What if One Day We Get a Bad President?

The consequences of being saddled with a non-progressive, dumb chief executive are too horrible to imagine.

I believe I have noticed a problem with President Obama’s declaring that he can blow up Americans with drone strikes without due process.

Stick with me here; this is a bit of an esoteric argument. Now, like most people, I celebrate every time Obama obtains more power. Now he can do whatever he feels needs to be done for the country and not be burdened with getting the approval of his lessers first. So the more powerful the presidency, the better for us all. But I had a terrible thought: What if one day we get a bad president?

For instance, take this power to kill Americans with drones. No one worries that Obama will abuse such a power — I mean, we’re talking about a man who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize just for existing. It’s not like he’s ever going to use that power to blow us up (though, according to his lawyers, he legally could… and if he did, we’d just have to assume he had really, really good reasons). But just imagine if that power wound up in the hands of a president like George W. Bush. He’d probably blow up people with the drone all day, thinking he was playing a video game (“I’m gettin’ me a high score!”). Or worse yet, think of handing Dick Cheney that power. He’d most likely declare a unilateral war on kittens and puppies, blowing them up from the sky and then collecting the tears of children for some evil Halliburton project.

And the power to incinerate people isn’t the only power I fear could fall into the wrong hands. Like, what about the new authority the government has under President Obama to force people to buy things? That’s great for Obama to have, because he can force people to buy things they really do need to buy, like health care (and maybe in the future other things we all should really have, like hybrids or his memoirs). But think of what could happen if a president not as enlightened as Obama wielded such a power, backed by a Congress full of Republican troglodytes? They could make us all buy AR-15s or Big Gulps or Bibles or other dangerous, awful things.

Furthermore, there is Obama’s position on compromise. Now, we all agree that it’s absolutely ridiculous that Obama has to yield at all to those mindless Republican thugs who somehow hold a majority in Congress. Obama is a brilliant man, so why should he compromise to the ideals of those so far beneath him? That’s why he doesn’t ever yield and agree to spending cuts and just asks for more taxes on the rich. And if somehow taxing the rich more and more doesn’t make the math add up, then we’ll ignore the stupid math. I mean, that’s why we haven’t had a federal budget for years: Why in the world should what Obama can do be limited by some arbitrary squiggles called “numbers”? So Obama will absolutely not compromise with crazed right-wingers or math.

But think of what would happen if a bad president took such an attitude? He’d spend all his time making speeches, listing out promises that would never be fulfilled, while Congress would be locked in constant gridlock. What a pointless, worthless presidency that would be.

Also, the latitude we give Obama might become a problem if bad presidents come to expect it. Normally, if the unemployment rate hovered around 8% for a president’s entire term (and was only that low because millions of people had given up even looking for work) while at the same time we were burdened with high gas prices and economic growth ground to a halt, we would say that president was a complete and utter failure. Basically the worst president imaginable. We’d not only want that worthless wretch kicked out of office before he could do any more damage to our economy, we’d want him forced to wander the streets while citizens pelted him with rotten fruit and shouted obscenities at him.

In reference to gun control, I've asked liberals "If you didn't trust Bush & Cheney, why would you want them to be the only ones with guns?" They ignored that just as they ignore Obama's drones.

When the House was truly vexing Obama at one point last year, some moron on HuffPo actually suggested that Obama should just dissolve Congress. Hopefully, that was someone playing a joke on us, but this article (and his decision that the Senate was not, in fact, in session) point out that there are plenty of people who would think Obama dissolving Congress might be a good idea. It sends shivers down my spine.

Well, duh! The Emperor wants to crush the GOP before the 2014 elections so that he can have a compliant Congress. How else can he get the 22nd Amendment rescinded? Oh, and he will probably be wanting to go ahead with his new "civilian defense corps" which he said [circa 2008] he was going to organize. Perhaps that is where the billions of bullets DHS and others bought this year are going. I would bet that many of us would be candidates to be "pioneers" in his new gulag, too!

I have an idea: we could write some document limiting the power of government, and then have it approved by Congress and or the States...

We could call it "Constitution".

