This is what they did — these climate “scientists” on whose unsupported word the world’s classe politique proposes to set up an unelected global government this December in Copenhagen, with vast and unprecedented powers to control all formerly free markets, to tax wealthy nations and all of their financial transactions, to regulate the economic and environmental affairs of all nations, and to confiscate and extinguish all patent and intellectual property rights.
The tiny, close-knit clique of climate scientists who invented and now drive the “global warming” fraud — for fraud is what we now know it to be — tampered with temperature data so assiduously that, on the recent admission of one of them, land temperatures since 1980 have risen twice as fast as ocean temperatures. One of the thousands of emails recently circulated by a whistleblower at the University of East Anglia, where one of the world’s four global-temperature datasets is compiled, reveals that data were altered so as to prevent a recent decline in temperature from showing in the record. In fact, there has been no statistically significant “global warming” for 15 years — and there has been rapid and significant cooling for nine years.
Worse, these arrogant fraudsters — for fraudsters are what we now know them to be — have refused, for years and years and years, to reveal their data and their computer program listings. Now we know why: As a revealing 15,000-line document from the computer division at the Climate Research Unit shows, the programs and data are a hopeless, tangled mess. In effect, the global temperature trends have simply been made up. Unfortunately, the British researchers have been acting closely in league with their U.S. counterparts who compile the other terrestrial temperature dataset — the GISS/NCDC dataset. That dataset too contains numerous biases intended artificially to inflate the natural warming of the 20th century.
Finally, these huckstering snake-oil salesmen and “global warming” profiteers — for that is what they are — have written to each other encouraging the destruction of data that had been lawfully requested under the Freedom of Information Act in the UK by scientists who wanted to check whether their global temperature record had been properly compiled. And that procurement of data destruction, as they are about to find out to their cost, is a criminal offense. They are not merely bad scientists — they are crooks. And crooks who have perpetrated their crimes at the expense of British and U.S. taxpayers.

Some of the guys in these emails work in my own state. I have reported them to the Attorney General and the heads of the eduction committees in the state House and Senate, as well as the Board of Regents.
I encourage everyone else to do likewise, and to support the non-profit institutions that are about to take the legal fight to them in a most personal and painful way.
Let’s crush them with FOIA requests and aggressive lawfare, exposing the connections to the Gore/Soros one-worlder octopus. There is a LOT of money to be made in qui tam actions here, but the satisfaction of disgracing the likes of Al Gore would be even sweeter.

Lord Monckton’s comment on the datasets themselves makes me even madder than I already was. I didn’t realize the underlying datasets themselves had been hidden from public review for decades. If the kind of scientific fraud that Monckton alleges has been perpetrated on the datasets then every scientist at CRU should be banned from publishing and lose tenure. I have already read that the underlying raw dataset has been claimed to have been lost at CRU–only the “adjusted” data is available. Clearly the frauds at CRU are not above destroying data (which is theft from the public, since the public paid for assembling those datasets) in order to protect their AGW scam.

When I was in school, starting with the desired result and working backwards to the data was called “dry labbing.” It was considered cheating if a student did it. It should cause for discipline when scientists
do it as well. But the scientific nomenklatura seem to be more or less immune.
There is a simple way to avoid such events in the future: require raw data to be made publicly available else conclusions based on the non-public data will be discounted without substantive review. This is how science always was. It is what real science can only be.
These frauds attempted to, and did, purposefully corrupt the peer review process. Any scientific journal should require public access to underlying data as a prerequisite to publishing an author’s work, else that journal should lose any public grant monies or even tax/non-profit advantaged mailing rates. This is enforcing science; anything less is political posturing behind a faux-science veneer.

Is it normal for reputable scientists to hide data and test models/methods? That seems counter to the scientific method to me though I’m not a scientist. If this is not normal, why is it tolerated? I would think every decent scientist on the planet would be ready to ostracize this group to protect their own credibility if nothing else.

The Copenhagen Climate Summit this December is going to give an entirely new meaning to the expression “something is rotten in Denmark”.
I also suspect that these East Anglia Univ. CRU revelations are only the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended)that already reaches into the US via Michael Mann at Penn State Univ (and who knows how many others at other “first rate” institutions?). We all need to keep pounding this story and not let the dishonest MSM bury it (as they are attempting to do). This is far bigger than Rathergate where one dirtbag attempted to subvert an election in one country. This is a group of unknown size within the scientific community trying to defraud the entire globe.
What is really needed is for a well funded group of honest scientists to start over again with honest data. I suspect this would be more efficient than trying to fix the corrupted data that has been so often published. By the way, it is a disgrace that reputable journals (Science, Nature, PNAS) published papers in which raw data and methods of analysis were hidden from critics. The editors who did this (assuming it was done) should be fired forthwith, and the peer reviewers who allowed it never be allowed to review another paper.

