What Will It Take?

Americans still seem willing to give a pass to the disaster in the White House.

Let me begin with a categorical statement that, given current events and recent political history, can be easily defended: Barack Hussein Obama is a willful, indoctrinated child of the Left with strong Islamic sympathies who is not fit to govern. Indeed, he would not be fit to govern Lower Slobovia, let alone the United States of America. Obama is a historic disaster of the first magnitude and, if not restrained, he will see to the irrevocable decline of the country which foolishly elected him, leaving the world on the brink of a conflict — or in the midst of one — whose repercussions cannot be underestimated.

Accompanying the undeniable havoc and damage that Obama is wreaking on his country and equally on its allies — Honduras, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Poland, Czech Republic, Israel, and possibly Taiwan — is the sense of helplessness that overcomes one when writing or speaking about a rogue president and his destructive administration. I feel this personally, having done my utmost in books, articles and lectures, from 2008 to the present, to warn whomever might read or listen that Obama represented a greater threat to the U.S. and the oddly named “free world” than any of our most dedicated and belligerent enemies. Even prior to his nomination as the Democratic candidate for the presidency, my distrust of this man was proprioceptive. And after his Missouri address, I wondered why anyone would want to “fundamentally transform” a country which, for all its flaws, perched atop the pinnacle of success in comparison to any other country.

Everything Obama has done since then has only served to confirm what was originally a deep suspicion and soon grew to become a complete certainty. Dozens of meticulously researched books have been published to the same effect. And yet very few people seemed to be paying attention. No less disconcerting, those who argue that to criticize Obama is a sign of deep-dyed racism are, of course, relying on slander and misappropriation of language to protect their chosen standard bearer and his Marxist/progressivist/utopian project.

What will it take to convince the ersatz aristocracy of frivolous intellectuals and brainless celebrities, partisan journalists, editors and academics, and an indifferent or deluded laity that they are heading for a crisis that will change our lives immeasurably for the worse? The evidence is beyond dispute.

America is drowning in a state of unredeemable debt — $17 trillion in actual debt and, according to economic historian Niall Ferguson, in the vicinity of $200 trillion in unfunded liabilities, while one in five households depends on food stamps. At the same time, it is printing money like there’s no tomorrow — and there may not be — while subsidizing green energy fiascos at enormous cost to the taxpayer ($90 billion in wasted stimulus funds, and counting). It finds itself in the throes of a metastasizing race war, caused in no small degree by the president’s rhetoric and behavior and fomented by his attorney general. It is a country increasingly governed by executive fiat and by an administration rocked by a near-endless gyre of political and ideological scandals. It is a country whose federal government opposes voter ID, opening the door to electoral corruption. It is a country that spies on its own citizens, software corporations and web search engines, tries avowed terrorists in civilian courts, allows its ambassador and his entourage to be killed, without reprisal, and suffers its higher echelons to be riddled with Muslim Brotherhood operatives, giving the impression of a College of mujtahids. They are the advance cohort. “Today,” writes Larry Kelley in his sobering book Lessons from Fallen Civilizations, “millions of militant Muslims awake every morning plotting the destruction of the US. Many are among us.” And there will be more, if these reports of fast-tracking the citizenship applications of large numbers of Muslim immigrants are reliable, as they appear to be.

It is a country whose president purges its military — 197 senior officers, including nine commanding generals — as did Turkey’s autocratic leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to ensure the continuity of his regime. It is a country that refuses to defend its borders, even suing to keep them as porous as possible. It is a country shifting precipitously to the Left, now mired in the exorbitant socialist travesty of Obamacare built on an ascending pyramid of lies and false enrollment numbers — or in the words of L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Patrick Frey at his Patterico blog, “they’re not just lying about politics now. They’re lying about data. They’re lying about everything. All the time. Constantly. It’s what you have to do to prop up an unsustainable government. … You lie and lie and lie and lie and lie and lie and lie.”

