great guy walking around in his khaki jacket – no! not for comfort or convenience, but for the people! So wonderful to care more about having the 5th largest military rather than feeding his people. Republicans also care more about protecting the strength of our military rather than feeding our people too – hence their opposition to entitlement programs that help the poor, Gringrich saying the poor are a lazy people who dont have a work culture, their initial opposition to the payroll tax cut, etc. So…that’s why i vote democrat or independent”
Nauseating stuff but worth bringing up because I would not beleive people could write this sort of horse manure if I had not seen it myself. Oh, those 3 posters have 272 “fans” between them.
“And I know that Mr. Il did his best to usher in a truly fair society based upon egalitarian ideas, which is really very courageous.”
“Egalitarian” is Marxist code for forced equality of economic outcome between socially engineered classes of people – even if once class labors (the doomed middle class) and the other class is lazy (the so-called proletariat class). These classes must be made equal by government robbery of the middle class on behalf of the proletariat class by the force of self-serving Marxist government. We simply must have an “egalitarian” society – all people must be economically equal – except of course for the not-to-be-equalized Marxist equalizers – except of course for the Marxist ruling class – except of course for the likes of Marxist tyrants like Kim Jong Il. In Orwellian fashion, Marxist “equal outcome” in property fully depends on an inequality of rights to property, and please don’t think too much about those forcing egalitarianism down our throats – because force requires a superior class of enforcers.
“The usual understanding of “equality,” when applied to people, entails equality of rights and sometimes equality of opportunity. But what is meant in all these [Socialist] cases is the equalization of external conditions [social and economic outcome] which do not touch the individuality of man. In socialist ideology, however, the understanding of equality is akin to that used in mathematics, i.e., this is in fact identity, the abolition of differences in behavior as well as in the inner world of the individuals constituting society. From this point of view, a puzzling and at first sight contradictory property of socialist doctrines becomes apparent. They proclaim the greatest possible equality, the destruction of hierarchy in society and at the same time a strict regimentation of all of life, which would be impossible without absolute control and an all-powerful bureaucracy which would engender an incomparably greater inequality.” Igor Shafarevich
http://www.robertlstephens.com/essays/shafarevich/001SocialistPhenomenon.html
“It had long been realized that the only secure basis for oligarchy is collectivism. Wealth and privilege are most easily defended when they are possessed jointly. The so-called “abolition of private property” [Communist Manifesto] meant in effect the concentration of property in far fewer hands than before… In the years following the Revolution it [The Socialist Party of Oceania] was able to step into this commanding position almost un-opposed because the whole process was represented as an act of collectivization… It had always been assumed that if the Capitalist Class were expropriated Socialism must follow; and unquestionably the Capitalists had been expropriated. Factories, mines, land, houses, transport, everything had been taken away from them; and since these things were no longer private property it followed that they must be public property. Ingsoc [Socialist Principles of Oceania], which grew out of the earlier Socialist movement and inherited its phraseology, has in fact carried out the main item in the Socialist program with the result; foreseen and intended beforehand, that economic inequality has been made permanent.” George Orwell – 1984
LovelyEarth, so you’re “aware that under his rule there was a lot of suffering”?
Did you catch this in Life magazine before your subscription ended in 1961?
Dear NorK Admirer:
Please put down the crack pipe a moment.
The poor ronery Mr. KIM, half-wit, was a blight on humanity. He was as brilliant as he was tall and handsome. Those who support him or anything like him are a disease. Those who admire the UN should only take a two hundred yard walk east of the organization’s headquarters… wearing lead boots.
Feel free to move to the Hermit Kingdom. They need more folks like you.
LovelyEarth:
“otherwise magnificent UN”
You had better stop smoking whatever it is you are snorting now. It is not only illegal, it is bad for your brain. Looks like the latter has already started to have its effects!
“Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser”
hmmm.. a muslim honoring an atheist with a moment of silence..
the marxist/muslim axis of evil on full display..
THe Ambassador from the kingdom of Doha, home of Al Jazeera, and Sheik Quradawi,
who issued the fatwa against Quaddafi.
Whoa there vangrungy, don’t get us atheists mixed up in this! Me and the other non-God fearers were just sitting at the other end of the bar having a quiet beer and minding our own business.
Isn’t the UN still technically at war with North Korea?
Thank you! Excellent, pointed reminder of yet more United Nations hypocrisy. Those of us of a certain age remember the United Nations “Police Action” against North Korea after the North’s invasion of South Korea. The two Korea’s are still technically at war, as the Truce of Panmunjam (…if that’s the correct title of the event…) was not a formal ending of that war, or, so-called U.N. “Police Action”….only a Truce.