It appears as if certain genes have become more widespread today than they were in the past. Some of these effect the size of the brain, although other effects have not yet been studied.
A possibility is that the ability to look at an issue with objectivity relatively recently became widespread enough in the human population to effect societies. In other words when the enlightenment came about it wasn’t that suddenly somebody thought it up, but that enough people were in power who had the ability to recognize and appreciate it that it became the accepted way of viewing the world. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, where it flowered and then died, the numbers of “gene-moderns” in the renaisance were enough to keep it alive.
But with Gulf War Syndrome, Sick Building Syndrome, Global Warming, “Silent Spring,” and Silicone Gel Implants with their “autonomic immunodeficiency syndromes,” (none of which have a basis in solid science), the emotional, visceral–even spiritual–club has come to dominate. Journalism schools now teach “story telling for social good” as a journalist’s true calling.
University journalism departments have been taken over by those who can parrot the mantras. “I feel your pain” has replaced statistics, science and open-minds as the ultimate victory of those lacking the objectivity genes.
These people have no way of understanding the destructiveness of what they do because their brains are simply not designed for it.
Nothing can be done to change this. At times I think the only recourse is for those who “get it” to break away and start a new society that recognizes the values of the Enlightenment, the scientific method, and objectivity.

I have learned much from your work and I have the greatest respect for you because of it. You demonstrated that even if their data were not fraudulent, their science, such as it was, overstated any effect of CO2. Most impressive was your chart showing forecasts of temperatures beginning 1998 (or thereabouts) going steadily up, while actual temperatures went steadily down, and all while CO2 was steadily increasing.(Somehow that massive contradiction to their speculation never bothered them.) But now we know that neither their data nor they are trustworthy. For this fraud, the US faces the possibility of Cap and Trade and other nonsense. Bravo Lord Monckton for everything you have said and done, and I share your anger.
PS – I’m an economist and I have never been bashful to admit that God created economists to make weather forecasts look good. Obviously, He created climatologists to make economist look good and trustworthy.

A civil suit can be brought by granting organizations, by donors to those granting organizations, and as a class – the small donors to those granting organizations. The Hadley center, the scientists, the board of directors, the board of directors of the granting organizations, and perhaps – the scientific publications – can all be held liable. By filing suit, and doing the discovery process, more documents and relationships can be found.
A good lawyer could make some money off this – and set the precedent for scientific responsibility.

Re: #35, One thing that is clear from reading the emails is that climate journals use open refereeing instead of blind refereeing. That is, the reviewers know who the authors are. The scientific nomenklatura hate blind refereeing because they are “important” and feel that they should not be held to the same standards of scrutiny as an “ordinary” scientist.
Another questionable practice is journal editors selecting reviewers from the authors of the references contained in the submitted paper. This is another method that authors can use to “steer” their papers to “understanding” reviewers. In the worst case, it is a way of bypassing blind refereeing completely.
I’m upset by what seems to have been going on in the CRU too. It does look like important principles of scientific research were violated. That said, there is a lot of hyperventilating going on here and an unseemly rush to punish the scientists. If the scientists are “criminals”, exactly what crime have they committed? What law have they broken? If the scientists are “profiteers”, show me who has gotten rich (don’t tell me Al Gore; he’s not a scientist).
People seem awfully eager to amend the way science is done, imposing government penalties on journals that don’t obey the scientific process etc. That is a profoundly non-conservative approach. A few scientists do bad things, so we have to rip up the way all of science has been done for centuries and impose new government controls? Yeah, that’s going to work out great, just like all government controls do.
The problem here isn’t science. It’s the way that scientific publications are being exploited to drive policy. It takes years for scientific knowledge to really be trustworthy. Sometimes a whole generation. The scientific community is self-correcting, and I’m sure the CRU scientists are going to pay a penalty. The real fix is not relying so much on recent published results from a small scientific community that has relatively little oversight.
Most scientists are smart, hard-working and deeply committed to the truth. Don’t hamstring all of science because politicians are misusing it.

I’m with you on the need for a formal investigation here, but you’ve misstated the “hide the decline” matter. They were not trying to hide the recent temperature decline, but a decline in their tree ring proxy. It would be best if you make sure you have it down right if you are going to put your reputation on the line.

As someone who briefly studied physics at a reputable university, I am genuinely surprised that anyone could take the claims of these scientists (I will do them the undeserved honor of not using quotes) seriously WITHOUT the disclosure of the data sets in question.
Making unsupported claims without reproducible evidence to back it up isn’t science. It’s rhetoric. We will confuse the two at our peril.

From my understanding the tree ring thing was a separate issue. There is a series of emails in which two of the researchers discuss how to hide the current cooling trend also; one of them uses an “add the temperature” trick that he credits to one of his colleagues. All of this is for another of the endless “hockey stick” graphs we’ve been bombarded with for the last decade or so. They screwed up both sets of data to support their political agenda.

I’ve managed to compare matched urban and rural site data (each within 100 km of each other) with 111 years of data. Urban sites are warming but rural sites are not! It is as if you are measuring the temperature in a forest but you have the thermometer next to the bonfire. All the forecasts use the urban site data along with the rural site data and it is therefore shifted to the warming trend seen in the cities.