Indeed, what's this "what if" that Frank is talking about?

Frank - You are so correct. If we had a bad President, the results could be horrendous. Imagine if we had a President who sent out teams of government workers to convince people to sign up for food stamps, or one who gave away billions of taxpayer dollars to solar energy companies created by their campaign contributors designed to go bankrupt after fleecing the taxpayers? Oh, wait.

Okay, then imagine if we had a president who didn't insist that the auto company he bailed out build electric cars? Think of all the firefighters who would be out of a job.

Most importantly, if we weren't so lucky to have such a benevolent, brilliant man as President Obama leading the country, doctors would still be ripping tonsils out of healthy children and extremities off the rest of us, just for profit!

Worse yet, what if one day we get a president who has: a) no credentials whatsoever for the job; b) bases his approach to governing on Saul Alinsky's _Rules for Radicals_ (thank you, Mark Levin); c) cannot put two sentences together without a teleprompter; d) hates to work; e) was born with an entitlement mentality; f) appreciates the Office of the Presidency only for the Good Life it can afford; and (tho I could go on), g) would rather lie than tell the truth in nine out of ten cases -- lying is just so much easier, and it keeps the other side constantly guessing.

One suggestion, PJM. Lose the "Top Rated Comments" uh, sequestration. These are merely the people who happened to get in first.

I'm just saying.

I think it's weighted toward those who get in first, but I think it will eventually end up with the best comments bubbling to the top. (Of course, that one of my comments got up on this one made me smile, so maybe I am biased.)

EVERYONE in the room knows that the Emperor has no clothes; and the fact that only the rank and file citizens (for the most part) have dared to defy the orthodoxy of cowardly silence in the face of calculated character assassination will not absolve these Democrat and Republican members of the Ruling Class from their abysmal dereliction of duty.
They are, in the end, enabling a man who has openly declared his intent to “fundamentally transform” (read: bring to its knees!) the greatest nation on Earth…and now that he has stolen a second term (also completely unopposed by these same Ruling Elites from both parties), he may well succeed in fully dismantling both the Constitution and the once-greatest economy in all of history…while bemoaning that he has “more important ‘stuff ‘ to do” than concern himself with the “carnival barkers” (us) who demand that he do what every other citizen in the nation must do without hesitation (or legal recourse) …provide bona fide proof (not a forged digital image) of his U.S. citizenship.
Others may be willing to be silenced in the face of such unprecedented evil and deception; but make no mistake: millions of us are not. In the end, the truth (which everyone who wants to know already knows) will prevail…but not until we as a nation have suffered the prolonged consequences of our own willingness (and that of our hired “representatives”) to be silenced by the very people perpetrating this treasonous fraud which we continue to point out.
Of what use is the First Amendment if free men and women will willingly and shamelessly silence themselves simply because they lack the courage to speak the obvious truth?

Curiously, what may well be more detestable than the crime itself is that those who profess to be “Conservatives” (Republicans all), whom we have once again hired and will soon be paying to “represent us” have steadfastly refused to even mention – much less rise up and counter – the twin egregious crimes of defrauding the American People with respect to their Commander in Chief’s blatant Constitutional ineligibility and now the open perversion of the once-sacred electoral process.
So I ask you, fellow Conservatives: how long will we the People voluntarily submit to this abusive betrayal at the hands of those whom we perpetually hire and pay for the sole purposes of representing our interests and protecting our inalienable rights?

It's not that Rubio drinks water, it's that he doesn't drink the Kool-Aid.

I think that we should also look at what would happen if we had a bad media. If all the "news" was filtered through a Republican lens, they forged documents against a sitting leftist politician, photoshopped magazine covers of Democratic candidates, refused to ask a Republican a hard question, kept evidence damaging to Republicans hostage, ...our information stream would be so damaged, only Republicans could get elected.

We don't need a free press under a saint like Obama, but we might if someone else wanted to run guns to drug dealers or commit massive voting fraud with friends at ACORN.

An objective free press holding leaders accountable isn't necessary when you can trust the self-policing state. That's certainly a relief at the moment.
