U.S. Imams Call for Restricting Free Speech
As the Muhammad movie riots continued into a second week, two imams based in the United States joined the calls from the grand imam of Al-Azhar, the grand mufti of Saudi Arabia, and the Muslim Brotherhood for the U.S. to criminalize criticism of Islam.
Sheikh Husham al-Husainy of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn, Michigan, said about the worldwide Muslim riots that “the only solution is to replace the hate with love.” And “love,” in his mind, meant that “they should put a law not to insult a spiritual leader.”
Meanwhile, Imam Mohammad Qatanani of the Islamic Center of Passaic County, New Jersey, said that “we, as Americans, have to put limits and borders [on] freedom of speech,” for while Americans do indeed have the freedom of speech, they have “no right” to talk about topics holy to Muslims, for to do so will lead to “hatred or war among people.”
Al-Husainy and Qatanani are not marginal, fringe characters. Al-Husainy last year was the featured cleric on All-American Muslim, a reality showed that aired on The Learning Channel and was dedicated to countering the chimerical threat of “Islamophobia” by showing Muslims as ordinary folks leading ordinary lives. Yet, according to Walid Shoebat and Ben Barrack, he is also “a signatory to the Jerusalem Document of 2009, which reads more like Mein Kampf. It refers to the war on Zionism as a war between “good and evil.” Zionism is considered an “aggression” that is infecting “the entire human race.” Muslims are told to “get ready for the holy Jihad.” The document also expresses support for a jihad terrorist group: “We remind our sons to get ready to carry out their duty in Holy Jihad and continue the path which our young valiant men in Hezbollah began in Southern Lebanon.”
Al-Husainy also gave an invocation at the Democratic National Committee’s Annual Winter Meeting in 2007. Al-Husainy prayed:
Through you, God, we unite. So guide us to the right path. The path of the people you bless, not the path of the people you doom. … And help us to stop the war and violence, and oppression and occupation.
He was echoing the Fatiha, the first sura of the Qur’an and most common prayer of Islam. It asks Allah: “Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favoured; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray.” The traditional and mainstream Islamic understanding of this is that the “straight path” is Islam, while the path of those who have earned Allah’s anger are the Jews, and those who have gone astray are the Christians. Thus al-Husainy was condemning Judaism and Christianity right under the bowed heads of the assembled Democrats. And his reference to “occupation” was clearly, coming from this supporter of Hezbollah, a dig at Israel.
As for Qatanani, investigative journalist Daniel Greenfield reports that,
despite the fact that Mohammed Qatanani was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, the organization that is behind both al-Qaeda and Hamas, despite his own guilty plea to being a member of Hamas, and despite the fact that even in the United States, he had defended a charity that provided funds to children of suicide bombers (this is done as an incentive to reassure terrorists that if they die their families will be taken care of), Qatanani was not deported.
Yet New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently had Qatanani at the governor’s mansion for his Ramadan Iftar dinner. Christie was glad to see him, calling him his “friend” and telling him before the audience: “I’m glad to have you here.” Of Qatanani, he said: “In all my interactions with the imam, he has attempted to be a force for good in his community, in our state with law enforcement, with those of us who have gotten to know him for the years.” Will Christie now explain to his friend about the importance of the freedom of speech?
The striking thing about the statements from al-Husainy and Qatanani is not that they called for restriction of the freedom of speech. After all, they are mainstream Muslims, and Islamic law, both Sunni (Qatanani) and Shi’ite (al-Husainy), denies the freedom of speech and forbids criticism of Allah or Muhammad on pain of death. What is striking is that despite their obvious attachment to Sharia in its traditional and mainstream form, as well as their support for the jihad terror groups Hamas (Qatanani) and Hezbollah (al-Husainy), both clerics continue to enjoy a reputation as “moderates.” Qatanani has the fervent allegiance of a state governor and prominent player in national politics, and al-Husainy is featured at gatherings of a major party and on national television.
It is certain that if al-Husainy and Qatanani were evangelical Christian pastors who had expressed support for the Ku Klux Klan and called for repeal of the First Amendment, Chris Christie, the Democratic National Committee, and The Learning Channel would be nowhere near them, except to issue condemnations wherever necessary. But when it comes to Muslims, the rules are different: so avid are politicians and the mainstream media to find “moderates” and feature them, thereby proving that they are not “Islamophobic,” that they uncritically embrace any Muslim leader who smiles and talks of peace.
What’s even worse is that when these “moderates” are exposed as not quite so moderate as all that, no one cares. No supporter of al-Husainy or Qatanani is going to rebuke either one for their opposition to the First Amendment – not even Chris Christie. More’s the pity.