Meawhile … @ #50: Because the data have been fudged, or lost or destroyed, we cannot say with any certainty what is going on with regard to global warming. When we make a scientific hypothesis, we need to test that hypothesis with data. If there are no data, or the data are untrustworthy, the hypothesis becomes untestable, and we cannot conclude anything about the hypothesis. So, we really cannot conclude that there has been global warming.
Finally, no one here should assume that just because many scientists “agree” with AGW that that settles the issue. It doesn’t. Just look at the history of science. Many scientists agreed with Aristotles’s hypothesis of an eternal universe; many agreed with the Ptolemaic epicycles; many agreed that the universe circled the earth; many agreed with the theory of phlogiston; and many agreed that there was an ether surrounding light. All those many who were in agreement were wrong. Ultimately, science is not a popularity contest. It must be subject to vigorous testing and retesting and retesting until the hypothesis being put forward cannot be rejected. AGW simply does not cut the mustard in that regard.
Those Americans that participated in the AGW swindle need to lawyer up and practice their perp walk.

The FOIA request involved was denied on Nov 13th. Plus, the list of e-mails has no personal letters mentioning birthdays or office New Year’s parties and the file is just to big to have been gone through in a few days to weed them out. What is theorized is that this was a FOIA request file being complied inside the CRU in case they lost the case. They incompetently stored this file on their open server. The “hacker” simply came along and downloaded their open file from their open server. As confirmation it’s noted that the open server at CRU was taken down. Why do that if your organization’s internal server was hacked? It’s all their own fault for being all-around incompetents.
I am also angry at the Oil companies paying off shlocks to look under every stone to find any little tidbit to go against climatology science because it will cut into profits.

What struck me as an important question having read this is: who owns realclimate.org? Can it be relied on for any degree of objectivity? It is, after all, held up by the AGW supporting community as a bastion of solid, politics-free climate science. The results of a quick search staggered me, to say the least. Sorry, Christopher, but you’ve missed the point on this one (though it’s equally damning for CRU). As Climate Audit and others have documented, this “hide the decline” refers to the embarrassing detail that the 18 trees on one hillside that remarkably document all of global climate for 1000 years suddenly start (by their method) showing a decline in “temperature” since 1960 or so. Since it’s kind of awkward to have a temperature proxy going in the opposite direction to observed temperature, they did what all corrupt unscupulous climate scientologists would do and simply truncated the data sequence where it stopping looking right. This is the “trick” that Dr Jones seems to find no ethical or scientific issue with – which speaks volumes for him and his colleagues.
The issue of the last 10 years is covered in another mail where one says it’s a “travesty” that they can’t explain the lack of warming. So much for the “science is settled” lie…
The media is culpable of the fraud too. For many years it has been shaking down corporations and been getting paid off in advertising dollars.
The other night I watched the last twenty five minutes of Olbermann, the man whose panties are in a permanent state of wad. There were four commercial interruptions with seventeen commercials. The University of East Anglia and Phil Jones, the very people this article you are commenting on is under fire for distorting and misrepresenting data.
This is a case where any data acquired or relied upon for papers must be treated as suspect while there is now doubts on both the accuracy and unbased nature of the data.
If you want a very to the point and unbiased look at the raw temperature data collected by land thermometers, I suggest visiting this site – http://chiefio.wordpress.com/ . E.M. Smith not only shows where data is good or bad, but all of the explanations and data is made available so that you can see for yourself if there are any issues.
In further reference to the site originally linked (scepticalscience), graphs showing ocean heat content stop in 2004 – even though the page has articles dating as recently as 20-11-09.
How on earth can you refute the argument that “there has been no statistical warming since 1998″ when they concentrate on a period of only 6 years (in and of itself too small to show any trend). The reason it stops showing data for after 2004 is that the data for ocean heat content has ALSO now dropped meaning the argument would be invalid – and yet they still link to recent articles and claiming to “refute” them.
This is the problem with the current release of these documents. Contrary to popular belief, the evidence and data for AGW (and that does NOT include whether the Earth has warmed or not, or ocean levels, or acidification, or weather events, or droughts, flooding etc etc – AGW is ONLY the theory that C02 drives Temperature) comes primarily from a very select few of researches and the most prominent are those that are listed in these documents as avoiding FOIA requests, deleting or hiding data, and preventing any opinion other than their own being heard.
Exactly how can you automatically trust these people? After what was seen in these documents, I am voting for an investigation into what appears to be criminal behaviour and if they have done what these documents suggest they have, AGW is going to be standing on a leg made of cards.

