A large part of why the gulf between the Right and the Left in America now feels so large is because nonsense screeds demonizing one side or the other have become all too common and far too many people would rather live in an echo chamber where there own views are magnified than to actually engage with people who have honest differences of opinion.

pch1013,

While that is sometimes true, even right wingers who aren't religious, such as myself, see some overlap between religion's ethical prescriptions and the common good. There is no such overlap between the left's political religion and the common good.

No Burt, it isn't DNA. This is an inbred psychological trait stemming back hundreds of years. These are the same people who didn't want America to be born...some moved back to England to be with their King, some moved to Canada (explains a lot) and some stayed here and have been trying to change it every since. What is remarkable to me is that the rich are the ones insistent on this. Old or new rich are both the same...I've got mine and can buy and live like I want, but you peasants can't. We will tell you how you will live. Sound familiar?
Welcome to liberal fascism!

"for left-wingers politics is a form of religion"

And for right-wingers, religion is a form of politics.

You argue for reason yet start this piece saying something unreasonable: "Just as some people are born left-handed, others, unfortunately, are born left-wingers."

If DNA's got something to do with it, we don't have the evidence yet.

I think it's simply explained: for left-wingers politics is a form of religion, thus their political convictions can be as impervious to reason as religious dogma.

Nice data point on Jack Henry Robbins. My jaw dropped on that one!
