Well said, Zo, and you raised points that hadn't occurred to me (not many can make that claim).

Here's my take on the core of this issue. Marriage is not a 'right' (though it is a 'rite' -- rimshot). It is a cultural institution. It was not created by any legislature, tribunal or civil executive. Therefore, none of those state offices has the legitimate authority to alter it in any way.

This fits in well with your observations. The state must keep out of it.

While I understand how an average patriot can be torn, hoping to satisfy all sides in this "civil war" of sorts, the fact of the matter is it is neither here nor there. What really matters is WHY the leaders against DOMA - outside and inside the gov't - are upending it, including the court.

Here's the thing: doing so moves them one step closer to "transforming" America, and not in a patriotic way - http://adinakutnicki.com/2013/06/28/the-gay-in-chief-exposes-himself-once-again-excited-about-knocking-down-doma-makes-time-to-call-gay-couple-why-commentary-by-adina-kutnicki/

Again, there is a there there.
