What Do Hispanics — and All Voters — Want? Survey Says …

Hispanics will play an increasing role in determining the outcome of future elections. But which issues provide the most common ground for the GOP to make inroads? (Don't miss PJTV's Border Disorder: Has Obsession with Illegal Immigration Alienated Hispanic Voters from the GOP?)

A lot has been written about the changing composition of our country’s electorate. According to Census estimates, Hispanics make up 13% of the voting age population — but the younger generation is coming right behind, and among that under 18 age cohort Hispanics represent 22% of the population. There’s no doubt about it — the electorate will look different in the coming years and Hispanics will play a greater role in determining the outcome of our elections.

This is a looming issue for the Republican Party. In the last three presidential elections, Hispanics have consistently chosen the Democratic candidate. They chose Vice President Gore over Governor George W. Bush in 2000 by 27 points and President Obama over Senator McCain by 36 points in 2008. President Bush managed to curry some favor among the Hispanic community during his first term in office and narrowed the gap, but he still lost their vote by nine points to Senator Kerry in 2004.

However, a recent survey* conducted by The Tarrance Group on behalf of Resurgent Republic offers some insights into areas where Republicans may be able to improve relations with Hispanic voters and garner their support for this year’s elections and beyond. But, make no mistake — this is a steep climb when you consider that a majority (51%) of these Hispanic voters consider themselves to be Democrats, while only 18% call themselves Republicans and 30% say they are Independent.

Additionally, by a margin of two-to-one, Hispanic voters say the Democratic Party is better able to handle the problem they are most concerned about (50%) than the Republican Party (25%).  In an open-end question, 51% of Hispanic voters tell us that problem they are most concerned about is the economy and unemployment.

  1. In the midst of all the barkin’ an’ bellowin’ of Rio Limbaugh, Dr. Bones, an oasis of quiet!

Most of Hoovervile is scarcely livable nowadays, sir, with Destructive Creationism (Pat. Pend.) smashin’ up whatever the Crawford Crashers missed before 20 January 2009 — makin’ their old neo-rubble bounce, at any rate. But not on THIS street!!

Here, the e-slummer with jangled nervers may even, most astonishin’ly, find a brief respite from Hyperzionistical self-agitprop! Believe it or not, Dr. Bones, there is not a single word in this piece about how the … how the ‘Spaniards’ — so let us call them, for the sake of _el ihtiyát_ [1] — are to help make B. de Nétanyahou et Cie. the neosuccess to end all neosuccesses!!!

Indeed, one can scarcely help wondering, Who, amongst the neocomrades, can have ordered THIS?

For that matter, what on G*re’s green earth, is it, exactly?

Do you have any idea, Dr. Bones– for I have none at all — whether alexbrattiies grow on trees? Are they dug up from mines in remote authoritarian states of Kirkpatrician failure? Do alexbrattiies laze in mangrove swamps waitin’ to be netted or shot by the Safari Set? Are they fetched from the depths of the sea, or from its shallows? Do they fall from the sky at long intervals like meteoroids and lead balloons?

Naturally the easy guess is that they are spawned and hatched and bred in Party-’n’-Ideology wombschools, yet, never having encountered one before, I must allow that to be no better than speculation.

    (…) What’s that, sir? (…) “Didn’t I read the label on the product? ” ?

Yes, of course, I did, but it meant nothing to me: “a partner with Public Opinion Strategies, a national corporate and public affairs survey research firm”? That might as well be “runcible spooon,” or “thiamine mononitrate” like on my can of Chef Boyardee drain cleaner. Anyway, the neolocals of this part of the fever swamps all swear by _caveat emptor_–though not, to be sure, in Latin–and their labels are accordin’ly worthless at best, and maybe even deliberately neodeceptive, a bold stroke against the insolence of label-crazed regulators at worst.

