The wild idealism of change that has swept the USA have not reached the Middle East. The cruel reality of hatred remains.

Paraphrasing Ayatollah Khatami of Iran:
‘Despite the slogan of change in America, our people have not changed. Our slogan remains: Death to America’

Well Barack Obama won; I wish him well but have little faith that if enacted his stated policies will improve conditions in the country. The first thing that will happen is the so called “Bush Tax Cuts” will be allowed to expire: raising taxes in an economic down turn has never been a good idea and will only increase the downward spiral: couple that with his stated intent to increase the Capital Gains tax (not because it will increase revenues but because it will be “Fairer”) and corporate taxes and foreign/domestic investment will slow if not grind to a halt. Next the ban on drilling in ANWAR and off shore USA will be extended, or made permanent, further restricting fuel supplies, when new greener energy sources are admittedly 10 years away; another drag on the economy. Then a windfall profits tax will be enacted further restricting oil and gas exploration and further limiting oil and gas production. A Cap and Trade CO2 bill will be passed to “Bankrupt the Coal Companies” and the subsidy on corn based ethanol will be doubled requiring us to burn more of the food supply. The price of fuel, electricity and food will skyrocket causing further constriction of the domestic economy; and since we are the market to the world, a world wide slowdown will accelerate. If he insists on renegotiating trade agreements with Canada etc. trade will flow to Europe and elsewhere further depressing the US economy. Canada has already begun negotiations with the EU because of his stated intent to do so. These are the types of things that occurred after the market crashed in 1929 that led to a world wide Depression that didn’t end until WW2 (not a good option) brought us out of it.

Having taken care of the most pressing domestic problems the Democrats in Congress will turn to other promises made during the campaign. A 100 billion stimulus package will be passed and the RPM’s of the money presses will be increased to pay for it. The effect of the stimulus will be no greater than the first package, negligible, but the poor and middle class will feel better as the wealth is spread around. Never mind that the increase in the money supply will further erode the value of the dollar, already down against most foreign currencies. Will he pursue the nearly 1 trillion in new programs and spending that he has proposed in light of a 4 to 7 hundred billion dollar predicted budget short fall and a Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid deficit that threaten to bankrupt the nation, or will it be put it off in hopes of improving economic conditions?
Not satisfied with the de facto nationalization of the financial industry a National Health Care Bill will be passed taking over another 25% of the economy. Unemployment insurance payments will be extended and the minimum wage will be tied to inflation and allowed to increase every year by a corresponding percentage. Small businesses will begin to close or lay off employees and the economy will go into free fall. Because of the lost revenue due to the severe economic downturn the Democratic majority in Congress will look around for new sources of revenue and their eyes will land on 401k accounts where billions of dollars of private money are “languishing”. In October Congressional hearings led by Rep. George Miller, D-CA proposed eliminating 80 billion dollars in tax brakes on existing 401k accounts by moving money from tax deferred to taxed accounts. This is all smoke and mirrors of course because the tax on these account is paid when the money is withdrawn and depending on how the legislation is written could result in taxes being paid twice on the same account. The Democrats are ever resourceful in their search for other people’s money. I have also heard rumblings of designs on the billions of dollars that University and College Trust Funds have “languishing” in their accounts.
While all this is going on the Democrats stated assault on the Constitution will begin. Although, “I have always believed that an individual has a right own a gun,” further gun laws will be implemented. (“The 2nd Amendment guarantees the right to own a gun but it says nothing about ammunition.”) The so called “Fairness Doctrine” will be reinstituted and taxes and regulation will be placed on the internet to further stifle dissent. (1st Amendment) Dozens of lower court Judges and perhaps as many as three Supreme Court Judges will be appointed who will rule not on the law and judicial precedent but on how they feel about the issues, or empathy for those poor or minority people who come before the court. (“These are the type of Judges I will appoint.”) Is this not the epitome of Judicial Activism and Legislating form the bench?

At some point I would also expect an attempt to repeal the 22nd Amendment.

In the area of foreign policy I believe that Vice President Joe Biden is correct in his assumption that the new President will be tested and found wanting. Where and by whom I don’t know but I can think of several scenarios. Perhaps the Israelis will strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, a move they deem vital to their continued existence. How will a President Obama react to such a move? Would he continue to support Israel or abandon the only real allies we have in the area? Perhaps Russia will make further moves into countries of the old USSR as they have done in Georgia. How would a President Obama deal with that when he has previously only called for restraint on the part of Russia? Perhaps the Chinese would find this an opportune time to settle their claims on Taiwan. Would a President Obama go to the aid of a country that we have long said we would defend? What if Kim Jung Ill decided to reunite the Koreas? And what will he do in Iraq where he has said he would pull out immediately, or set a time table for pulling out, or pull out when the situation on the ground warrants or...
Will he and his Vice President continue to push Obama’s "Global Poverty Act" (S.2433) through the Congress? The legislation would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product per year on UN foreign aid, which amounts to a phenomenal 10 year total of $845 billion over and above what the U.S. already spends.
In August Barack Obama referred to himself as a citizen of the world. In light of that and the above proposed legislation it seems to me he is willing to subvert American Foreign Policy to the whims of an Anti American UN that already gets over 25% of its support from the USA.
What will a President Obama, in the middle of the war on terror, do regarding the military? Will he make the devastating cuts that he promised early in the campaign or increase the over all troop numbers by 40,000 as he said last week? Time will tell.