What if they were born in America? Then what? And, what about all the OTHER Americans who hate their own country? What do we do with THEM?
My philosophy is to tell them to find a country in the world where they will be happier–for there are hundreds of countries available for immigration. To say otherwise would insult the tens of millions of immigrants to left their families, homelands, and way of life to come HERE for the freedom America offered them.
That guarantee of freedom comes from our Constitution, and a set of Founders who created a government of LAWS, not a govt based on the whims of Man. This makes America different from every other country on earth. For those who despise our laws, let them find a country more suitable to their taste.

Now you’re catching on! In reality–regardless of what one calls themselves (Democrat, Republican, Muslim, Terrorist, etc.)–there are only 2 kinds of people in this world, and the difference is pointed out in Ecclesiastes 10:2-3.

So, it behooves all of us to seek wisdom; which comes from God. No one’s attitude is etched in stone. Everyone’s heart can be changed. According to the Bible, God wishes NO ONE to perish. But each person must CHOOSE their own path, for that is the Free Will God has given each of us. We cannot force a fool to become wise; he or she must choose to do so of their own free will.
While I totally disagree that ‘laws’ restricting free speech need to be enacted to appease the Islamic groups, I do see a need for better manners on the part of some Americans. Going down the slippery slope of beginning to enact laws restricting free speech will only lead to more and more laws restricting free speech until free speech is nothing more than a historical footnote.
Grace, I’m not sure what you’re alluding to. Are you saying that we shouldn’t say what we wish about Islam, Mohammed, Catholics, the Pope, Southern Baptists, Jerry Falwell etc? Why? If the Pope and the Catholics as well as the Southern Baptists can deal with it, why not Islam and its adherents? We’re about to have an American Mormon elected into the Presidency. What about ALL of the broadcasters that have been questioning Romney’s faith?
If you’re afraid of the slippery slope (as we ALL should be) the last thing we need to do is insist on everyone speaking politely about Islam. Especially, when they will threaten you with death if they’re offended. There’s enough political correctness going around that we need to shy away from the very idea of not offending Muslims.
They need their own Reformation and Enlightenment and some very serious introspection and decide they’re joining the 21st century. Otherwise, they will fade away into another backward part of modern culture. They’re not far from it now. There is no society as out of tune with the world as the Muslims. That is unless you wish to count some lost some Amazonian tribe. Look at ANY country that is dominated by Islam, ANY society that is cowed by its imams, ANY culture that is shadowed by the ghost of Mohammed and you will find a country, a society and a culture that is struggling with ignorance, poverty, abject humiliation and oppression of women.
Some have said (Daniel Pipes is one) that the Muslims need to develop thicker skins and that one way to do it is to offend these people daily, EVERY DAY until they get over it. I don’t particularly recommend it but it’s certainly worth thinking about when a lot of Americans are willing to cede their right to free speech.
At the end of the day, most Americans don’t really give a damn as to whether someone is Catholic, or Baptists or Muslim until someone says “my religion is special. I can say anything I want about Jews but you can’t say anything negative about Islam”.

It’s not a question of manners. You offend them by being. Today the complaint is a cheap youtube video. Tomorrow it will be a bumper sticker. Next week it will be the mention of God on our money. Next year, it will be some converted to Sunni, so the Shiites will attack them.

A significant barometer of our losing the right to free speech in America is the fact that very few of us posting on websites such as this one use our real names. We can speak freely because we know we will not be connected with our free, and sometimes Wild West, online discussion.
By comparison, in most other venues—at church, at the office, and at the neighborhood block party—most of us filter what we say for fear of being labeled a social pariah.
Here is an example of filtering. When I was growing up in the 1950s, it was acceptable to tell jokes about black people, but it was considered obscene to tell sexual jokes. Today, the crudest of sexual jokes can be told just about anywhere; certainly on TV, and particularly on cable TV. Today, unless you are black, your entire life and personal reputation can be destroyed if you tell a racial joke. (If you are Chris Rock, you can combine a graphic sexual joke with an offensive racial joke.)
I am not not particularly interested in telling obscene sexual jokes or offensive racial jokes—-but, clearly we do not have free, unrestricted, speech. Most of us pause, or hedge, between the time we think of any number of politically incorrect thoughts, and the time we speak.
It is sad, really.
You are correct, we self-edit our speech. Our Freedom of Speech has already been abridged by Hate Crime and Hate Speech legislation.
I grew up moderating my speech and behavior out of respect for those that might be offended by vulgar or profane words, and loud or obnoxious behavior. For those I did not respect I did not moderate. Today it seems that youth has no respect for anyone, as far as moderating their speech or behavior; in fact they seem to revel in disrespecting others.
Well, I went a bit off-course there. What I meant to say: I reserve the right to express my opinions of religion and politics and if I can do so without using vulgar speech I will. I will say what I think about Islam in polite terms; if Islamists are offended by my opinion, tough. They don’t withhold their opinions of infidels.