I like your other mumble better, sir. “Alexbratty” does sound vaguely Pseltic, does it not? It need not be a St. Paddy’s joke, though, since the precise flavour of Pseltic psoul it reeks of is Caledonian rather than my own tipple. (One can stick an O’ or a Mac- in front of pretty well anything, after all, and achieve an instantaneous and unmistakable effect. Even the language arts straighteners at Wombschool Normal U. can hardly have hushed that trick up.)

Do you suppose alexbratties can mate with adamsmiths? Perhaps even with nonsterile offsping?

That, by the way, is more or less where I was headed before you distracted me, sir. Maybe I exaggerrated my _aporia_ just a smidgen, since there is one faint streak of ghastly light amidst the encirclin’ dumb, namely,”Further questioning also produces a consistent majority preference for less spending.”

That has so little to do with the little laddie’s announced topic of . . . ‘Spaniards,’ and the self-narcissism in this neck of the swamp runs so deep, that I betcha ten-to one that, whatever it may be, it was talkin’ ’bout its ownneoself when it said that. So perhaps we can make do with a provisional and functional definition: “The ALEXBRATTY is an appliance for the enforcement or reinforcement of FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY (_q.v._).” I think that may do, Dr. Bones, unless perhaps you consider that ‘appliance’ suggests too strongly that the neospecimen is basically mineral rather than vegetable or animal, a point we would not want to specify when we don’t know it ourselves. Anyway, let’s run with that and see who wants to tackle us, shall we?

Actually, one we have classified alexbratties as appliances, they and their ‘true’ ‘nature’, should they possess any, cease to be of central interest. What the serious student demands to know first is this: WHOSE HAND is it that wields the mysterious alexbratty?

And this, in a general sort of way, we know already. Names of individual Party-’n’-Ideology Paymasters matter little, and moreover, mentionin’ Uncle Scrooge and Daddy Warbucks always sounds a bit like family gossip in any case, so let us circumspectly suppose this alexbratty to be at the disposal of the Concord Coalition — taking the CC generically rather than specifically. Not just all the present conspirators, but the whole broader class from which actual CC dupes and potential CC marks are drawn. ’Nuff said. I hope.

There is no difficulty explaining why an alexbratty stands out like a sore thumb here in Padschamastán. It’s your “jewel in the head of the toad,” so to speak, or your “silk purse with pearls found in the hog sty.” Wally Wingnut and Cindy from Wasilla have no more use for an alexbratty than for a BGM-109 [http://tinyurl.com/8popc] .

Up the slippery slope at Castle Podhóretz, I guess the neogentry have (mostly) not (yet) degenerated to the point of bein’ unable to grasp the _Gesamtgestaltbegriff_ of Fiscal Responsibility, but it scarcely matters: gentry bein’ gentry even when self-neotericised, they leave that sort of thing to the servants. Smacks of Trade, it does! Rather like the Muscovite uppers just before serfdom was abolished are the Baní Podhóretz, if you ask *me*, Dr. Bones! That, however, is another _narración_ for another _tertulia_. Besides, you didn’t in fact ask.

Naturally I betcha we won’t be seeing many more alexbratties around here. “[S]ellin’ watermelons at the side of the road” &c. &c. [2]

But, even more naturally, the sixty-four-NIS question must, for us at the moment, be where the announced topic, the Little Friends of Sam Huntin’ton, comes in. [3] As far as I know, they have never been accused of Caledonianity, _avaritia mutilans_, except possibly if they hail ultimately from Galicia. Very few wingnutettes and wingnuts of our holy Homeland™ could point to the right Galicia on a modern map, neither on theone hand gettin’ confused by vague recollections from Sabbath school about the voyages of Sh’ûl dba “St. Paul,” nor, on the other hand, succumbin’ to blank ignorance altogether. And Father Zeus knows best about all the Galicias!

Meanwhile, back in the fever swamps, the closest our appliance ever comes to connectin’ its own mystery dots is this: “[A] majority (54%) of Hispanic voters say spending less to reduce the deficit should be a higher priority for the federal government right now than spending more to help the economy (38%).”