It is a country whose domestic agenda is predicated on the Marxist principle of redistributive economics that amounts to stealing from the productive class to maintain an ever-growing parasitical constituency. It is a country at war with honest science, transmuting NASA into a program for Muslim outreach and buying into the Gore/Hansen/Mann-inflated, IPCC climate scam. It is a country that is retreating on every front and that has lost the Middle East as well as the respect of its adversaries. It is a country that betrays its allies and endangers the world in the process, as in the phony, eagerly sought agreement that allows a self-described genocidal and nuclearizing Iran to keep spinning its centrifuges while profiting from relaxed sanctions. It is a country whose administration has sold its loyal partner, Israel, down the Jordan River.

“The United States is no longer a rational nation,” mourns James Lewis. “Under Obama we are burning our traditional allies, and since weakness brings aggression, Iran is now empowered, China is grabbing ocean territory for shale deposits, and the worst offenders against women’s rights are now elected to the UN Human Rights Commission.” It is hard to contend with his summation.

All this proceeds under the direction of a president who has sealed his vital documents so that very little of crucial importance is known about him.  Roger Simon notes, as many others have done, “that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal he received financial preferences, scholarships and/or loans, as a foreign student.” I have been arguing this thesis, and more, for several years about a president who is essentially a cipher. Intentional lack of evidence comprises evidence of its own that something is amiss. Further, if Obama was a foreign student, it follows that his presidential legitimacy is in question. But Simon is forgiving here, averring that he “would vote in a heartbeat for a foreign born person if I thought he or she were the best candidate, assuming it was all legal and public.…” Pace Simon, considering Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the United States Constitution, how such a process could be legal is distinctly moot.

Indeed, all other reasons aside, to have conferred immense power on a public figure with so meager a track record and so thin and discontinuous a résumé defies even the most rudimentary logic. Who is this man who sits in the Oval Office? (As PJM commenter “cfbleachers” correctly remarks in response to a previous article of mine, “Obama has spent his entire life perfecting the art of the mask.”) And what is his modus operandi? “Obama,” writes Dinesh D’Souza in Obama’s America: Unmaking the American Dream, published just prior to the 2012 election, “is possessed of a certain low cunning that makes him politically formidable. Obama’s skill…is to figure out what the American people want to see and hear, and then give it to them, while doing something entirely different.” By 2012 Obama’s lack of a paper trail, his craftiness and his penchant for deceit should have been blatantly obvious to any sensible and mature American voter, irrespective of class, race or gender.

TV personality Monica Crowley concurs. In a recent speech, she spelled out what should have been plain for all to see: “We have a president who…came out  of the swamps of Chicago machine politics, who learned at the knee of the communist revolutionary Frank Marshall Davis, who studied under Marxist professors…who trained intensively in the revolutionary tactics of Saul Alinsky, who launched his political career in the living room of Marxist revolutionaries and domestic terrorists… who for two decades sat in the pews of the radical anti-American preacher, who tried desperately to bury that past, who spoke about the fundamental transformation of the nation…who waged war on entire news organizations, Fox News, and who spent his first term slamming into place radical wealth redistribution and socialized medicine….What I’m describing here is the classic tin-pot dictatorship. We never thought it could happen here, and yet, here it is….Those of us in this room knew what was going on from the beginning before he was even elected president, but now it’s starting to dawn on more and more people what is really happening here.” She is right. Even for those who were not “in this room,” there should have been little doubt that Obama was a man without a discernible moral core, inspired by an anti-American political philosophy and utterly devoid of presidential heft.

But American voters were ready to be taken in by a smooth-talking, shape-changing, confidence-man, like the gullible “marks” in Melville’s last novel about the exploits of an adroit charlatan, and to trust the image rather than the substance (or absence of same). This is another way of saying that America elected the results of Obama’s wholly predictable dogmatic fecklessness. America elected not to be America anymore, to fundamentally transform itself from a solvent, powerful, feared and respected nation into a quasi-European basket case. America surrendered to reparation chromatics, as if seeking absolution for a history that no one today is responsible for and that Obama himself never experienced. Admittedly, Obama’s approval ratings have plunged of late, but public opinion is notoriously volatile and will probably rebound at some point. Liberal dogma and white guilt will see to that. One can only hope it will assume the form of a dead cat bounce.

