This is not by any stretch the sum total of repressive regimes that enjoy seats at the UN. Geostrategic considerations — as policy jargon would have it — have aligned against Assad a number of governments that show no respect at home for the pluralistic, democratic medicine they are prescribing for Syria. But the list above is a good starting point for a basic question:
What are these states in the above list doing to deserve membership in the UN at all? Let alone, why do some of them deserve to sit on such major UN bodies as the Security Council (Russia and China), and such theoretically vital bodies as the Human Rights Council (Russia, China, Ecuador, and Cuba)? The UN charter spells out the conditions of membership. Those conditions include accepting the obligations contained in the UN charter — which specifies such aims as tolerance, freedom, living together in peace, as good neighbors, and reaffirming “faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person.” Does it uphold the UN charter, to allow voting rights at the UN to governments that neither reflect nor support democracy or aspirations for basic freedoms? Governments that look at a resolution condemning such horrors as the atrocities in Syria — and vote no?
There are some suggestions that may never gain traction at the UN. It’s worth saying them out loud, nonetheless. An obvious retort to a list like that above, is: Throw the bums out.

Why is there no UN resolution to free the 30,000 political prisoners in Saudi Arabia?
Yeah! Or the political prisoners in Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, China, Myanmar, Vietnam, North Korea, Syria, Russia…
The United Nations, the lowest common denominator humanity can produce.
Bring on the Untied Nations.
When Marco Rubia gave his speech at CPAC, you know what he said about the Security Council not coming up with a resolution against Syria? He said that the reason why countries like China and Russia voted against it was because they wanted to defend the right to do the same thing in their own country. And I thought that was a brilliant statement. Take a look at the 12 countries on that list. Not only are China and Russia on it, but also countries like Cuba, Iran, and Zimbabwe, hardly models of democracy. There are a lot of bad people in this world and some really terrible countries. I just don’t know anymore why we have to actually pay for the “pleasure” of talking to them in a building in Manhattan. No amount of talking will ever change them, and they know it. Shouldn’t we by now?
The mainstream media including PJM is not allowed to write about Saudi Arabian torture, beheadings, kidnappings, murders, terrorist training camps, Sharia education centers, or any other myriad acts of global terrorism their Sharia government commits.
So the world blunders merrily along, witnessing to its own slow destruction at the hands of Saudi based terrorism and global sharia education centers, openly operating within the USA.
Its a neocon game to insist on democracy for the world. We’re getting democracy in North Africa and we’re not going to like what we get. They’ve got it in Greece and that’s not working out very well, either. Hell, I’m not sure if America is a democracy anymore. I get to vote but the politicians just do what they want.
Way back when the UN was founded the US had just won WW2 and it was looking for a way to get the world talking on a regular basis. If The Superpower – US – doesn’t engage the rest of the world but instead holds our arsenal above their heads to keep the peace, what does that make us? A tyrant?? What a wonderful legacy for our children.
Do you folks really understand the position you occupy in the world? Do you think you won’t be judged by the way you used your power and influence? You just can’t be SP and ignore the rest of the world.
I do suppose it would fit the slovenly MO of a SP in decline, though. Right, just let the rest of them figure it out and get back to us. We’ll be too fat to care by then but at least most of them will be dead.
This is so ignorant I don’t know what to make of it. Are you unclear about the differences between a pure democracy (a majority can vote to genocide a minority) and a Constitutional Republic? When a president smites the Constitution by making recess appointments when the Senate is not in recess, he brings us closer to pure democracy – one where a majority votes to steal from a minority.
A “neocon game”? You mean Jews?
“Do you think you won’t be judged by the way you used your power and influence?” Judged by Whom?
Are you drunk?
The United States of America was never a democracy. The word democracy does not appear once in the constitution. It’s a Republic. BTW all Republics fail and so do democracies. Our end began with Teddy Roosevelt. I sure would like to see him removed from Mt. Rushmore. I’m a neo proto paleocon myself.
The United Nations is as obsolete as it is unsustainable. It is the sole reason for the debt in the United States of America. It failed its mandate from 70 years ago to secure world peace. It failed its charter and needs to disband. Close its doors.
It has become a unit of thugs demanding we in the USA borrow billions from China to give to them every year.
The ought to tele conference and shut the doors to that big building that looks like a washing machine for money.
The UN wants to re-invent itself into some kind of “green thug” agency and come to every town in America and force us to loose all we represent and work for.
