The Upcoming Rachel Corrie Trial: Go After Her Real Killers
Jerusalem — Craig and Cindy Corrie, I welcome you to Israel where, I understand, you plan to bring a civil suit before an Israeli court on March 10 “to put on public record,” the British Guardian wrote, “the events that led to [your] daughter Rachel’s death in March 2003.”
I thank God for the well-being of my children and grandchildren, and I cannot imagine the pain and anger you feel over the loss of your daughter, Rachel.
My sons have served as combat soldiers, and may have actually fought on the very ground where your daughter died. The area was laced with tunnels to smuggle weapons and explosives for use against Israelis. My children are Israelis who ride in buses and eat in pizzerias, and by the grace of God they have been spared attacks by the suicide bombers your daughter championed.
Some may see the irony in your using the courts and the free press of Israel in your attempt to pursue and denounce the nation your daughter loathed. I see the tragedy in your allying with the International Solidarity Movement — the very people and organization who led and, in a sense, really pushed Rachel to her death.
According to news accounts, Israel will permit four of Corrie’s colleagues from the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) to enter Israel to give testimony on what occurred that day. Actually, I believe it’s a good decision to permit the four into Israel’s jurisdiction where the ISM members could and should be arrested for reckless endangerment, fraud, manslaughter, aiding terrorists, and a host of other charges. The public may also discover who paid for your lawsuit and the expenses of bringing you and ISM witnesses to Israel.
Mr. and Mrs. Corrie, three pictures relating to your daughter are etched in my memory.
The first is a very agonizing photo of your daughter broken and crumpled and bleeding in a Gaza field — with her ISM friends attempting to help her:

But I am troubled by the pictures. Who took them? Someone from ISM, according to the organization’s literature. Why wasn’t that person aiding your daughter? (God, I hope they were not posing her for a better shot!) What would motivate a person to not drop everything to help a wounded colleague? Is the ISM hatred of Israel so strong that his first priority was to document the scene? Was Corrie just an expendable foot soldier of an evil organization that used her for the photo-op? Apparently so. Her ISM colleague and handler Joseph Smith, who now takes the name Joseph Carr, eulogized Rachel with these horrifying words:
The spirit that she died for is worth a life. This idea of resistance, this spirit of resisting this brutal occupying force, is worth anything. And many, many, many Palestinians give their lives for it all the time. So the life of one international, I feel, is more than worth the spirit of resisting oppression.
The second photo is that of a very angry woman surrounded by a mob of children as she burns an American flag at a pro-Saddam Hussein rally:
The rage is palpable. What did she hate more, Israel or the United States? I suspect the former, because she justified the use of terrorism against Israeli civilians. She imbibed the ISM philosophy, as stated by one of its leaders during an interview with Al-Jazeera: “We recognize that violence is necessary and it is permissible for oppressed and occupied people to use armed resistance and we recognize their right to do so.”
That radical belief is clear in a phone message Rachel left you, Cindy, with instructions on how to speak to the press:
Please think about your language when you talk to them. I think it was smart that you’re wary of using the word “terrorism,” and if you talk about the cycle of violence, or “an eye for an eye,” you could be perpetuating the idea that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a balanced conflict, instead of a largely unarmed people against the fourth most powerful military in the world.
Rachel spoke those words in 2003 after Israel had buried 1000 civilians killed in Palestinian suicide bomber attacks.
And the third picture is of your earlier visit to the region to see where your daughter lived and died. You were met and honored by Yasser Arafat:
That is where you should have realized that you daughter was his pawn, another young idealist brainwashed into hating Israel. Arafat regaled in his “shahids,” the suicide bombers who blew up Israeli civilians. The New York Times documented the training of 25,000 Palestinian teens in the summer prior to launching the September 2000 intifada. Your daughter Rachel was another impressionable youth recruited for the Palestinian cause. I’m sure that is hard for you to believe, but read what her ISM buddy Joseph Smith believed:
“We knew there was a risk,” Smith said, “but we also knew it never happened in the two years that we (the ISM) have been working here. I knew we take lots of precautions so that it doesn’t happen, that if it did happen it would have to be an intentional act by a soldier, in which case it would bring a lot of publicity and significance to the cause.”
According to another account:
“Her death serves me more than it served her,” said one activist [unclear if the speaker is an IMS activist or a Hamas activist] at a Hamas funeral. “Going in front of the tanks was heroic. Her death will bring more attention than the other 2,000 martyrs.”
And Corrie herself discussed the possibility of an American activist’s death as a propaganda tool:
You just can’t imagine it unless you see it, and even then you are always well aware that your experience is not at all the reality: what with the difficulties the Israeli Army would face if they shot an unarmed U.S. citizen.
Finally, who sent your daughter into Gaza? The International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led group, founded in August 2001 by Huwwaida Arraf, Adam Shapiro, Ghassan Andoni, Neta Golan, and George Rishmawi.
In July of 2004, the San Francisco Chronicle reported:
Rishmawi said the ISM’s main purpose is to increase international awareness of Palestinian suffering through the involvement of foreign activists, who pay their own way to the West Bank, where they are trained in various methods of nonviolent direct action.
“When Palestinians get shot by Israeli soldiers, no one is interested anymore,” Rishmawi said. “But if some of these foreign volunteers get shot or even killed, then the international media will sit up and take notice.”
Mr. and Mrs. Corrie, leave Israel with our deep condolences. It may be easier for you to live with the belief that Rachel was an idealistic fighter for peace. Maybe she was, but she was also used as a tool and discarded. ISM actually tried to market her as the “new Anne Frank.” Her life was wasted by a cruel, opportunistic, radical movement for whom the ends justify the means.