It It is true that he was a monster. Most Arab leaders feel that they are pretty much the same way, though to a lesser extent.
Just because you disagree with the way someone rules it does not mean you cannot show them respect.
By not allowing that it is showing a bad precedent.
Birds of a feather…
The UN assembly admires despots and if it could, would rule the world much the same as Kim ruled over N Korea.
Just out of curiosity, what would you expect from a club that had Joseph Stalin as a charter member, and not only that but a charter member with special privileges?
When has the U.N. ever stood against tyranny?
Never. That’s when.
Indeed, many of the ardent members aspire to oppress the masses just as effectively as KJI. Imagine how inspired any freedom craving Korean north of the DMZ must feel about now.
The United Nations serves as living proof of the following concepts –
“Everything to everyone becomes nothing to nobody.”
“None of us are as stupid as all of us.”
“The weakest link in the chain sets the strength.”
The UN is a collection of the dregs of humanity. It promotes child prostitution, poverty and tyranny. Those that believe in it are useful idiots who should be sterilized with strontium 90.
That the United States continues to fund this nest of vipers is living proof that it truly is the Greater Fool.
and this surprises us how?
with all the silly talk from the GOP debates about stopping foreign aid, we would be much better off keeping that $22 billion that goes to the UN instead! the UN is a completely corrupt organization and needs to be closed.
Stop the madness, please USA government, stop funding the UN with our taxpayer money.
Which country hosts the United Nazis?
The USA.
Don’t try to cover this up – Lesbian kisses in the navy on the front cover of the LA Times, the UN, Obama, the stealing of millions of people’s savings through JP Morgan, Lehmann brothers etc. – All fingers point to the USA.
The USA will soon be coming to an end and Americans are doing nothing about it… This is the judgment on the USA – they have become paralyzed even as they observe their own glugging down the toilet of history.
I was shocked to see who was crying the loudest of all: http://moonbattery.com/kim-jong-il-mourners.jpg
U.S. and U.N. Join War on Christmas and Christianity
It’s long been the feeling that opponents of Christmas festivities and observances were just anti-Christian, anti-traditionalists, anti-everythings, with a fringe that was just plain insane.
Now it seems the lunatics have seized total control in the annual War on Christmas and the inmates are calling the shots.
Things were bad enough when atheists throughout America staged mindless, envious, wars against community Nativity scenes, when naked homosexual Santas pranced through San Francisco, when North Korea threatened war with South Korea over Christmas trees, when the USPS ordered a Bellevue, Washington mailman to stop dressing as Santa Claus, and when Rhode Island Governor Chafee refused to call a Providence Christmas tree a Christmas tree.
Now, the anti-Christmasers have entered the realm of the truly bizarre.
And, no, I’m not referring to the Saugus, Massachusetts school system banning a half-century-old tradition of firefighters visiting elementary schools and distributing coloring books because school Superintendent Richard Langlois felt “there is a conflict between the church and the state in that regard.” Supt. Langlois must have gotten coal in his stocking as a kid or bats in his belfry as an adult.
Nor am I referring to the thousands of drunken Santas who overflowed Manhattan’s South Street Seaport area with beer and urine earlier this month during their annual Santacon pub crawl, a spectacle Santacon organizers promised to clean up next year, assuming the drunken Santas aren’t too inebriated.
And, I’m certainly not alluding to the certified fruitcake Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez who, to his temporal credit, did allow a Caracas Nativity display but to his eternal discredit had himself depicted standing next to it “hugging a child” along with scenes of his “flagship socialist projects.”
Allowing for the sources, all those inanities are forgivable. Unforgivable are the actions of the government of the United States and the waste of space on the East River, the United Nations. Both our government and the U.N. are waging active campaigns against both Christmas and Christianity.
As HumanEvents.com reported, thanks to the Barack Hussein Obama administration, bibles are now prohibited at the Walter Reed National Military Center.
That prohibition follows an Air Force Academy apology for Operation Christmas Child, a “Christian-based charity and relief program designed to send holiday gifts to impoverished children around the world” and was preceded by pressures to remove a Camp Pendleton cross meant to honor fallen heroes and the cessation of the Air Force’s 20 year old religious curriculum on “just wars.”
When Obamians gets rolling on an anti-Christian tear, they leave no irreverent stone unturned. Of course, Islamic stones are sacrosanct.
