Well said, Zo, and you raised points that hadn't occurred to me (not many can make that claim).

Here's my take on the core of this issue. Marriage is not a 'right' (though it is a 'rite' -- rimshot). It is a cultural institution. It was not created by any legislature, tribunal or civil executive. Therefore, none of those state offices has the legitimate authority to alter it in any way.

This fits in well with your observations. The state must keep out of it.