You ask whether the conspiracy runs through all the institutions you mentioned? My point of view is, innocent until proven guilty, so I will have to assume it does not. However, if those institutions are using the HADCRU data, they have inadvertently become part of the conspiracy (insofar as the data appear to have been fudged) and their results would be just as tainted as those of the academics at EAU and elsewhere. As they say in computerese – GIGO (garbage in …)
Then you ask whether there is global warming. I would say, yes (although not based on the HADCRU data). The warming, though, appears to have been going on ever since the 17th century. The Medieval period was one of quite warm weather which Mann was trying to suppress (then followed by a mini ice age as the sun became spotless). Also, it should be observed, after the glaciers recently melted in Switzerland, Roman mines were found where the glaciers were. That means the glaciers weren’t there once before, so it was just as warm in the earlier Roman period as it is now. Thus, the warming we have been experiencing since the 17th century may be part of a longer cycle that has nothing to do with CO2. Indeed, while there may be correlation between warming and COS, that does not indicate causation. And indeed some evidence points to the causation going the other way, from warming to increased CO2.
Then you ask, whether humankind is causing the global warming, to which I have two answers. The first is that I doubt it. (See some of my points in previous paragraph.) Also, remember, in the past ten years, it has either not gotten warmer or even cooled. All during that time CO2 has increased. If the main premise of the AGW speculation is that CO2 causes warming, then I would be quite puzzled to find a lack of warming with increasing CO2 levels. That would lead me to re-examine my hypothesis.
But even let’s suppose humankind was causing global warming. Then, whether we should do anything about it becomes an economic issue. It should be observed that in the recent warming period, especially in the 20th century, there has been an explosion of widespread wealth accumulation. Thus, even individuals at the bottom of the income distribution enjoy a quality of life that not even the richest individuals in the 19th century could not imagine, and that has occurred not only in America but elsewhere in the world. Put more simply, as it has gotten warmer we have gotten to better off. So, whether we want to, or should do anything to reduce the things causing the speculative AGW becomes a cost/benefit analysis for humankind. What are the costs and benefits of warming to humankind versus the cost and benefits of reducing the use of those things contributing to the warming, especially by artificially increasing the prices of those things. Moreover, what will be the future effects on economic progress that might reverse the putative effects of AGW if we put a damper on progress now. I sincerely doubt that anyone has made a reasonable calculation of the cost of benefits of such things, and I doubt that the benefits of reducing the things causing putative AGW effects outweigh the costs of doing so.

When “The Great Global Warming Swindle” was released I procured a copy and
brought it to a Professor of Sociology friend of mine. He asked me to show two of his classes the DVD. Well he was amazed by their interest, their question and answer periods were amazing. Their own statements about universal lying in every sphere of social activity was simulating.
Their Professor was impressed by their spontaneity and agreement about the depth of corruption found in every aspect of U.S. society, government, media and science. I was proud of them for seeing it for what it was. There’s hope. I believe that there is going to be a day of reckoning on a global level against the “internationals” who will be identified and confronted for
their crimes perpetrated against citizens everywhere on this planet.

And in my view, that is exactly the way that climategate should continue to play out. The media is sooo invested into glowbull warmongering that nothing that they could say about it now could possibly be trusted. It is my personal belief that the media has played this game far too long but their investiture in carrying the water for the IPCC, the UN, the CRU and all kinds of wacky leftwing entities is coming to a rapid hard landing…and this event looks like it will truly accelerate it. The media tied themselves to this beast and what I think we are seeing is their jump the shark moment. After getting to the point where nothing they say can be trusted, should we hope that they will now change course and accurately report on this in any kind of fair and balanced way? Not a chance and frankly, we shouldn’t give them the chance since they don’t deserve it. In America, the media is already losing viewer and readership daily and I personally won’t be happy until they are all virtually out of business. How can an enormous story such as this have the entire internet buzzing and not a word by the lamestream media? It just goes to show that we truly do live in a parallel universe and since the internet has proved it is the only place where there is a hope of finding any truth, let the old media die and there is no point in even mourning its passing.

So what will be the fall-out from the leaked CRU files? What happens when politically connected scientists manipulate data to buttress a flawed correlation that increasing CO2 concentrations drive increases in global temperatures.As expected, the narrative now becomes an exercise in the dissembling of culpability and the inevitable claims of victimhood by the principles.
There should be no quarter spared in aggressively pursuing the perpetrators at every level and calling attention to all who have participated in the conspiracy to fraudulently access public funding based on the manipulation of data and research. The outright falsification of the scientific method, the craven self-interest demonstrated by the those who would foist the ultimate hoax onto an unsuspecting world for political and monetary gain; the politicians blindly signing onto invasive regulations, editors of peer-reviewed journals willfully discounting dissenting opinion in favor of sensational headlines and the banishment of objective experts and opinions to the scientific equivalent of Botany Bay is unforgivable.
The virtue of scientific endeavor and therefore the entire community must be held to the highest of standards. There can be absolutely no compromise on the manipulation of data, research techniques or scientific method – and for those who breech the protocols and endeavor to manufacture results – justice must be swift and uncompromising. To do anything other than to issue a ‘scarlet letter’ to those who would perpetrate fraud on a scale such as this would border on criminal itself.
Prison is where they belong. Plus they should have to give back ALL our money. There must be accountability.
Global warming scientists have tarnished the profession and occuaption of ‘scientist.’ All honest scientists of the world — if there any — need to unite, denounce this, and install new procedures and standards to prevent this from ever happening again. Otherwise, for now I assume all are corrupt.
This blemish will have to be recorded in the history books so our descendents can avoid the next climate scare (they seem to occur every 30-40 years with every natural trend change and new generation).
There must be a comprehensive investigation by each country whose gov’t has funded climate research. I want to see their bank accounts and learn about their lifestyles. How much CO2 were they emitting? Who was polluting the planet the most?
We knew they were corrupt because global warming was being pushed almost exclusively by liberals.