The question remains. What will it take to awaken the tranquilized sector of the public and shake the elite corps of complacent opinion-makers out of their blind and factional torpor? How long before reality pre-empts fantasy? “The last five years of the Obama administration,” writes Russian émigré Alexander Markovsky, “have been like living on a volcano.” How long before the lava starts to flow?

One must hope that America will come to its collective senses before it is too late. But I am afraid that it will take nothing less than a major catastrophe, a fiscal implosion that takes the “food” out of food stamps, coupled with more high-casualty terrorist attacks both abroad and on its own soil, leading to the eruption of civil unrest and the possible impeachment of the most destructive president in the entire pageant of American history — a sorcerer’s apprentice in a house on fire or a Machiavellian schemer following a carefully contrived plan — before America emerges from its devastating slumber. Assuming, of course, that it ever does, or that a path to recovery will still be possible. For nothing is guaranteed in a nation so divided as America is today.

obama is, indeed, a rogue President. But the larger problem is that we have a rogue government which refuses to reign him in.

In a place that contains Roger Simon, its creator, VDH...its brilliant guardian of the last stand of the nation, Glenn Reynolds and his lovely bride...the exhibits of grace and architects of collective freedom, Rich Fernandez...a beacon of light so brilliant, he makes a path during a time on an ocean of lies and darkness that allows safe passage through troubled waters, Bill Whittle, Scott Ott, Stephen Green...brave warriors on the front lines...and all the rest...heroes all...with all the heroic brilliance that has been brought to us through this medium....THIS...stands now at the top of the class.

The seminal question of the essay...what do we do now?

It is a serious one and deserves a serious answer, not a glib or shallow soundbite. Not a slogan.

It is a complex matter and will not be properly addressed by a simple answer.

I believe. I believe in this nation. I believe in my countrymen. I believe in a power of goodness. I believe in the basic tenets of honor, loyalty, and righteousness. I believe in the the common core of our covenant to each other and the duty to cherish and protect the gifts we have been bequeathed by those who gave sacrifices, including the greatest sacrifice so that we may inherit freedom from tyranny and live in liberty. I believe in a higher power, from whom we receive the greatest gift of will. Our nation was conceived in this image...that if we mirror heaven, with all our flaws, faults and frailties as mankind...we could approximate paradise the closest that the clumsy hands of man could construct.

Our ties to Israel come from a modern love for freedom loving people and an ancient bond with lessons handed down about basic salt of the earth people trying to live a life of simple rules of honor and decency.

That moral construct is under siege. The main goals of divide and conquer first take place in communication, culture and core values. Propaganda, peer pressure and parsing of words...complete the table setting for our demise.

First, you seize and seal the press...make it impossible for the lazy and preoccupied to hear and believe the truth.
Second, you seize and seal pop culture. Make human decency, honor and loyalty "uncool".
Third, you seize and seal the lexicon. Make even the "bitter clingers", the last line of defense, the most patriotic...use YOUR WORDS AND PHRASES that they unwittingly advance your mask.
Fourth, seize and seal academia , so that children at their most impressionable ages will be bathed in the waters of deceit and treason through academic fraud.

When those tables are will take half a century...THEN...divide by race, class, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sexual preference. These are the theaters of war upon which all battles will be fought. Slander the patriots as "oppressors" of each of these suspect classes and have your Propaganda Machine paint Marxists as the "defenders", which necessitates wiping clean the bloody slate of history.

You cannot call yourself what you are because of the horrific historical stain, so hide as "compassionate liberals", "progressives"...even soft "euro-social democrats". Do not fire a single bullet...yet.

Make a blood pact with those who wish to kill believers. They will do your violence and relish the task. But hide the real reason for that pact, to keep the sheared sheep with their senses dulled and their wits dimmed.

Then, begin to beat them with their own sense of adherence to rules, regulations, laws and honor. They believe in fair play and will whine when you break every rule...but will not cross that line themselves. This will make them slow-footed, halting, hesitant to you lie, cheat and steal their freedoms. Move swiftly in shredding their most sacred rule books .

As you strip their freedoms and anyone who defends....a racist. Greedy. Misogynist. Flamethrow with gasoline any reputation of such a defender. Slander them en masse.