Not very formidable, is it, Dr. Bones? A slim majority of the ‘Spaniard’ demographic, a category of citiz…, of persons who know nothing worth mentioning about economics, not even about _Chicagonomics for Dummies_ and the plot of _Atlas Shrugged_, think that Neocomrade Dr. H. Hoover got it more or less right in the 1930’s. Not that they are prepared to recite about Herbert and Franklin either.

If *that* surprises you, sir, I hope you never find out how St. Charles of Darwin does _chez Rasmussen_. You might perish of cardiac arrest, or brain fever, or _sæva indignatio_ on the spot.

But wait! There’s more: from the way the alexbeatty conducts its scribble, one can only conclude that the fifty-four percent must believe in their (rather exiguous, surely?) Concord Coalitionalism at least as zealously as Governor Winthrop (_obit anno religionismi_ 1060 / 1650 / 5459 ) used to believe in _Orthodoxy in Massachusetts_. [http://tinyurl.com/yzcesx2] For that one little scrap of false analogy, and it alone, is to make the ‘Spaniards’ dupes of the militant extremist Republican Party _in sæcula sæculorum amen_.

Well, we shall see. Myself, I’m reminded of the shaggy duke story about Wellington, the one with the punch line “If you believe *that*, sir, you would believe anything.” [4] But we will see.

    And I wish you, sir,
    Healthy days.

Looks like you had yourself a GOOD ol’ time this mornin’! A word to the wise: You need to lay off the double grande double espresso breakfasts! They lead to altered mental states wherein massive brain dumps like the one above can happen spontaneously.

On the plus side, now that all the voices in your head have had their say, things should be quieter for you for the next few days!

  3. 3. JBH

BINGO! bubblehead, you hit the nail right on the head.

Can the author define what is meant by the word “Hispanic”? How many generations removed from the original immigrants does a person remain “Hispanic”?

Is a person “Hispanic” if only one of their grandparents came from a spanish speaking country, their last name is Jones and they themselves speak Spanish?

  5. 5. FVazquez

    Dear JHM,
I think i get it, ” Polls don’t lie but liars use polls”?

  6. 6. Carpenter

“…In the last three presidential elections, Hispanics
have consistently chosen the Democratic candidate….”

    gee I wonder why?
Could it be that the so-called christian Republican party seems
HOSTILE to Mexicans? Or is that just my imagination?

To win again all the Leftist Media has to do is FOCUS (like a laser beam) onto a few (1000) deranged hardcore Right-ist Extremos and Obama will win re-election and then it will be Hillary’s turn to *#@!^ us.

I think we need to distance ourselves from the hardcore overly visible overly loud mouthed MINORITY of anti-immigration extremists! Not because they are wrong!! Its just that they have become the TOOL of the Leftist Media. In a way they are thier own worst enemy.

  7. 7. Delia

    6. Carpenter,

“I think we need to distance ourselves from the hardcore overly visible overly loud mouthed MINORITY of anti-immigration extremists! Not because they are wrong!!”

Who’s against LEGAL immigration here, Carpenter? Please, name names.

  8. 8. Phranc

We will get nowhere as a country until we all identify ourselves as Americans first. Use to be a time when we were a melting pot.

  9. 9. Delia

    8. Phranc:

“We will get nowhere as a country until we all identify ourselves as Americans first. Use to be a time when we were a melting pot.”

Exactly right. Our country is now a set of ‘communities’ based on race? Look how far we’ve come? -And, where are the ‘whitey’ polls? Can you just imagine the outrage?