If I read my histories rightly, it seems to me that sometimes all a civilization has left in times of crisis is a few rustic provincials to even things up a bit. And come we will when summoned to a righteous cause. But I don’t regard getting angry is worth a bucket of spit. Nope, I want to get even. In fact, I want more than that; I want victory. I’m too damn proud, too damn independent, and too damn jealous of my prerogatives as a free man to have it any other way.
There is a place just up the road from me called Dalton Canyon. It was a hide-out many years ago for the infamous Dalton gang. There was a time when criminals had to hide from law-abiding citizens. The area is full of colorful place names like Horse Thief Meadows. Today I feel like I have to hide from my government. Something has gone terribly wrong. It ain’t right. Situation needs fix’n.
I’m not learned enough to know why history is repetitive, but I understand the lesson. Liberty needs defending and the process by my best reckoning is ongoing and constant. The fight is on and it’s time to stand up and be counted. If our (disloyal) opposition had bothered to consult history, they would know that a citizen republic is a dangerous beast when provoked.
Well, I reckon that’s just the way it is. I think when the current fight is finished, I’ll start my own brewery. Ben Franklin said, “beer is proof that God loves us.” I’ll name my first batch Lord Monckton’s Private Reserve. You’re invited. Quaffing beer is a very egalitarian experience. Just another reason to love it.
Regarding my earlier post 114, the context for this is that the preceding paragraph (which did not make it on to the post) was a quotation of Viscount Monckton who was bemoaning the fact that the media has been quite silent. Incidentally, Glenn Beck on Fox did a nice piece about it today.
Bad science gets punished by the scientific community, severely. If these researchers made up data, they will lose their reputations and their funding. Very likely they’ll be out of a job. Scientific researchers work for years, decades to build up their reputation; it’s the most precious thing they have. If their reputation is destroyed, that’s the end of their careers.
So put away the pitchforks and torches — there is already a punishment for bad science, much more so than for bad behavior in almost any other job.
Bad science is not a crime, just like lying is not a crime, except under certain circumstances. What is it some of these researchers are claimed to have done?
1. Fudging results by cherrypicking their data. Very bad science. But not illegal.
2. Trying to block other authors by apparently threatening journal editors. Very unethical. (Though, as a scientific reviewer myself, I have to say that the threat that “I won’t send you a paper to review” isn’t particularly terrifying — my response is more like “Thank you for saving me some work!”)
3. Not sharing their data even when hit with FOIA requests. Let’s keep this in perspective. Scientific data is extremely expensive to acquire. Would you really want to hike around Siberia taking tree core samples for years and then have to give the data up for free to the world? A lot of people wouldn’t even do the hard data collection work at all, and scientific progress would suffer. Using FOIA to take someone’s scientific data is a very unfriendly action. I have a bit of sympathy. Imagine if people could make FOIA requests of *you* and force you to do lots of work to bundle up your work and make it publicly available. And even if their attempts to evade FOIA are somehow illegal, has anyone ever gone to jail for FOIA? This doesn’t seem like the place to start!
The real problem here is not that bad science exists. It’s that political decisions may be being made on the basis of bad science. The right approach is to make sure when we pass far-reaching laws on the basis of science, that the underlying data has been made available and has been checked by independent researchers. The wrong (and profoundly non-conservative) approach is to force all scientists to be perfect under penalty of law. There are good, existing mechanisms to achieve confidence in scientific judgments; they just don’t get used by the political system, or the media.

You don’t have to convince me, and if someone has some data that refutes that information (or misinformation, if that’s what it is), and their data shows that rural land weather reporting stations do NOT show a temperature rise, then it should be presented ASAP.

I’m fantasizing about Algore’s fat face when he has to return his Nobel Peace Prize…..not that it’s worth a whole hell of a lot, lately, as a symbol of intellectual accomplishment—but, it probably paid for his electric bill for a month or so….
What is the truth? A sharp two edged sword! It cuts in both directions and saves no one who denies it. It pierces both joint and marrow and searches out the deep things which are not apparent to the naked eye but are suspected by those who are susceptible to it, it being the truth.
The funny thing about the truth is that it doesn’t make an appearance until it is demanded by those who seek it and then the truth shows up on the scene of the crime to exact justice and meet out punishment. So rejoice! Fight the good fight and be confident in the truth for the truth always wins.