Idealistic tools make wonderful publicity for the “cause”. Perhaps learning the physics of stopping a bulldozer by sheer force of will in advance will prevent the next sadly misguided “student” from dying.

Apparently you believe that her confrontation with a bulldozer proved something, other than extremely poor judgement on her part. And extremely poor parenting on your part. It is indeed sad that your failure to be adequate parents, to guide or coax your daughter towards sanity, or at least point her towards the appropriate mental health facility was ultimately the root cause of her demise. The story of Rachel Corrie makes me sick. I didn’t follow the story as closely as I should have at the time. I assumed she was what the press made her out to be – just a young activist trying to work for peace. Perhaps misguided and naive, but with good motives. I looked at her death as a sad tragedy.
It wasn’t until just a few years ago that I learned the true story about who this woman was. I couldn’t believe that photo of her screaming and burning the picture of the flag. She was an angry woman who hated Israel and America with a murderous passion, and who sided with our enemies! A traitor in every sense of the word.
And yet how many people actually know this?

It is highly ironic that the group that is trying to upend Israel as “undemocratic,” is using its courts for their own ends. It is sad that the ISM does not see that their court case puts lies to their statements of how unfair Israel is. Can you imagine even speaking a contrary point of view in any Arab newspaper? I can’t. Nor do I think that Hamas, for whom she was fighting, would allow anyone to say anything decent about Israel, let alone bring a court case in its support.

I’m so sick of articles being wasted on this chick.
That image of Mz. Corrie raging like a psychopath among all the bemused Arab junior Jihadis once revolted me — but now I think of her roasting in her particular hell, raging against her monstrous evil and depravity, and kinda like that photo now, if only for that. It is a fitting memorial to her own hatred, a hatred that first consumed her humanity, and then annihilated the flimsy shell that remained behind for a time.
I was an observer at the famous Duke University Palestinian Solidarity Conference several years ago. As the Palestinians did a protest march after, I stood silently with a group of fellow Jews holding signs as they passed by. An elderly woman walked up to me and screamed in my face that her son, a Rachel Corrie wannabee, had also been killed in Israel when he wandered into a Palestinian mine field. Since it was obviously the Israelis’ fault she wanted to scream that we Jews were murderers of those righters-of-wrongs who went to someone elses’ country and put themselves into a war zone. I wanted to tell her of the hours that my daughter had spent in a bomb shelter when Katyushas were falling in the nursery playground where she was teaching or how my son, a soldier, had been dodging snipers’ bullets as he ferried food to Palestinian refugees. Instead, I just let her scream. I hope that it made her feel better.

I have no sympathy for Rachel’s parents nor do I offer any condolences. They raised a criminal who died while committing a crime. Innocent people in Israel died as a result of her actions. She got what she deserved.
I had never seen the photo of her broken and dying on that trash dump. It was very sad to see a young woman who had been brainwashed by her parents and her professors (at Evergreen College in Washington State) die for their hate.
That was my first impression.
My second impression was that this photo was clearly staged. The perfect composition, the position of her face, and the quiescence of all three of her companions make it clear that someone prepared this photo shoot. Either she was dead by then or they really didn’t care; I vote for the latter. Everything for the cause, you know.
When will these rich American kids stop vacationing in other peoples miseries. The fact that these rich kids are drawn to dedicate their lives to hating other people especially Jews doesn’t reflect well on her parents who obviously taught her this hatred.
I’ve always found this picture of Corrie disturbing. To my imagination it looks like the hate had consolidated its hold on her but hadn’t taken over utterly.

The incongruity in those images is that Corrie’s youthful looks are marred by hatred whereas her parents, especially the mother, look absolutely chipper.

I appreciate the clarity of your words. You make the case against Rachel and more directly the ISM with deep feelings and real power. However, I don’t believe that Rachel Corrie came to Israel and then Gaza to die. She believed that a people locked behind walls suffering as a result of the asymetical force of the IDF and the stubborness of succesive Israeli governments that were punishing the Palestinian people needed the help of internationals to wave a flag and just maybe garner the attention of a myopic world that largely saw Palestinians only as terrorists. There is no doubt that the members of Hamas and the Tanzim and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade carried out horrendous attacks on Israeli civilians. I have no capacity to accept murder of civilians on any level. As for Rachel Corrie, Tom Hurndal and Brian Avery, (who was shot in the face and survived),it apears that three ISM activists got in the way of a bulldozers and bullets all within a very short time. It was the feeling of many in the NGO community at the time that the government of Israel had taken the gloves off and was actively conveying a message to those internationals who stood with Palestinian activists against the power of the Isreli military. Hurdall’s shooter went to jail. Avery received a settlement from the Israeli government. And now, Rachel Corrie, will finally, postumously, will receive her day in court. I don’t know what was in the mind of the bulldozer driver on that day in Rafah. I do know that Corrie was in a bright orange vest shouting through a bullhorn with a lot of people watching.