The guilt-tripped and easily duped will pick up your banner and carry it for you into their own graveyards. By the time the effects of freedom stripping hits the useful will be too late to defend a nation that will have sealed its own fate.

So, what is the answer to David's seminal question?

Believe in each our salt of the earth basic goodness.

Do not let them divide and conquer us.

Second, CEASE AND DESIST using their words and phrases that keeps their masks on. Unmask them. They are NOT "liberal", they are NOT "progressive". Their Propaganda Machine is NOT "mainstream".

The only way to un-trip guilt and awaken the slumbering to show them how they are being used and what evil is being done in their name. Understand that the useful idiots are not the shepherds of evil, they are the unwitting sheep.

Use the power of what they are trying to steal and seal. They want your money. Don't give it to them. They have sponsors for their TV A

I don't understand the political class's inability to say "no" to increased spending. If they could just freeze spending at current levels, with no baseline increases, say for five years, the country would have a chance to stabilize prior gross federal fiscal mismanagement. (They can't even prepare a budget anymore.) We're borrowing 30% of our spending, this is fiscal suicide and the the political class knows it. We have crossed the fiscal Rubicon and today's vote (332-94) just stomps on the accelerator. God help our Country, we're in deep trouble.

It will take a revolution.
We have a bigger crime being committed by the usurper, AKA, Obama, against ALL U.S. Citizens, that is bigger than the crime committed by Bernie Madoff, yet Madoff has been charged, convicted, and is already rotting in prison for his crimes.
Why not the criminal that is posing as the pResident???
AKA has committed treason, as well as Violations of the Logan Act, These are Federal Felonies.

Misprision of a Felony is a Federal Felony, But NOT for AKA!
Does anyone even know the usurpers legitimate legal name???
Take your pick, Barry Soetoro, Harrison J. Bounell, Barry Dunham, or Barack Obama.
AKA, You have a one in four chance of being correct.

Why do we have courts who will ignore the Constitution, Federal laws, and the facts?
What has become of America? America Got STUPID!
Is AKA also the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood? He is after all a Muslim who practices taqqiyah.

Rest In Peace America, You are done. Taken out by a usurper!
America Got STUPID!
No laws apply to the usurper!
We have a metastasizing cancer on the pResidency.
We have become a banana republic on our path to becoming a totally communist nation,
America fell to the Obama error.

I was born and raised in this country and I can trace ancestors on both sides all the way back to the early 1600s, so I'm from a long line of America-loving, patriotic, people who, most of which (myself included) are proud veterans. I never thought I would see the apathy and unconcern the majority of people have for our country. Just about any politicians we vote into office, turn on us; the Tea Party has lost it's spark and the rest are either not paying attention or not caring. For the first time in my life, I am actually looking to move to another country, once I retire in a couple of years. I never thought this would happen!

Solway: absolute tour-de-force of an article. You saved the best for last: 1) Some of us have studied O enough and know and agree w/ everything you stated, until 2) Your last paragraph is the crux, and is thought-provoking, as you intended, and it represents the unknown of the next few years. With the MSM against us, it's possible Boehner & Ryan don't want a budget/debt-limit showdown/shutdown, because it would be blamed on the Repubs, and ensuing chaos might result in the Democrats looking good to voters for '14 and '16. They might be right. And if they are, we have NO CHANCE for fiscal responsibility. But.....delaying some federal budget cuts is also alarming. We're certainly in a fiscally irresponsible 'box' with no smooth way out. Let's hope for the best, but prepare for the worst !! :)

I was crushed when they rehired Clinton, hurts to capitalize that. Kept rekindling faith in the populace again and again only to be let down..
We let them take education, and they deformed our people. They are not only uncritical but gullible and predisposed to socialism. Many years ago it dawned on me no ten year old is a sodomite, they go to College to learn tolerance for not only sexual deviance but white guilt, it's been insidious but open and obvious. At this time it will require retraining and the opperatunity ACA gives is to offer proof of the need for retraining. What is actually good for any nation, for us, the people, I think it's further gone than most admit.