I got this outrageous E-mail by some idiot that wants to check our light-bulb figures. If I see him I promise you I’ll beat the crap out of him. Suggest that you immediately delete everything. Chris will do the same. We can’t have others coming and checking our light bulbs. Scientific scrutiny and freedom of information in my ass! I propose that we gang up and oust this annoying man from everything. There is a lot wrong with the CRU climate data. They have never kept their figures under proper control (assuming, I suppose, that rapid global warming would make old data irrelevent, because they are firm believers)
And now we can see them frantically fudging code and data to keep their beliefs in play. This is reprehensible and wrong, but understandable. Fred Hoyle did much the same kind of thing to try to rescue his ‘Steady State’ theory.
But what Viscount Monckton omits to mention is the evidence of corrupt practice in denying climate sceptics any platform for their views. This is far worse – it is a direct attack on science, and dispicable behaviour which should be grounds for instant dismissal. Corruption now seems to be endemic in all ‘concensus’ climate science, and this cosy elite should be thrown out of their taxpayer-funded nests, before they waste any more of our money….

They would not have experienced the aggregate financial benefits of that theft, but we would all be much poorer and in aggregate it would be far in excess of $50 billion. it would extend for generations and it would be global. the poverty (and less wealth created) is pretty much incalculable.

One person mentioned that other researchers are doing this kind of science. Given the context of the exposure of possible fraud, I don’t think it’d be too far of leap to presume that the same fraud is taking place in other facilities. Follow the emails.

We should keep in mind the emotional, non-rational, and arguably unconscious motivations and drives that made the global catastrophe scenario so acceptable to so many.
“Global warming” is a catch-phrase for something that has hung over mankind for millenia: the notion of a universal catastrophe (think Noah) that overwhelms the earth and all who live on it. One of the more recent versions of of this scenario is the “global nuclear holocaust” of the 1970s.
The psychology of the attractiveness of such scenarios is obscure to me–I’m not a psychologist–but I can recognize mass hysteria when I see it, and the people who concocted this hoax can see it too.
The real question is why they did it. I’m not referring to the various monetary/political gains that would come from “being right” in such massive global predictions, but rather the psychological “income” that comes from doing such a scam successfully.
A brief version of my answer is “the desire for power.” Imagine the “power” wielded by scientists who believe–and much more important, make others believe–that they and they alone understand and therefore control the destiny of the whole planet.
For my money, this is where the true center of gravity of this global scam rests: they know there is fool born every day, and over time that makes for a lot of fools. If you’re a scientist of the peculiarly scummy sort as the global warming set seems to be, think of the pleasure it must give you to know that you–YOU!–have the power to make so many people afraid, and make them in turn listen to you and take you seriously.
This is not “bad science,” or at least not bad science only: this is the desire to play God.

n most technical controversies , if you get 17,000 scientists and 9,000 PhD’s to sign a petition attesting to the truth or inconsequence of something, you can reasonably expect so large a cohort to prove their competence by laying reams and reams of bibliography on the line, because real scientists really do publish many papers in their fields – that’s the essence of their expertise.
Now I’ve known Monckton for years, and in that time fewer than four dozen of those 20-something thousand anti-warmistsas have managed to pump out a single climate science paper.
And in the same decade, Ian’s cohort has scored exactly two debating points under one subject heading- palaeoclimtology. Alas for conspiracy theorists , the journal that hosted the far famed bum splice in the shaft of the hockey stick was the one that , oly peer review, Ian!, compelled Mann & Co to publish a corrigendum.
The rest is a sad and pusilanimous tale of PR and obsession , of interest only to those invincibly ignorant of what’s in the several hundred other science journals on which t he interdisciplinary study of climate change depends , and into which McIntyre ‘s hobby horse cavalry are free to lead the charge to scientific publication.
Having waited for a decade, the scientific world at large has grown mighty bored with thses guys dismal lack of scientific productivity, and a scandal in a teapot pertaining to the latest IPCC potboiler is not going to make up for their failure to come up with a countervailing mass of uncontroversial evidence.
What has been mustered instead is a cohort of cranks and scientific illiterates of the most literal sort- ones who bear a frightening resemblance to Al Gore in their incapacity to comprehend, let alone keep up with or master, the scientific literature.