If I have this straight, most of you are aching for "revenge" because people objected to being screwed by Bush for the last 7-1/2 years (I'm not rich). And how will you get this revenge?

Why, we'll go back to PLAN A and treat Pres. Obama the same way that we did Pres. Clinton: a continuous stream of paranoid accusations backed up with zero evidence, hoping for an ever-expanding "investigation" that will convince normal folks that the bullshit is real. Maybe Scaife will even finance this fantasy trip again.

Or you could grow up and accept that: (a) you started this BS back in 1992, (b) Bush is at best a retard and at worst a crime family leader, and (c) your kind of "patriotism" has nearly destroyed this country. Grow up!

P.S.: You don't seem to win very often by running geezers like Dole and McSame. True, it worked with Reagan (one trick pony, I'd say).

P.S.S.: I support equal rights for Fundo-Americans, no more or less. Even the right to whine!

viewfromafar,

Governments don't have to run healthcare to have universal coverage, they can give the population vouchers to get their own medical insurance in the private sector, that would be my personal choice, a bit like John McCains plan I think.

Sad to hear about that guy in Tarn et Garonne, it's true that the Slovenian economy has been doing very well over the past few years though, it's a great little country in many ways, i'd recommend a visit there if you ever get the chance.

Link if you like, my french is pretty good so it's not a problem, just don't link anything in german or I won't have a clue! lol.

Jonsey, you aren't telling the whole story! American medical expenses are greater because the malpractice insurance of US doctors is outrageous, as you can sue a doctor for coughing when you're in his office...you are throwing around a bunch of empty statistics, without explaining what the figures cover, (for instance, are deficits included in these sums-doubt it-I believe that it's what is spent in the government's budget that is quoted) who is covered (insurance in the US usually covers wife/husband/kids or whatever is legal, since you like to be PC, whereas here in france everyindividual adult is covered separately and taxed separately)so be careful of what you are comparing, there are advantages and disadvantages both here and in the US. However I will have a very hard time ever believing that the best choice for the world is when government's run healthcare...and your point is well taken the US is incapable of having low-cost healthcare, whether it's run by the government or by private insurance companies. And US salaries tend to be pretty high especially when you compare them to France.

ANd now for something completely different: this morning on the radio there was some guy in the Tarn -et-Garonne(a French department) that works for an American company(Modec, or something like that) has a plant here in France that is moving to Slovenia, and guess what: its the horribly typical greedy capitalistic Americans and Barrack Obama didn't save this guys job, and the worst part is the balance sheet showed a profit...nothing has changed, and we Americans aren't going to be better liked, so much for that argument shot down out of the sky-and no time won't heal this at all, I can't link as everyhting is in french, but my husband told me a French pundit on TF1 yesterday was trying to point out the obvious that Obama is the President of the United States and at some point maybe the Europeans have got to give up that the Americans aren't going to act first in their own best interests. And to further start my day off great, I heard similar complaints three times on this radio station this morning( my husband insists on this station, I change it, he changes it back) Needless to say, it's going to be a long 4 years)

Susan says

"And what about the quality of services?

After socialized medicine takes place your numbers will look like this

USA 28840
Luxembourg 4851
Norway 3647

Why you are so against the fact that there could be a country that uses a different system?

You have no ground to say that socialized medicine is “better”. It is probably the right choice for a number of countries for several reasons, but there is NOT a single reply that is good for everybody.

You didn’t convince me"

I'm not saying that every country has to use the same system, it's the American people who have voted for it, even John McCain was campaigning for a form of socialised medicine.

You're not convinced, that's your right, i'm just presenting the facts that say the US system is by far the world's most expensive and that those countries that provide universal taxpayer funded care have much lower bills.

You didn’t convince me”

I’m not saying that every country has to use the same system, it’s the American people who have voted for it, even John McCain was campaigning for a form of socialised medicine.

You’re not convinced, that’s your right, i’m just presenting the facts that say the US system is by far the world’s most expensive and that those countries that provide universal taxpayer funded care have much lower bills.

Here is another "simple minded epithets or lie" that I can throw around, mainly for Horace but please feel free to jump on the bandwagon.

Did you know that if the One applied for a government job that required a security clearance, he would have been rejected on the grounds of past associations and admitted drug use? And you all picked this idiot as your President.......nice..........