This is an excellent article indeed. Mr. Solway articulates almost PRECISELY what has been going through my head these past five and a half years.

That very question goes through my mind practically EVERY DAY...."What will it take?"

It is like a noxious cloud that hangs over everything.

We have to work and pray for a better tomorrow, I guess.

But I say here now, as convenient and handy a 'lightning rod' as Obama may be...Obama is A problem, not THE problem.

By himself, he'd just have been another obscure waco left wing punk academic America-bashing Islamist apologist, polluting the air of some lecture hall in some corner of the pitiful excuse for higher learning that is academia today. They're a dime a dozen.

But THE REAL problem is the media that enabled him every step of the way, backed up by the corrupt educational system that in turn allowed so many Americans to buy their b.s.

Consider that a mere fifteen years ago, we impeached a president over lying about an affair with an intern, for cryin' out loud. Any one of several scandals associated with Obama are, by themselves, incomparably worse than anything Slick Willie had ever done, yet the "conventional wisdom" among today's talking head class is that Obama "can't be impeached".

If, in 2008, we had the same media we had in say, the early 90s, Obama never would have been nominated, let alone elected. And that's even with our marginally educated, bread-and-circuses distracted populace.

Something has gone TERRIBLY WRONG with our media in the last decade or so. With the PARTIAL exception of FOX/WSJ - I like to call them the 'pretend opposition media' - the major national-level print and broadcast mass media has utterly abandoned their critical role as the first line of defense that a free democracy has against the likes of Obama. Until they somehow re-commit themselves to some basic level of professiional integrity, as opposed to their current role as a virtual re-incarnation of the old Cold War Soviet media, it is hard for me to see a way out of this mess wiithout incredible loss and pain for our country and the world in general. We're in for it bad enough going forward as it is right now.

And please don't anyone here talk to me about how the "legacy media" is obsolete and now we're in this Brave New World of the Internet, blah blah blah. The Internet is great...but it is very diffuse, fragmented, with a self-selecting audience for this or that point of view. The power of the "legacy media" has been demonstrated in the last few months with Obama's plummeting poll numbers...a fact which happens to coincide with the major legacy media's relatively honest treatment of the Obamacare debacle. Just that ONE issue reported more or less honestly....and whaddya know? All of a sudden, Obama's poll numbers are going into the toilet.

Imagine if the media had shown such minimal professional competence starting in early 2012. That by itself would have made the difference in this past election. Say what you want about Romney - he wasn't my first choice either - but whatever his faults were, he'd have still been a massive improvement over Obama.

That is what needs fixing: this utterly corrupt mass media. It is over that issue that I find myself most frequently asking myself: "WHAT WILL IT TAKE?"

These things, situations, jaw-dropping revelations about this country are absolutely true. As has been stated before, these times are 'biblical in nature and scope.' I have like others believed that with the coming of The Obama that the uniqueness of his life, in comparission with ALL the other polititians has but one designer. I believe that, ever since 1947, when the SCOTUS ruled in an 8-1 decision that God and belief in God is unconstitutional, this nation/people have pushed God out. The Obama is Gods' answer to a nation who, being dedicated to "IN GOD WE TRUST" decides to throw God, mockingly to the curb, needs a reminder that God will not be mocked.

It is with a stunning collaspe of our economy, world power and increased lawlessness that first gave me the impression that it is not just another 'Same S**t Different Day' kind of occasion. This is a Biblical response to a godless nation. The Obama and his Democrat/RINO supporters are Gods' gift to an ungreatful nation and I have no idea where it will end. "The mind of man has many plans but the purpose of the Lord is established.' Prov.

Obama struck me as false from the moment I laid eyes on him. His body language and speech patterns seemed contrived and disingenuous and I have never understood how Americans could not see what I saw. A related observation --- Years ago I remember watching Rosie O'Donnell when she had her talk show and was referred to as "the queen of nice" and as I observed her oh-so-fake smile like a great white shark, I kept thinking, "how can people not see that she was obviously anything but nice" and, as her future behaviour demonstrated, she was as mean as a snake. Americans seem to have trouble reading non-verbal behaviour for some reason. I have never understood it but I find it a worrying trait.
