"What the consumer wanted no longer mattered, and what downscale readers wanted was disdained."

When the industry is founded on an anti-market premise, is it any surprise that it attracts those who vehemently oppose free trade and capitalism? It's got to be tough when you've spent a century operating a monopoly, using every unsavory tactic imaginable to crush any competition and then the internet removes all of the barriers to entry that you've so skillfully erected. It's a wonder none of those antitrust newshawks ever investigated their own papers, they could have won a Pulitzer.

pch1013, The solution is in the future, when the Internet will provide us with a multitude of voices competing in a freewheeling marketplace of ideas. Britney fans will be able to follow every one of her burps and stumbles 24 hours a day. Others can choose not to. Think market segmentation applied to news.

So the problem with American journalism is not too much coverage of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, but too little?

Well said! And too true. Today journalism represents the view of an elite who live apart from the people in their own echo chamber.

Thank goodness for Murdoch, who understands what real people want, with his own experience in overseas "yellow" journalism.