Time to quit giving the money to those who hate the US and cause the deaths of our American soldiers. Time to stop paying a bunch of failures who hate freedom and liberty. All the trillions of dollars have only secured more wars…not a penny of that money is every returned or accounted for. Also, those that try to blow the whistle on this corrupt world group, usually meet with a bad ending. Except there is something due out this summer about a UN whistleblower, movie or book. Stop paying the thugs at the unsustainable UN! Also, do like France and get out of NATO.
You aren’t very good at simple arithmetic, I guess.
Our social spending (none of which is Constitutional) DWARFS the money we give to the U.N.
Not that I think we should support the U.N. – far from it.
But your factual error – which is huge – discredits your position.
Totally agree.
France is still part of NATO. Collect you thoughts before subjecting the rest of us to them.
I don’t know, but I suspect that down deep in the do-gooding neo-conservative hearts of Rice, Powers, and Hillary Clinton there was a collective sigh of relief over the Russian and Chinese veto of Syrian sanctions. Their new and improved neo-con Libyan adventure in good democracy turned into a humanitarian fiasco on the cheap without adult supervision–and Gadaffi was back in good grace, simpatico, reformed, even better than “reformist” Assad, as Hillary called him, and Gadafi had even given up his WMD program and was pumping prodigious oil! Imagine the fate of four million Syrian Christians, among others, after the Sunni majority start to settle old democratic scores without adult supervision–and they do have some serious WMD stockpiles. So, it’s the Bush top down model or the bottom up community organizer model for middle east social change? Now which one do you think Al Queda and the Muslim Brotherhood will find simpatico?
There is, so far as I am concerned, only one nation state in the UN whose status is of interest. That is the United States. We should not be in any way be associated with a body that has racked up 65 years of unbroken failure. The UN was a pie in the sky idea in 1945 and has not improved since. It is time to leave and has been for decades.
The dirty dozen and heir kin can have the UN. Get us out of it and it out of the US. Now!
At Yalta FDR gave Stalin Eastern Europe, Manchuria, and North Korea in exchange for Stalin’s promise to join the UN. The Left will never give up this pie-in-the-sky multi-lateral money drain. To ask them to do so is like asking Christians to stop believing in the Resurrection.
there is no reason that I can see for the US to continue to fund nearly one-quarter of the United Nations’ operating budget. it’s a completely corrupt organization virtually run by the OIC that exists to censure Israel and bash America. John Bolton was right when he famously said you could blow up the top 8 floors of the building and nobody would notice.
why should We The People have to fund the UN right there in New York City, to facilitate their anti-Americanism? let them meet somewhere they fit in better, like Cairo.
I wish there was some chance we could get thrown out.
Syria is a no-win situation. On the one hand, it’s led by a brutal dictator. On the other, if there is a popular revolution, it will end up being Islamic, like Iran, or more recently Egypt or Libya.
And why is the Turkish repression of the Kurds completely ignored? Turkey is as brutal as Syria and far. But hey, they’re supposedly our friends, so it’s okay.
Ultimately though, shouldn’t be mind our own business? We’re not going to solve anything – history has shown our meddling just makes things worse. We have so many problems at home, why not try to fix those? Or at least admit we have problems?
For instance, we have far, far more people in jail than any of these repressive countries. Shouldn’t we be asking just why that is? It’s easier to tell others what to do, I guess, distracts us from the rot within.
Really, Jeremy, are you not aware of the current civil war in Syria? Are you comparing the number of individuals the U.S. contains in prisons and the outright killings and mass murders of armed protesters and Syrian civilians including children? Or are you comparing the U.S. prison systems to those of Syria where torture is common and acceptable? Please get off your anti-America horse so you can hit the ground and view clearly what is really going around.
You have it backwards. We should leave, let them stay. Take our money and our prestige and leave. It’s all an excuse for lazy diplomacy and inaction.
What is happening in Syria is a proxy Shia/Sunni war supported on the one side by Iran and the other by Sordid Saudi. This is where the world goes when the Muslims have finally, with the complicity of the Wests left wing moonbats, Multiculturalists, Politically Correct Islamophiles Green Nazis and Gay rights promoters, infiltrated and toppled Western Judeo/Christian Democracy. Islam is a hate and death CULT and needs constant bloodletting just to exist.
Iran wants Armageddon because for them it heralds the return of Imam Ali and the subsequent domination of the world by Shia Islam.
We ought to throw the U.N. out…
OBVIOUS AND LONG-OVERDUE SOLUTION: The US and other free nations should set up an alternative body called the United Free Nations (UFN) that takes its own membership charter and declaration of human rights seriously.
Why should free nations be “United” with dictatorships that should have been ineligible under the UN Charter to be part of the UN in the first place? The UN is worse than a farce, it’s a scam to give legitimacy to murderous dictators.
