The people of Tornado Alley know what's important. They build small tornado shelters to protect people from the rare storm instead of trying to make their entire house into a fortress to protect their stuff. Watch out for a man-caused disaster in the form of big government regulations that raise the cost of cleanup and rebuilding. I've heard ignorant Northeastern talking heads asking why these people don't have basements, not understanding that a basement is both very expensive and provides insufficient protection from falling debris. These extreme winds don't just tear apart homes like Hurricane winds, they break the boards into smaller pieces and throw dense objects like chunks of steel and concrete through the air. Everything becomes broken deadly projectiles and the resulting debris is full of sharp objects that can cause injury. People in the path of the massive tornado have to clear everything down to bare dirt and start over. Other people just a short walk outside the path of destruction count their blessings and provide what help they can. It's a very humbling experience.
