"Feeling betrayed?"

Let's not over-dramatize - the word "betrayed" is a little over-the top; "disappointed" will do quite well.

I can't really say I feel regularly "betrayed" by anyone or anything - the times I have been truly betrayed by anyone important, I can count on one hand without using all the fingers.

Anger is one of the Seven Deadlies - I refuse to give myself over to it, no matter who's in office. Just a happy camper, I guess....

The comparisons to Reagan are awful. Reagan understood conservatism at a level where he could explain its relationship to both libertarianism and religious ideas; he understood it at a solid philosophical level and knew how to communicate it, which made him very difficult to debate. Sarah Palin holds contempt for educated people in big cities, whereas Reagan won these voters by landslides. Sarah Palin's form of Ricky Bobby Conservatism is nothing more than a series of talk radio-friendly slogans, and she would get shredded in any actual debate where she might be confronted with examples of limitations and even failures of conservative economic or social policies.
I was excited about her at first; I spent some time in Alaska while she was Governor there, and I was impressed by her pragmatism. But the Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric interviews were absolutely painful. Those were not difficult questions, but she came across as a good-hearted, sincere person who does not read.
Sarah Palin should be supported in response to attacks from the left, but to say she is above criticism because she makes the Nascar crowd feel warm and tingly all over? How does she make people in cities feel? How does she make Hispanics feel? Does she appeal to any other demographics that would be needed to win an election outside of Alaska?
I am certain she is a fantastic person in a million different ways, but seriously- is this the best that conservatism has to offer?

I've developed some sympathy for Palin over the past few months -- not only has she had to deal with all this enormous pressure of hope and faith placed on her by disgruntled old-school conservatives, but also one investigation after another in her home state, plus lots of dismissive and cruel criticism by members of her own party. In contrast, Tina Fey's imitations of Palin seem rather good humored.

But the Republican party is not has not been for a long time the party of intellectuals and increasingly, for good reason, is also being seen as the "anti-science" party to boot. Palin is much more in keeping with I consider the "good conservative" -- being mostly concerned with fiscal responsibility, personal freedoms, family, a healthy economy, and a strong military. Someone like that I can have a beer with because I know people like that. Compare her to a "new-school" conservatives like a Glenn Beck or a Michelle Malkin -- people who eye-rollingly fake knowledgeability to just relentlessly spew out the most insane and often purely malicious rubbish, and to a very disturbingly large fan base.

So all things considered, Palin and people like her, represent true, honest conservatism, and where the Republican party should return to away from all their neocon, bizarro nonsense that has served only to weaken the country, polarize people, and obstruct getting anything done.

As an aside, that comment of about how "liberals like Ted Kennedy can overcome despicable incidents like Chappaquiddick and emerge unscathed" is absolute, crackpot rubbish, especially in terms of Kennedy -- how may times and in how many different venues has Chappaquiddick been brought up now, never mind how it impacted his plans to run for President as his brothers had? Jeez Louise.....

Maybe liberals were afraid of her running because she's an idiot and republicans didn't seem to care. Again.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the porno someone made called "Nailin' Paylin," with a look-a-like no less.

Had that happened to any other politician, there woulda been an outcry. Happens to former Gov Palin, and people seem to smile and wink and watch.

Shameful.

Governor Palin lost a lot of credibility with me when she resigned. Believe the resignation cost her any hope of being a successful presidential candidate.
