The Obama Campaign’s Credit-Card Crack-up
The disabled components involved are part of what is known as the “AVS” (Automated Verification System). Many bloggers and blog commenters have confirmed the accuracy of the just-excerpted claims, including the fact that the merchant has to take proactive steps to rewrite or disable existing programming and controls to make AVS not work.
This information would indicate that Team Obama does not know (or pretends not to know; that would be for investigators to determine) who specifically has donated much of its campaign money — and the fact that they don’t know is deliberate.
Further, the lack of controls in Obama’s campaign-contribution system enables the use of prepaid cards, which if paid for in cash, are more than likely completely untraceable without going back to store video recordings, most of which are discarded or overwritten after a short time.
From all appearances, in both cases — unverified credit-card and prepaid-card contributions — it is very likely that the Obama campaign couldn’t refund monies received even if it wanted to. Donations to Obama are making it to statements of cardholders who never authorized them. The only people who might get their money back are the ones who catch the charges. And what about charges to stolen or forged cards?
Despite many tests, no one has been able to show that these material control weaknesses exist in the McCain-Palin contributions system.
Meanwhile, though space doesn’t permit fully chronicling the specifics, America’s mainstream Obama-mad media has been negligent in covering this astonishing story, either failing to report it at all (which Clay Waters of NewsBusters has noted is the case at the New York Times), or blandly understating the severity and, if you will, audacity of the enterprise (Washington Post, October 25 and October 28; National Journal).
If this were John McCain’s campaign, a deafening “what did he know and when did he know it?” chorus would have begun well over a week ago.
As it is, most voters have cast or will cast their presidential ballots totally unaware of what may very well be the largest and most highly-organized campaign-finance fraud in U.S. elections history.
As they do, they should be asking, “What did Obama know and when did he know it?”
Hey, on this one, I don’t want to be a hypocrite. I mean, I don’t believe in any limits on campaign spending. It’s called Free Speech. And all is fair is business and politics. I don’t want to say “You can’t spend as much as you want or raise as much as you want or give as much as you want.” because that will come back to hurt us in the long run.
So, this is not valid criticism in my book. I believe in free markets and free speech, in and out of elections. Just like in business, if your competitor is beating your ass, don’t go crying to the government to restrict your opponent; just go out and compete and either win, lose or draw.
If McCain is raising less money than BHO, maybe it’s because he made some strategic errors early on. And maybe it’s up to us to send McCain more money or use 527′s better.
Let’s not play into liberal hands by whining about being behind in money. That’s sounding like a liberal loser.
It appears that there is the basis for a vigorous investigation into these charges. I’m not saying that Barak Obama is personally directing efforts to circumvent the law, but he is responsible for any possible criminal wrongdoing by members of his campaign staff.
If Senator Obama is not elected, the questions become moot. If he is elected, with a Democrat controlled Congress under Reid and Pelosi, the question is also moot, but for different reasons.
In the first case, it would be a waste of taxpayer money to investigate an ineffective attempt to “buy” an election. In the second, well, if you can’t figure it out by yourself, you shouldn’t be allowed to vote due to being intellectually challenged.
Well, as was so often stated by Obama, the Obama people and supporters, Obama’s running of the presidential campaign shows he has the executive experience to be President.
This rest solely on Obama and not some staffer. When the problems were made public, the leader of the Obama campaign did nothing to halt the collections and therefore has given the process his approval.
Obama is intentionally cheating on credit card processing. The media should be demanding the IP address from every donor, in addition to the name, address, city, state and zip. IP addresses can be “reverse lookedup” to determine without doubt the actual country the computer making the donation. Anyone who runs a competent web site collects this information to prevent fraud.
Frankly, I’m surprised his processor and merchant account bank are allowing this kind of behavior, where they turn off the AVS (Address Verification Service) and accept clearly illegal donations.
Because some of these transactions unquestionably violate U.S. law (donations made by non-U.S. citizens and donations in excess of the legal limit), they also violate the credit card agreements they had to sign. I don’t know of any processor that permits illegal activities in connection with their services. There are any number of laws being violated here, possibly the Patriot Act.
These companies are definitely in Obama’s pocket, after all, they are regulated banking businesses that will continue to operate under an Obama administration. We’ve witnessed what happens to people who go against The One.
Great article. This is the unreported story of the century. How a candidate stole an election through untraceable foreign and fraudulent contributions. Nearly half of Obama’s historic haul is probably illegal.
And no mainstream outlet cares.

Like John the Baptist, I too have been crying in the wilderness: “Obama is not honest. He is bad for the country. Do not buy into his calculated crap.”
I did the same thing, donating $10 to Obama in the name of Robert E. Lee, Confederate General. I was thanked, and a couple of days later it cleared my credit card account. A similar attempt at the McCain website was immediately rejected.
It proves a truth about campaign finance laws — they are excellent things for those who intend to pay no attention to them. I wonder where the money came from that got the Obama buzz machine going in the first place.

Nothing surprises me anymore with the ever honest Obama. What ever he does, whoever he knows is somehow involved in shady things. He makes my skin crawl. I’m with you on wanting a free-wheeling system of political donations. That still doesn’t mean I can’t be suspicious when a candidate literally throws the door wide open for fraud, as Obama has done.
The fact here is simple, no reputable merchant should accept a transaction where the name, billing address, and CVV Code don’t match. Period. Even with these practices in place, credit card fraud happens. Yet the Obama campaign can’t be bothered with even this. Instead, they take donations from any valid card number and perform no other security checks.
Being the type to be suspicious of such actions, I believe some sort of fraud is taking place, designed to not only circumvent the law, but to get money from people who don’t support Obama. I can see no other reason for tossing out basic credit card security.