  10. 10. Morton Doodslag

The elephant in the room for me is the fact that as millions of Hispanic criminals storm our borders, the racist “Hispanic Caucus” has effectively purged anyone who might not go along with the shifting demographic trend. A major reason Hispanics are slated to shift the traditional racial makeup of America is not solely through their aggressive third-world birth rate, though that is significant, but also because projections ASSUME that the illegal tsunami will continue, abetted most by those same swelling ranks of illegals who rely on the Latino component in Congress and the Senate to push for lax enforcement of laws, or the overturning of laws protecting our border.

Of course, pointing out FACTS will make opponents call me “racist”, when they are axiomatically the racists. There is only one way that swelling ranks of uneducated Hispanics will vote in the future, and that’s going to be for hard Left traitors who are determined one way or the other to exterminate the social fabric of America. The “Hispanic Caucus” blatantly now opposes all legislation which threatens to clamps down on the illegal tsunami because that tsunami is a force which they intend to harness to produce more of the same.

I was referring to the Extremists you see on TV that the LEFTIST
MEDIA uses to smear everyone in the Republican Party. PERIOD!

And I am not trying to single anyone or any group out. But they
need to tone it down or be prepared to live under democratic
communism. Am I blaming them for McCain’s lose? NO! Am I blaming
them for chasing the Hispanics away? Well if the shoe fits!!!

The Republican Party is DOOMED without the Hispanic Vote.
This country is DOOMED without the Hispanic Vote.
Without the Hispanic Vote we all LOSE!!

If the Hispanics don’t come back to the GOP soon we might as well
start looking for another country to live in. And Mexico might be
    our only option.

So it’s 1) put up with the illegal situation (for now) or
    2) it’s four more of Obama, and then 8 years of Hillary (or
worse). And if that happens none of this will even matter.

    Delia:

I want to choose the Right side, but people like 10. choose my side for me.

  13. 13. Morton Doodslag

“I want to choose the Right side, but people like 10. choose my side for me.”

Pretty much sums it up. As soon as the Left used the dagger of identity politics to divide and conquer, America as a sovereign nation populated by Free People became doomed. #12 and all like him/her will place identity politics above the fate of this nation, and that means this nation will balkanize and become like all the other seething cesspits of tribal hatred on the planet. Strangely, they prefer to ally themselves with the people who caused this catastrophe with their lies and bromides over the people who are warning about it, and want to change it.

  14. 14. Delia

    11. Carpenter,

The ‘La Raza [The Race]‘ sector of “Hispanics” will never be swayed by the Right. The Americans of Spanish/Mexican/Latin/Etc. ethnicity who support border control, are against socialism and the welfare state as well as taming big government are probably already Pubs. Do we give up all of our conservative principles to ‘con’ for the the ‘Hispanic’ vote like the Dems do?

    12. urbanleftbehind,

If you let people ‘choose’ for you, then no soup for you!

  15. 15. ricpic

It is deeply dishonest to equate what hispanics want with what “all” voters want. Non-hispanic whites overwhelmingly want a crackdown on illegal aliens and a much much smaller number of legal immigrants. Hispanics overwhelmingly want the opposite.

  16. 16. Carpenter

The fact is that ‘they’ are here. And ‘they’ are here to stay.
And no one, including the next Republican president (if we every
have one again) will make them leave. You should have figured
that out already. Even if Micheal Savage is elected President
noting will change. So get used to it.

Another fact is that millions of illegals OWN or are buying homes
and the US Government will never take away their land. PERIOD! It
    will never happen.

The solution is to find an ‘ELECTABLE’ Conservative President,
replace Obama and then work toward a Conservative Congress and
    then start fixing the problems.

And years from now, once this is all over, ‘they’ will either be
good Republicans or bad Democrats. The choice is yours.

  17. 17. Trumpeldor

I would like to add a caveat for this interesting article
Latinos families usually have traditional values which are more shared by Republicans than liberals…
In my humble view, this voting gap might be filled.
It will depend heavily on the personality and behavior of the next GP candidate

  18. 18. Delia

If the only way the Pubs can win is to learn Español then America has already screwed the pooch.

