Gas prices hit records this winter. Who is to blame? Col. Allen B. West talks to Daniel Kish of the Institute for Energy Research about the reasons for the recent spike in gasoline prices. While some are quick to blame speculators, Kish says that byzantine environmental regulations are partially to blame. Can simple legislative changes lower gas and oil prices? Find out.

Domestic oil production is at its highest point since 1993, yet prices remain high. Why? Global demand, plain and simple. We are exporting huge amounts of refined and unrefined petroleum products (our biggest export btw). Personally I take any perspectives offer by the Institute for Energy Research, funded by oil and gas interests, with a rather large dose of salt.

Originally, the taxes charged when you bought a gallon of gas were supposed to go to maintaining infrastructure, specifically roads, bridges and tunnels. However, typical of all things the governement touches, the funds have gone into the general fund rather than being reserved for what the American public was told they would be used for. If you want another example, you need look no further than when Lydon Johnson did away with the Social Security "Lock Box" and put all the income tax into the general fund in the 70's. After that, it became simple for the government to increase taxes for what ever hair brained scheme they came up with. The vehicle was already there. It just became a matter of how much they could push it until the public began to squak. Apparently, we have yet to reach that threshold.