Russell, I agree to an extent because I have a generally dim view of climate politics. However I object to the fact that in assessing Monckton you use the same flawed argument that alarmists are wont to use that says “well if you know better then where’s YOUR science”. Sadly this is a disingenuous argument. The scientific basis for the skeptics skepticism is the fundamental idea that there is no regular temperature, and even if there was no valid method of reconstructing temperatures is accurate enough to claim that temperature changes of 1-2 degrees are a drastic departure from some millennial average. So the skeptics aren’t in the business of presenting their science. They just want to analyze the proof that the IPCC bases its claims on. This is standard practice and good science. Furthermore, on the rare occasions that they do get full disclosure, armchair climatologists and bloggers find glaring flaws literally in minutes. So that the response has been to hide and deny access to data, is hardly a case of Monckton’s failure to respect scientific integrity.
If I were to share with you my (thoroughly splendid) theory on purple unicorns, you could freely choose to believe that there are not purple unicorns. And it would not require you publishing an opposing theory that got more TV airtime to entitle you to that opinion. As much as I’m sure you would agree with that, you are basically saying the opposite in your comments about Monckton. If you are of the belief that the accepted climatological record is what is wrong with the theory, then an opposing theory is not required. Global warming skepticism rests on the belief that there simply is no right answer. We don’t know exactly what the climate was like 8000 years ago and there’s simply no way to prove it today in the way proven things are proven. Twelve trees in Russia certainly doesn’t perfectly represent hundreds of years of global climate. In reality anyway. The entire issue is based on a premise that is not a verifiable reality. And multiple publishings based on the same flawed data is essentially worthless.
It could be argued that Monckton and friends minimal publishings on the topic of Climate Change indicates only that they are faster learners. Some UN scientists have been in this game for 30+ years. Only to be outdone by the blogosphere within minutes of publishing. You sure you want to vouch for THEIR quality of work any more than Moncktons?
Amazingly enough, even though this information came out on Thursday, Obama was on TV today with the leader of India saying that we are going to work together to combat climate change
and that we are another step closer to joining with the others at Copenhagen.

When we look at the fallout that the AGW movement has had globally – Agrofuels, solar energy esp in 3rd world countries, the billions on research grants and the millions if not billions that gore and his cronies have made from carbon taxes etc then the scale of the fraud becomes apparent.
What has irked me is not so much the damage that has been created in the west but the poor of third world countries who’s lives have been changed as they have been forced by their greedy governments to adapt to false flag of climate change.
The most disgusting catchphrase I have ever heard is “help save the planet” which kills my pig completely.
I am incensed that people are so simple that they cannot work out that CO2 has been at 7000ppm and resulted in no warming (paleozoic & mesozoic) as evidenced by proxies.

I work in medicine, and this may be surprising, but examples of medical science done imperfectly are legion. Does this mean that we should discard the entire body of work of medical science? We have not and we have been the better for it.
We should also remember that much of the changes that will be good for global warming will be good for us in general. Better public transportation, less dependence on foreign oil, and better public health from less pollution….what’s not to like?
The action of an entity is determined by its nature.

There is nothing so strange as the truth, nor as maligned.
It is sheep like Rob who attacks the messenger when he doesn’t like the message. I am not sure what they are called in the UK but here we call them liberal progressives.

Because science is a human activity it is as imperfect as any other human activity, and as riven with faction fad and fantasy.

I have to admit that I was not always a skeptic when it comes to Global Warming. In fact, I have tried to remain impartial. I also have to admit that I’m an advocate of alternative energy. My reasons for working on solar thermal energy are not environmental. The biggest single factor in all of this is my 11 year old granddaughter and Al Gore. The little girl is very astute and very talented in math and science.
I guest after having come in contact with the story about Global Warming at school and what Al Gore was saying about the demise of Polar Bears, she seemed quite concerned. Knowing what her old Pap was working on, having helped me in my shop and various project, she asked me what I thought. I was unable to answer and basically told her, lets investigate. Sometimes as the teacher we become the student and I have to say that my endeavor in to the science of global warming has been most interesting.
Statements that Al Gore has made:
“The Earth’s core temperature is millions degrees”
“The Polar Bear’s are decreasing in number”
“Geothermal energy is a new technology”
“We could see a 20 foot rise in sea level”
For reasons to keep this writing short I think the above four will be enough to prove a point, if your not to lazy to do the investigation on your own.
The tipping point for me, was Al Gore and his incredible Global Warming story’s. It’s sad to say that even school kid’s, with a little science have debunked his outlandish statement about Global Warming.
Since I have always loved science and technology it was easy to see that Al Gore was either stupid or nuts. Since he is a politician it is only logical to say he is lying to promote his own agenda that the earth is at risk if we don’t do something about global warming. All that I can say is that when it starts raining Polar Bears, I’ll believe him.
Now for those of you who have continued to support Mr. Gore and his incredible stories of global warming and impending doom of mother earth, I say go right ahead and follow. The View is all the same except for the lead dog.
Mr. Gore is disingenuous, he has even admitted that some times you have to exaggerate to get your point across. Hey folks, he is a politician, what would we expect, for him to tell the truth about global warming. My grandfather told me one time not to believe any thing you hear and only half what you see when it comes to politicians.
I’m not trying to get you to give up your views or belief one way or the other. I do have to say practice what you preach. If your on the side believing the earth is in serious trouble, then do something about it besides argue, take action, take up the cause, install a solar water heating system or put solar photovoltaic panels on your roof.
The thing I admire a bout Ed Begley Jr. and he is a serious environmentalist, is that he tries to practice what he preaches. And I can’t say the same for 90% of the environmental community. You a hypocrite if you don’t take action. Actions speak louder than words!