All US funding should be transferred from the UN to the UFN. The UN will become de facto the United Dictatorships (UD), and will be marginalized from world affairs and the benefits of Western Civilization. At best, they’re nothing but a dead weight, and at worst they make the US complicit in crimes carried out under cover of the UN.
The UFN can still negotiate with the UD to prevent wars, however UD nations will no longer gain the advantage of tax-payer resources from the UFN countries to support and legitimize their evil. Every nation should have a clear choice whether to align with the Allies of Freedom or with the Axis of Evil, instead of attempting (like India’s flaunting the sanctions against Iran) to have it both ways.
Because Obama (as have prior US presidents since the UN was founded) lacks the moral principles to stop paying, supporting, and legitimizing the dictatorships in the UN, the GOP candidate should. (I’m surprised that Ronald Reagan didn’t break from the UN, since he certainly understood and disapproved its corruption.)
Old Soldier … I agree.
While we’re lamenting about this U.N. monster; they don’t care what we think, (kinda like the current administration). Action please; stop supporting that evil bunch with our money! America is better than that; we should be leading not following a bunch of totalitarian morons.
Long ago, when I was an ignorant liberal, I thought that the UN did so many wonderful things. When I finally got a brain, I realized that a Brown Sugar org. they are. Literally, the last good thing the UN did was help us in the Korean War. And that happened by accident as the Soviets pulled their ambassador to the UN & they couldn’t veto the action. The UN has long outgrown any moral or decent mission they ever had. Now? Well, they are full of spies, corrupt pimps stealing as much money as they can, & tin pot dictators. We should bag the UN. Withdraw & kick them out of NY. Start another org. w/ the US, Canada, NZ, Australia & the UK. Call it the Org For Int’l Security w/ a goal to knock off regimes like NK, Iran, Zimbabwe,Saudi Arabia, Syria, Venezuela, Burma, & the Chicoms. Forget about world peace! I want those countries in pieces…
These 12 are countries that would be prepared (like Russia in Chechnya) to behave exactly like Syria should their regimes be threatened. No mystery here.
The UN was founded at the instigation of Eleonor Roosevelt and her Progressive friends; this is all you have to know. Roosevelt et al were the cheerleaders for Stalinist Russia and other communist regimes. Somehow the self righteous American upper class always is attracted to the worst elements in human nature. They pushed for all the horrible wars which slaughtered so many; Lincoln and his gang lusted for bloodshed and brought about the worst humanitarian disaster on American soil by invading the South. One need not look only at the UN for culprits but also to look at the American ruling class and its university educated elite who spend most of their time plotting another conflagration. GET US OUT OF The UN
I do not question why the deliberative body of the UN exists. It is a reflection of all the generally recognized countries in the world, whether we like it or not.
However, there are other international bodies: Economic forums, Military alliances, one ought to question why it is the UN doing much of the international peace-making, or military deployments. It does not represent a reality of what force can actually be projected where.
In effect, what I’m arguing is that the UN’s mission is so narrow that it is basically irrelevant –and yet people keep piling on all sorts of responsibilities and irrelevant agendas on it. The problem is not that the UN exists, it is that it deliberates on stuff that it can’t do a damned thing about.
‘The UN’ is a cautionary tale for where any organization might go, over time.
Started with good intentions almost 7 decades ago, but in recent years morphing into some gigantic, well-heeled body to be manipulated by special interests, most alarmingly, anti-Israel and pro-transnationalist interests.
Now working for a kind of world governance, regularly holding conferences around the world on all kinds of topics, indulgences for its overly well fed and overly smug collection of ideologically driven members.
Incremental transformations over time happen with most organizations that may have been conceived with generally good intentions, even groups like The Sierra Club & Amnesty International.
“Special” interests come to dominate, and, sooner or later, the thing is unrecognizable from its beginnings.
That guy who said the road to hell is paved with good intentions…wasn’t kidding.
The world doesn’t need the UN period.
Voting rights in the UN should reach some compromise between equality of country and equality by person or equality proportional to international trade. In other words, larger democracies (or republics) ought to have more voting power than smaller ones.
Tyrannies ought not to get a vote (since their voice doesn’t represent the population but only a small cadre.)
ONE country that doesn’t need UN: USA.
Throw the bums out.
If the US gets out of the UN, as we should, then it doesn’t matter a damn what the rest of that body does.
We should follow up the exit with a horde of bulldozers to push the building into the river and then salt the earth it stands on.
The number one is the US. We nee to get out and DEFUND.
I’m in agreement with American Eagle.