Two questions: “Why is those self-appointed defenders of Human Rights who go to Gaza aren’t going to Sudan instead. The other one is: Isn’t “Huamn Right Watch” the group who engaged in anti-Israel bashing just after getting a pile of cash of Saudi Arabia?”
Rachel’s real killers are her parents, who force-fed their own hate filled pablum down her throat since the day of her birth. The remainder of that blame however, must go to Rachel herself. The question comes up because Israel recieves a ridiculously inordinate amount of criticism, both from political bodies like the UNHRC and from activist groups like the ISM. It’s entirely fair to wonder why that is the case. Why is Israel the cause célèbre of so many human rights groups and activists?
Giving the benefit of the doubt, one of the reasons has to be the fact that Israel is an open, democratic (dare I say, civiilzed) society with a military and government that respect the law. It’s the old saw “Ghandi would have been a footnote if India had been ruled by the Nazis”. If you went to Iran to protest, the government would just toss you in jail. There would be no media to fawn over your brave stand and you wouldn’t get your picture in the papers. Better to protest in Israel, where it’s SAFE.

you’re absolutely correct. The young Ms. Corrie went out of her way to be an enabler for the Jihadis, and in fact, her actions (flag burning, etc) exhibited clear signs of obsessive behavior. She was obviously a disturbed person and clearly needed professional help, but her parents failed her. It’s a shame that her parents instead of going after those who were responsible for her death, became willing tools in the hands of the same people who sacrificed their daughter.

Patawatamee Pete was a young Indian who lived on a reservation off of the Douglas County main road. During the summer he would hitch up his broken-down creaky wagon to his one eyed mule and bring Indian Squash and corn to town for sale. It wasn’t much of a living; but, it kept Pete in flour and bacon. He dearly loved bacon.
One day Sheriff Beres was patrolling the main road, riding his bay and chewing tobacco. You can chew tobacco and or ride a horse; however, its not easy to both at the same time. As it happened the poor bay stumbled at a inopportune moment causing the Sheriff to swallow a mouth full of chaw spit. It burned its way down the esophagus to his stomach causing a heave reaction. Coughing and gagging the Sheriff forced his stomach to contain its contents which was a horrible mistake. The chaw spit continued to burn there like a jalopino pepper only worse. It gave him a belly ache which kept getting worse with time. By the time poor Pete made it to this point on the road, Sheriff Beres was likened to a rabid dog that was just stung by a hornet.
Petes wagon creaked on by Sheriff Beres. Without warning the Sheriff reacted. He ordered, “Pull over there Pete!”
Pete pulled his wagon to the side of the road and the Sheriff continued, “Listen Pete, you was speedin. Everybody knows that the speed limit on this here road is one mile per hour. I could tell by the angle of your mule’s ears you was goin two miles per hour.”
Pete sat in quiet astonishment. The Sheriff held his stomach and howled on, “You know the penalty for speedin on this here road? Well its lynchin.”
For a moment the Sheriff sat quiet staring at Pete and rubbing his chin, “You know Pete I’ve knowed you for a long time. I’m agonna give you a chance. You can fight my bull dog or get lynched. Your choice!” The Sheriff’s bull dog was a mangy mean cuss known for his frequent fights with other dogs.
Pete didn’t have to think long. He knew lynching would be fatal however he stood a chance fighting the bull dog. He stammered, “I’ll fight your dog.”
At that point the Sheriff tied Pete’s hands behind his back and lead him to his back yard next to the jail house. There he dug a pit and buried poor Pete in it with only his head sticking out. Then he went to his cellar where he kept a jar of pig blood which he liberally applied to Pete’s head. A couple of whistles later the ugly bull dog appeared. Sheriff Beres grabbed him by the collar, “Sick him boy, get him!”
The dog ripped out of the Sheriff’s grip and charged directly at poor Pete. At the last second Pete threw his head to the left and the dog missed his lunge. He circled Pete’s head a few times and charged again. This time Pete flung his head to the right and the dog missed him again. The dog circled Pete a few more times and charged again. This time Pete threw his head directly back and as the dog ran directly over him, Pete bit a chunk out of the dog’s lower lip. The dog yelped in pain and ran back to the Sheriff. The Sheriff surveyed his dog for a moment and picked up his shovel. He walked deliberately over to Pete and hit him in the head with the shovel muttering, “Fight fair you dirty Injun!”
Now Sheriff Beres we all know the kind of justice you would mete out.