In light of the recent computer hack at the University of East Anglia, CRU and reading the released emails and other data over the past four days, I’m outraged! It’s time to pull the plug on these quacks. Phil Jones and Mike Mann are not true scientists, there only the science arm of the politicians and the politics of the IPCC.

Since I agree with the major thrust of Lord Monckton’s position, I do not want him to get into hot water on this particular point if he ever gets his debate with Al Gore. I agree that at times in the distant past, this has been the case. If the sun for example got a bit hotter and warmed the oceans, then basic chemistry determines that the dynamic equilibrium is shifted and since hot water can hold less CO2 than cold water, the CO2 in the air goes up. However since man is on the scene and emitting huge quantities of CO2 into the air, this is no longer relevant. So I believe this argument should not be used today against the global warming supporters. Furthermore, if it appears that numbers were cooked anyway to make it appear that warming had taken place over the last century, then why should the CO2 levels go up?

“According to the study, the Earth has continued to absorb more than half of the carbon dioxide pumped out by humans over the last 160 years.” So even if we pretend the temperature went up a degree over the last century, that should not change the status of the oceans being a net sink for carbon dioxide.

After analyzing the data and noticing very little difference due to CO2, this web site has the following quote:
“This may especially be the case if there is any overlap between the absorption bands of water vapor and CO2. In this scenario, because all the energy in the bands is absorbed, further increases in CO2 will have no additional greenhouse effect. The implication would be that the pre-industrial concentrations of atmospheric CO2 were already close to saturation (total absorption) levels.”
With what has happened (or didn’t happen) climate wise in the last ten years, the above should be proven wrong before huge amounts of money are spent to fight the increase in man made CO2.
Yeah man, go for it! You need to sue the blighters. Hit them where it hurts. Those climate fraudsters and their thousands of collaborators are all in on the game. Now you’ve got the proof that will convince a jury, take them out. Start from the top and work down the list. It’s the only way to stop them spreading their filthy lies about the oil and coal industries.

Everything that is happening now with Climategate has doubly vindicated Lord Monckton’s warnings. We can only hope that the elitists gathering in Copenhagen stammer and have second thoughts about signing that destructive and suicidal Communiqué. I would like to focus on the result more than on the means. For the moment let us agree with the author that climate change is big lie. If it means less dependence on depleting source of crude and coal, so be it. It gives a much needed thrust to the greener innovations.

Funny thing with past increase in CO2 levels after increase in temperature: it did not further increase temperatures on earth. And that is relevant, even if you say that nowadays humans introduce large amounts of CO2 and in the past we did not. Introducing large amounts of CO2 from oceans should have further increased temperatures if global warming theory is accurate, that should have led to further increase in ocean-temperatures and that should have led to further release in CO2, i.e. the Earth should have ended up in a Venus-kind of planet, already millions of years ago. Somehow there is a flaw in the AGW-theory. At least there is no indication whatsoever from past records that the increase in CO2 levels from ocean degassing led to an increase in temperatures…
Thank you for that de^mol. The graph with the three items, including methane was very illuminating. I think it is important to understand which parts of the graphs are useful and which are not useful in the present situation.
1. The graphs CAN be used to show that Gore is wrong about rising temperatures following carbon dioxide jumps.
2. The graphs CANNOT be used to explain the present spike in CO2 levels since these were caused by man and not the sun and warmer temperatures.
3. The graphs CAN be used to show that if the sun decides to “shift gears”, the spike in carbon dioxide will do absolutely nothing to prevent cooling.

You have got to be kidding. Monckton is a right wing extremist who knows little about science but has an opinion on climate change as irrational as all his others; Europe, the NHS, Aids. That so many Americans like him simply reflects how much of American political opinion has lost touch with reality. Like it or not industrialisation whether capitalist or socialist driven is damaging the environment. It is not just global warming it is also pollution, mass extinction of a whole range of flora and fauna, the rapid depletion of scarce resources, large scale monoculture farming. Dismissing this as scaremongering left wing nonsense is engaging in wishful thinking of the most unscientific kind – however that seems to be the common currency around here. So, carry on with your internet lead grasp on reality reading the same tiresome blogs where even the right wing US press is dismissed the the ‘MSM’, your crap arguments that always link to some other right wing site, continue with your persecution complex, your bizarre idea that environmentalism is some kind of plot to rob you of your precious freedom to behave like greedy spoilt children who want everything and want it now…..oh and ignore the rational scientific approach which shows we have got some issues that need to be taken seriously.

What annoys me (in addition to the pure lies of it all)is the anxiety that many people suffer as a result of all this. Some people really take it all to heart and believing what the government and scientists say think the end of the world is nigh.
Why should I believe Monckton who, until some well meaning but bigoted colleague forwarded his article to me I had never heard, over the scores of scientific reports I have read that tell me climate change is happening and the human contribution is significant?
