What’s Wrong with Making Future Generations Pay for our Debt?
Come on; we all know what future generations are like. They’re going to look back at us and say, “Oh, look at those people from 2011 with their backwards morals and primitive scientific knowledge! What a bunch of cavemen!” Yeah, that’s right; they’re going to make fun of us. And while they’re making fun of us, they’ll be playing around with their laser guns and jet packs and robot maids — all of which they’ll completely take for granted. Future generations are a bunch of arrogant, over-privileged punks! I hate them. And I don’t see any reason to feel bad for leaving such awful people tons of debt. Maybe that will wipe those smug smiles off their genetically altered faces.
So there’s really no downside to leaving debt to those horrible jerks in the future. None.
…Unless they get so angry at us that they send terminators from the future to kill us. That’s definitely a possibility, but if they try that, we can easily fight back. For instance, we could bury a bunch of time capsules that are not to be opened for fifty years. Then when future generations open them — BOOM!
Yes, some might label this “terrorism,” but the true terrorism is the notion that we should be paying this debt now, and we’re not going to stand for it. We need to send the message to future generations that he who controls the present controls the future, and that means we can easily hurt them — much more easily than they can get to us. And if those arrogant scumbags think that we’re going to pay for that debt here in the present, well, we have a few violent messages for them. They should just be happy that debt is the only thing we’re leaving for them, because it could be a lot worse.
So, to any future generations reading this in the internet archives on your holographic screens — or perhaps downloading it directly to your brains — I have this to tell you: It would be nothing for us to destroy everything you hold dear. Why, we can just nuke this whole world now, and that’s the end of you. And you can’t stop us. So that’s why you’re going to pay all of our debt and like it.
Or you can just leave the debt to your children as well. I don’t see any problem with that. Frankly, I think we should all just keep passing it on until society collapses under it and the apes takeover. Then they can pay down the debt. Big hairy jerks.

We are getting tied up in what the meaning of is is. Please remember that this Whitehouse Administration and Democrat controlled Senate has declared honest principled Republicans to be terrorist threats to the world and to their administration. The TSA and FBI have both been directed to investigate groups that have not broken any law and the DOJ Outlaws are currently sueing states which enforce Federal Law.
Look at this way too. Future generations, if they were good people, would have sent smart folks back in time to fix everything that we broke or prevented us from breaking it in the first place, wouldn’t they? there is another alternative to this terrible dilemma, one brought up in the last unpresidential campaign by one of the participants. it’s really out there, and surely nobody gave it a second thought. that is…wait for it… take every bit of wealth this country has and redistribute to the rest of the world.

A few minor linked changes to the legal definitions of ‘competent’ and ‘voter’
will solve the problem nicely, allowing the youngsters to ignore the senescent

Inflation makes non-workers paupers and you get the kind of law you pay for.
Pay the debt down, or your retirement won’t be as rosy. The people caring for you may not want to care for you as much if you leave them in debt.
Note that I didn’t write the word Children. Ladies and Gentlemen, if you don’t at least maintain a replacement level of population, there won’t be children to take care of you. Europe is figuring that lesson out right now. They import workers who can exist there for generations without citizenship. Will those people feel the allegiance to care for the preceding generation with all that debt?

Wow, that was the most screwed up thing I have ever read. No one forced you to have kids, it was YOUR choice as you said a million times in your comment. So, your kids have a CHOICE as well whether or not to pay that debt, and it is most certainly NOT their fault in any way.

I believe that’s a little harsh. Some people are actually guileless and relentlessly sincere rather than stupid and they have a hard time understanding that someone would write or say things they don’t mean. One problem with your argument those under 18 are minors and can not even enter into a legal contract, they basically get what those that are of legal age give them with their own informed or uninformed vote as to representation!

Actually, the future generations inherit the debt but they also inherit the means to pay it, namely the Treasury bonds.

I think Thomas_L in post #2 is onto something. If people of the future didn’t like our debt, they would have sent terminators back to stop us. The fact that they haven’t is 100% scientific proof that people in the future like our debt. They probably LOVE it.
We are always hearing about how today’s white people benefited from slavery and stuff. So it’s only logical to conclude that tomorrow’s people will benefit from everything we do today. Therefore, we can and should make them pay for our existence, because without us, where would they be??

Wait a minute, you’ve given me the idea for a cunning plan. The Chinese have gotten real testy with us about the bonds they bought from us losing value. Also they have a demographic problem due to the one family per child policy. Too many old people not enough workers. So we just send them our future generations, in fact we could send them some of our present generations of youth in exchange for not acting like they belong to the green tea party and constantly nagging us about the debt. Funny you mention that. A german youth told me that in the future we will have a world currency soon, once all the other currencies collapse. When I asked whats going to back up the value of the global dollar, he said, “us.”

Amidst all the snark, there is a legitimate issue about sticking future generations with due bills. Certain government expenditures will actually benefit future generations and, with the humility of cloudy foresight, it seems fair to incur debt that our progeny will pay. Ridding the world of Hitler comes to mind, along with spending enough to implode the Soviet Union. Permanent infrastructure that the future will enjoy also qualifies: the Panama Canal, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Interstates, Hoover Dam. But, if a government expenditure only benefits current citizens, it is a crime against our descendants to force them to pay.

Of course anybody who is under 50 today will still be alive in 30 yrs when the country goes broke, and will probably depend on SS, since if they were stupid enough to vote dem, they would also be stupid enough to beleive that SS would never go broke.