When the last, best hope for mankind gets rolling on tradition revisionism, it leaves even Obamians in its dust.

At this point in time, given the mountain of evidence regarding the true nature of the U.N.; the next sane step would be to kick the bums out of America and stop funding this Leviathan. There are no excuses left for ANY of our lawmakers’ support for this evil bureaucratic nightmare called the U.N.
Enough is enough !!!!! A special ‘thank you’ to Ileana Ros Lehtinen for taking the lead in tackling the monster. Now maybe if some of our brave men would just give the monster some lead in the ear … we’d be better off.
Kick out the North Korean delegation from the U.N. and NYC. Kick out Ban Ki Moon from the U.N. next back to South Korea. He expressed his condolences to NK before the General Assembly. Kick out then all of the U.N. from NYC and the U.S. We can set up a much smaller and genuine international assembly of democracy at the Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
The whole world has gone to the dogs!
This is the best example yet of how dysfunctional and useless the UN is. Ban Kim Moon should be BANned, and the UN should be kicked out of prime real estate space in NYC. An absolutely shameful and despicable act by the UN.
This nicely sumps up what UN is about; a gang of cowards that cannot distinguish the right from the wrong. Their primary mission is to support position of the evils and spread more evils to the world. UN should be shattered and dismantled.
I’d have agreed that the silence of the UN would be acceptable for diplomatic reasons. However, actively sending condolences to a despot of this magnitude shows utter depravity and inhumanity.
Not one penny more for them…
What about Moammar!!! He died in the service of his country!
Here is the scathing assessment of Canada’s Conservative Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, on the death of Kim Jong Il:
“Kim Jong-il will be remembered as the leader of a totalitarian regime who violated the basic rights of the North Korean people for nearly two decades,” Mr Harper said in a statement.
“We hope his passing brings positive change allowing the people of North Korea to emerge from six decades of isolation, oppression and misery. The regime’s reckless decisions have resulted in North Korea being an impoverished nation and a country isolated from the international community because of its dangerous nuclear proliferation and ballistic missile programs.
“At this critical juncture, we urge North Korea to close this sad chapter in its history and to work once more towards promoting both the well-being of its people and stability on the Korean peninsula,” Mr Harper said.
Canada also declined to join the UN’s minute of silence. (Yeah, Canada!)
John Bolton for President.
DEFUND UN NOW.
…you have to appreciate a moment of silence from that crew.
Nice Lady,
The UN you think/wish exist, and the UN that does exist are two different things.
China’s government is an example of a global model of government the UN believes in. Plus, the UN has their own religion with Lucis Trust. Taken together, one could understand why the UN is reprobate.
Kim Jong-il, May He Not Rest in Hell
Normally, it’s proper to show respect for the dead. Kim Jong-il, the bloodthirsty Communist dictator of North Korea is dead and deserved no respect, proper or otherwise.
It’s time, though, to reflect on the passing of the man former Democrat president Jimmy Carter and the United Nations mourned and whose designated heir Carter wished great success.
Apparently born Yuri Irsenovich Kim apparently in Siberia, apparently somewhere Kim decided he wasn’t Siberian and became Kim Jong-il and ruled North Korea in high heels for some 17 years until his apparent death on December 17th or 19th.
Many things are only “apparent” regarding the late despot except his official DPRK titles among which were General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Chairman of that country’s National Defense Commission and Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army–and unofficial titles of “Dear Leader,” “Generalissimo,” and “Great Father of People.”
My favorite Kim title is ”Biggest Fruitcake on the Asian Stage,” not including Hawaii which President Barack Hussein Obama said recently was in Asia.
Among Kim Jong-il’s accomplishments in the “hermit kingdom” were killing millions of his people, starving millions more, maintaining gulags tenanted by 200,000 political prisoners, and establishing North Korea as the most backward nation on the planet this side of Somalia.
As North Koreans were eating the bark off trees to ward off starvation, Kim found the funds to develop missile and nuclear capacities to threaten his neighbors, another feather in his cap not cited by either Mr. Carter or the U.N.
Granted, former President Jimmy Carter has been struggling with senility demons and a desperate search for a legacy following a failed presidency.
Granted, the United Nations is a boil on the world’s arse controlled by the Third World and struggling to seem relevant and objective.
However, have Carter and the U.N. lost what remained of their collective minds to, in Jimmy’s case, send condolences to North Korea and best wishes for success to his son Kim Jong-un and, in the sorry case of the United Nations, offer up a moment of silence in dad’s honor?
Condolences for what? . . .