When you boil all this anti-free speech down to the grounds what it amounts to is you can’t tell the difference anymore between Muslims and Democrats on the issue. But then you can’t tell much of a difference between them on anything else—except for a belief in God.

I am not for any restrictions upon the right of free speech. But if we are to go down that path, I would suggest starting with laws that would severely punish those advocating restrictions upon free speech, as paradoxical as that may sound. And as long as we are going to take disregard of the Constitution to a new level, let us take away that stupid prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment in regard to those who advocate restrictions upon free speech.
As long as the Constitution means nothing, lets burn off the arms and legs of any Muslim who wants to ban criticism or disrespect for Islam and then feed the remains to feral pigs.

Their ultimate goal is “true religious freedom everywhere” which means “Islamic World Domination,” for their Quran states that Islam is the only valid religion.
Of course, they don’t care that our Constitution guarantees real freedom of religion, and freedom of speech. They do not believe in any other law save for their own. They beieve they are in the right, and everyone else is wrong. Heck, their “conversion” statement even denies the One True God by saying, “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammed is his prophet.” (Rational folks know that “allah” is a false god, for he instructs his followers to hate instead of Love.)
I know that is an irrational point of view from our perspective, but you have to understand they’ve been brainwashed into this cultish view since earliest childhood. They were born to be parrots, and to repeat every lie they were taught. The true believers of that “religion” have no rational thought process, for it has been denied any avenue for growth.
Even so, there is a rumor going around that Muslims are converting to Christianity in record numbers. Perhaps the current ‘teachers’ of Islam are not doing such a great job of brainwashing? If a religion is so brittle that it can’t stand outside pressure then it’s time for that religion to have a reformation. I think we should treat Muslims just like Muslims treat Jews.
Well, I was raised in a nice liberal home, back when ‘liberal’ also included some measure of common sense. True, conservative is better but back then liberal did not equate to overt self-hatred or proposing the destruction of your own culture – at least not overtly.
Like most everybody else who has reached the point of ‘intolerance’ towards the phenomenon of Islam, I have had enough. I have seen the result of dhimmi-ism. It doesn’t work on any level. I have seen how many modern liberal (PC) people are doubly self-destructive – towards their own culture, spending energies inveighing against it, and in their reflexive genuflecting towards Islamic and other tyrants.
I have just had enough. I had the experience of finding this similar mentality entrenched in the company I worked at in northern Israel last year and this. Being labeled as a right-winger made me a partial outcast in the firm, and contributed to my decision to leave. And that has hurt me. Maybe I will be cleverer in the future, but I will be no less convinced and resolute that Islam must be opposed. Or we all die.

The ONLY limit to Free Speech, should be the Truth!
As even Aristotle noted long ago, slander is only pre-judice, and vice-versa; presenting accusatory opinions as if they were facts (making accusations against someone else, BEFORE having the facts straight)! And that breaks the Golden Rule of Law (to not attack first)!
Of course, aggressively chanting or yelling a truth at someone in a threatening manner ALSO breaks the Golden Rule, because all threats are psychological attacks (aka: coercion, duress, extortion, “terrorism”) and all non-defensive attacks are crimes.
But ‘threatening’ a criminal with his just punishments, after he’s already committed his crimes, isn’t a theat so much as a promise!
The only other way speech should be limited, is if it incites un-just violence against innocent others (as opposed to legislators and police chiefs calling for violence against those who have already attacked innocent others, as in if they call for the death-penalty, for instance).
The Defense of Truth should always apply.
And all religions are lies. Here’s the most simple, obvious differences between philosophy, science, and religion:
1). Philosophy is speculation, presented AS speculation.
2). Science is tested speculation, presented AS tested speculation.
3). Religion is speculation, presented AS fact.

I would go along with this agreement:
1) All Mosques will install ADA compliant wireless RF assisted hearing systems in each room where lectures, teaching, and religious guidance and instruction takes place and that the transmitters will be turned on and active during each such use of the room. The customary exceptions to disclosure will apply to protected private party to clergy communications. The RF transmitters will radiate to a distance of at least 200 feet beyond the exterior walls of the mosque and will be unencrypted and conform to FCC regulations for such devices.
2) All mosques submit accurate and factual financial documents that comply with IRS and the various State requirements for the usual and customary tax compliance requirements.
3) I agree that Muslims who are lawfully within the borders of the Unites States of America deserve the same Constitutional protections as I presently do with no exception. Further we jointly agree that this is the very finest civil system of human rights available in the world, and that violations of civil rights protected under the Constitution are not only unlawful but constitute an affront to the government and the people of the United States, are an act contrary to established law, and are acts deserving of severe punishment as specified in law.