  19. 19. Carpenter

    Trumpeldor:
“…Latinos families usually have traditional values which are
    more shared by Republicans..”

Yes that is true. Another truth is that Hispanics make up 13%
of the voters TODAY! In just a few years they will represent 22%
of the voting public. To alienate them is suicide.

The fact of the matter is there are more Latino voters than
there are Micheal “the Savage” Weenier voters who seem to hate
them. We literally are not being given much of a choice. Its go
with the ’3% Savages’ or the ’13-22% Hispanics’. You do the math!

    And another thing…
if the GOP is to become a ARM of the Savage Nation, Stormfront,
or whatever then I will never vote again. I cannot and will not
    align myself with that crowd.

  20. 20. shoey

    No Amnesty!

no matter what you squishy Repubs would like, there will be no amnesty!

  21. 21. shoey

the GOP is bleeding white male voters (still the largest single voting-bloc) because of this issue and others that the Leadership refuse to take a firm stand on, McCain lost! and he lost in large part due to his stance on illegal immigration.

let me be clear, McCain Lost!

and any canidate like McCain (progressive RINO) will also lose!

  22. 22. urbanleftbehind

Savage would be a target of Stormfront too – he just needs the right “Tom Willis” moment. Guess the sitcom and the particular episode I’m referring to. Here’s a hint: recent Lou Dobbs contritions.

  23. 23. Delia

Carpenter, how are Hispanics being alienated by the conservatives? Because we don’t want to give out amnesty to illegals and protect our borders? Our country has enough to handle with the legal influx of immigrants.

ALL IMMIGRATION: AN UNWORKABLE PONSI SCHEME BY US CONGRESS

My father-in-law was a die hard Catholic Democrat to his death and never got it into his knucklehead that the Dems did squat for him. He was anti-abortion and owned his own construction business and was a freakin’ DEMOCRAT UNTIL DEATH.

Some people ya just can’t ‘change’ or ‘cater’ to.

    *shrug*

  24. 24. Minda

if Hispanics are alienated, that is further evidence of the fact that everyone is only concerned with their own race and increasing their own numbers. They want more of themselves and don’t care about consequences of illegal immigration, the effect on the economy and entitlements, the damage to the cohesiveness of the nation. They figure they will be cohesive with each other. It is ironic that the only people to ever to any degree whatsoever to resist this viewpoint are the ones called white people. That is why such levels of immigration are allowed not just here, and in Europe where they deliberately invited non western immigrants to come before they needed them for the labor. Not that that even matters. Japan has an aging population, but catch them importing immigrants by the millions. The west did it for the sale of liberal ideology.

If Hispanics decide to become white (I am sorry to put it so crudely but this is what it comes to) some will be for the GOP and some for the other side. Some will be independent and many will switch back and forth. Or they could become like Asians, that would work. The best thing is for them to just become regular folks, go in for the free enterprise system, and Americanism. If they decide to join african americans on the grievance side of the aisle, the country is sunk. I mean sunk. It won’t survive as a whole nation. A majority of the population, brown and black, will be using the ballot box to continually vote themselves things for free. The things will be taken from the minority, white, until the money runs out. It will eventually turn into Mexico and Brazil with the economies and the social situation like those nations because people carry their cultures within them. That will be very bad for african americans.

The prescription that anyone go out of their way to do something for immigrants is wrong. The more you do for people, the more they expect, and the more they are aggrieved when everything is not made just as they wish it. You gave me this much, give me more, give me everything is the idea. Just imagine when the Irish and Polish were coming to Ellis Island, if they had been told, you deserve this entitlement and that. You don’t have to adjust, the nation should adjust to you. You don’t have to become American. You just got here, but you are a victim of the evil US. In 2010, they would still be living in tenements complaining that they were being discriminated against, that they have no choice but to become criminals, and that they can’t learn in school until presented with optimum conditions.
I don’t mean to sound mean or harsh. I’m trying to be realistic which is really difficult on a personal level and almost impossible in public.