Hillary brought up the same complaints about the Obama contribution schemes when she was running against him. In that instance they found many $2K contributions from non-English speaking Chinese working at a laundromat. And the MSM brushed it aside as they do now.
George Soros spoke at MIT the other day supporting a suspension of the constitution to fix the financial crisis. Loose contribution accounting could certainly have been used by George to put in more money to assure victory. George is a big Obama booster.
So the way the US gets toppled:
1) Bin Laden for a few million bucks creates war on terror
2) GWB mishandles enough of the response to create an anti-republican backlash
3) The democrats elect the most left leaning politician to ever run for the white house and he and his pals suspend the constitution and in essence wipe out America.

I work in the banking industry. I would find out what bank or credit card company is processing these fraudulent card transactions without even attempting to verify the donor’s name, address, etc. I would then go after the bank/credit card company for not following normal debit/credit card mandated proceedures. In the meantime, (if the Obama campaign hasn’t by now shredded the donor’s information) I would send the FBI after them.

Obama started his campaign with a lie, right out of the gate when he refused to accept funding after promising John McCain he would. He let McCain accept public financing then pulled an end around, using weasel words as to his reasons for backing out. I would not support Obama if I thought there was any reasonable evidence that he was breaking the law. I don’t have a lot of extra money, nor do my friends, but we’ve all contributed around $10 a few times since the primary season began.
The thing is, we often get this sort of hearsay stories in the few days before the election. People get desperate and try things that are just not believable at all – that is, unless you reeeeally want to believe them. I’ve read so many bizarre conspiracy theories on this website that I hardly notice them anymore.
This all seems a bit over-the-top. Presumably a system that relies on automatically checking the addresses on file with the credit card companies with the addresses people enter to check credit cards will throw up a bunch of false negatives. If you want to avoid turning legitimate donors away it would make sense to turn it off. You can criticize Obama’s campaign for being irresponsible in prioritizing reducing barriers to legitimate donors giving him money over preventing fraud, but that isn’t evidence that Obama’s doing anything crooked. (If there was no legitimate reason to turn off these checks why would the credit card companies’ systems let people do it?)
And the stuff about non-whole-dollar donations is getting really silly. There are plenty of reasons for people to give non-whole-dollar donations. Some people do this to indicate which website or group they were encouraged to donate by. And even if it did show that people were transferring money from overseas, that doesn’t prove that they’re not US citizens. Believe it or not, some US citizens work outside the US.

I am one of the authors of this blog. Myself and other internet professionals launched the site given the highly irregular and unethical decision by the Obama camp to turn off AVS.
Does it really matter? Surely the American people are not dumb enough just to vote for the guy who advertises the most?

We’d all like to think that the internet and card processors have this slick modern software that was built recently and incorporates all Sarbanes-Oxley and PCI compliance built in from the git-go.
The facts are, and I’m an insider, PCI and SOX compliance are lied about on a daily basis. The code running most processors is ANCIENT, written in languages like COBOL or RPG. The web checks you so willingly assume MUST be in place BECAUSE, just are not. AVS was an ADD-ON to a CORRUPT, UNAUDITABLE system.
Thus, the very fact that AVS is off, talks of extreme complicity between CARD PROCESSORS and THE CAMPAIGN.
A basic audit would find NON-PCI-COMPLIANCE, to which the remedy is a re-audit next year. A little too late to do much. Dontchathink?

PCIGUY, I tried googling AVS, and turned up lots of pages of ordinary vendors turning off AVS to avoid problems with valid cards being rejected. For example, the poster on this thread says they were advised by their credit card processor to turn off AVS “to allow for the smooth processing of gift credit cards during increased holiday shopping”.

I have heard two news reports of theft from accounts being sent as camapaign contributions to Obama.
One was in England, where a woman’s account was cleaned out and the money sent to Obama electronically.
The other was from the U.S. where a man found a credit card charge for a contribution to Obama.
This is extraordinary. I have never heard anything like this before.

Since you guys love to cite sources that are anything but unbiased, I have to take everything with skepticism. If the only people reporting something are right-wing extremist websites, then what does that tell you?
Yes – Obama has a lot of donations. Record amounts. For the first time, a democrat out-raised a republican. And your response? He must have cheated to do it. I’m not disputing that Obama has received a LOT of money. I’m disputing your soft claim that there is something illegal happening. Just because the records aren’t there doesn’t mean that something illegal took place. It’s a possibility, but there’s also the possiblity that McCain is actually a Martian bent on destroying the planet earth.
You guys love to allege things that can’t be proved or disproved. It’s a novel trick, and you are certainly well-practiced.
As for calling me a troll, didn’t we move past this? When I insulted you, I apologized. If you have any decency, you should do the same.

There’s so much of this going on, one wonders if it’s meant as much to throw our election process and aftermath into confusion and chaos as it is to help Obama get elected.

Anyway, go search the Obama contributions yourself, and see the number of odd amounts that reflect currency conversions. Perhaps try a bogus donation. This can be proven to even your own satisfaction. Don’t take our word for it. Proof and sources have been provided in many places. If you don’t accept them, then disprove them. Until then, the proof proffered stands, and your arguments to the contrary lack any meaning.

I feel like I can’t afford to have a foot in the republican party for this election. Things seem to have gotten too insane – too bitter – too paranoid – too desperate – too irrational. Nobody can truly be centrist because when you walk into the booth, you vote right or you vote left.
I can only hope that the craziness ends by 2012. If there is a reasonable, moderate republican, I will most definitely consider voting for him/her.
My main issue is that PJMedia has run so few substantive stories. It’s become an extremist center for some of the most bizarre ideas that I’ve read. I don’t believe everything Huffington Post tells me, but at least they have some stories that are straight-up reporting, as opposed to total opinion-journalism.