  25. 25. Carpenter

The Hispanic Vote is 13% of the total. Without them we are screwed! It literally means the end of the Republican Party for a few decades, or more, maybe forever. Do you get it yet?

In the next 10 years the Hispanic vote total will double in many areas because of those who are turning 18. That means THEY WILL HAVE COMPLETE and total control over who wins the next few national elections. Do you get it yet?

If the Hispanic vote doesn’t come back (what little we actually got in the past) then we will never see a Republican President again in our lifetimes. Do you get it yet?

Obama could easily win a re-election just on this one issue!!

And you people are still crying about NON-EXISTENT Amnesty plans while everything goes down the drain…….

  26. 26. john from cinncinatti

it is extremely funny to me that the white people are crying about the loss of their lifestyles. maybe when the HIZZPANICS come into their own they will put the whites on reservations too. what is another way to say Hispanic? oh no, not another white guy! Spanish is another European language…

  27. 27. Delia

The Hispanics have a Republican website:

What do you suggest, Carpenter to ‘win’ Hispanic voters besides ignoring amnesty and illegals?

  28. 28. Delia

No, 27. john from cinncinatti, we are all AFRICANS (just different shades of melanin). Which means we’ve all tribally warred, shed blood, traveled great distances and conquered lands, bro. He who is without sin… ;)

Who cares? Conservatives should enact legislation based on the soundness of its merits alone and what’s best for the majoroty of Americans. Not whether it appeals to racial groups. If that idea doesn’t appeal to hispanics than too bad. The good news for us is that it will appeal to a majority of Americans regardless of race. Ethno-centric race advocacy groups are out-dated and no longer serve a purpose now that we’ve left the 1950s.Conservatives need to stick to their princibles of smaller government, lower taxes, strong national security, self-reliance, pride in country, economic growth and faith in democracy and the U.S. Constitution. Leave race mongering to the left where it belongs.

According to Delia #19, If the only way the Pubs can win is to learn Español then America has already screwed the pooch.

It’s entirely possible that we have. Quite a bipartisan achievement for our political class, given that ten years ago another American Century was in the cards.

But, if I live long enough to witness this nation in ruins, I don’t want to look back and admit I did nothing. I don’t want to look back and admit I stood silent.

In the 1970s it also seemed that we had screwed the pooch, yet here we are.

The message that needs transmission to all voters is that the ruling class–”compassionate conservatives” spit and Howard Zinn leftists alike–is using immigrants and the poor to disempower the middle classes. When minority citizens come close to the American Dream, they too will be targeted and undermined.

  37. 37. vivo

Segregating Hispanics for political purposes is as idiotic as segregating Italians, Irish, Germans, Polish, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Africans, Arabs, Brazilians, British, or Martians.

  38. 38. whyyeseyec

Sorry #6. You lose! Republicans have not been `hostile` to Hispanics or anyone else. If Hispanics are consistently voting democrap then they are only looking for handouts and what the dems will give them. America is not about getting something for nothing. America is about working and paying your own way. If you want freebies go live in Europe with all the bellyachers and underachievers….

  39. 39. Will

The issue is if Hispanic’s want to be American’s,or do they want to come here and live on welfare, demanding rights when it hasn’t been earned .

  40. 40. Ole Sarge

I find the R’s rather amusing, but not in a positive way, more like a bunch of idiots. They feel it is their job to appeal to this group or that group. The dims don’t view things in that manner they are just dims and others jump on their marxist band wagon because that is what they believe in.

The R’s on the other hand can’t settle for being Conservative, which has a lot of appeal if an R is a true Conservative like Sarah, Michele, Rubio and so on. On the other hand, if they are moderates/rino’s they actually appeal to no one so in the interest of being somebody they go through all sorts of gyrations in an effort to appeal to this group or that group. Steele is into appealing to the hip hop generation, please, give me a break.
