The Mosab Yousef Saga: Did Hamas ‘Defector’ Dupe All of Us?
While a prisoner of Israel in 1996, Mosab Hassan Yousef — the son of Sheik Hassan Yousef, a founding member of Hamas — was approached by Shin Bet agents who looked to recruit him to spy within Hamas. He agreed. Mosab’s information soon had Shin Bet calling him “the most reliable source in the Hamas leadership,” and Israeli lives were undoubtedly saved as a result of Mosab’s collaboration.
Despite this success, Yousef has since revealed himself to be more double agent than turncoat.
During the initial contact within Israel’s Maskubia (Jerusalem’s central prison), Mosab agreed to collaborate in exchange for Israel not targeting his father. After years of providing valuable intelligence, in 2007 Mosab declared his conversion to Christianity, moved to California, and went public with his story. His tale was a sensation, drawing attention and praise from U.S. pro-Israel organizations. But his tale has since been revealed to be a “long con,” the evidence coming from when he speaks publicly in Arabic.
Mosab did not convert to what the West would recognize as Christianity, but to a fiery, Palestinian brand of the faith that is vehemently anti-Israel. According to Mosab, his main goal in coming to the U.S. is to infiltrate the main source of international support for Israel: the American church. From an interview with Al-Arabiya:
During my tours in universities and even churches, [I found] the real support for Israel stems from the church in the West. … We need to understand the difference between “revenge” and “resistance” and once the Palestinians do, we will have our victory against Israel.
Activists like Mosab know very well that Western media rarely translate their doublespeak. He continues:
Israel is the problem and as an occupation it needs to end. … There are many ways to do this besides the coward explosive operations.
Mosab’s formula? Infiltrate the West with his book:
This will be the first time in history that a Palestinian book will find success so that the Western reader can see for himself the reality of what goes on over there. People in the West do not know what happens over there.
On the Arabic-language show Daring Question, Mosab wore the symbol of pro-Palestine advocates, the kaffiyeh:
With a balanced approach I discuss the life of the Palestinian child under the Israeli occupation, of course my life suffered under all the problems of murder and the criminal operations that were carried out by the Israeli occupation against my people, my family, myself, and against humanity.
To Mosab, the Palestinian struggle was lacking: while he praises Hamas leaders as “heroes and glorious defenders,” he instructs them to enlist more educated political defenders like himself:
With regret, our great leaders and mighty heroes and glorious defenders over there did not realize that instead of spending their wealth and monies on silly issues, they needed to enlist in their ranks writers and educated individuals in order to reverse the image of the Palestinian struggle.
Mosab stated that he is only against Hamas methodology, but not their agenda:
It appeared at first that my desire was to seek revenge against Hamas. … How could I do such a thing … revenge [against] my own father? He is one of the leaders of Hamas.
Perhaps the most shocking revelation: Mosab asks Arabs not to report terrorist activity. The host of Daring Question asked a caller:
If you were in Mosab’s position and have two choices: either someone from Hamas will be killed, or school children in a bus will be killed, will you report it?
The Arab Christian caller vacillated, then Mosab spoke:
If I was in your shoes, you should not report it to Israel. I do not encourage anyone to give information to Israel or collaborate with Israel. If anyone hears me right now and they are in relation to Israeli security I advise them to work for the interest of their own people — number one — and do not work with the [Israeli] enemy against the interest of our people. They should collaborate with the Palestinian Authority only.
Mass deportations and closing the door to immigration and very tight visa controls will end this problem.
Even medieval morons would have had the sense to do it. America will never do it because we are polite and orderly to the point of suicide and have come to worship the Constitution like it is the be-all and end-all, the ship we captains will go down with right to the bottom of the ocean.

I have a personal, front row seat to the the mind and ministry of Mosab Yousef, and have never heard him stray from his message of finding love at the foot of the cross. I do not know if they met face to face, but they both spoke at a Strategic Perspectives conference in April 2009 at a church in Franklin, TN. I heard both of them speak and was very impressed with both. Mosab’s story is quite a bit more dramatic and compelling, but Walid also seemed just as sincere. I am quite disturbed by this article – one of these men is being dishonest while proclaiming themselves as Christian.

I read the book. From the start, it felt wrong to me. He never took any real moral stand, didn’t pass the Christian sniff test for me, and described an israel policy i did not believe was real.

Mosab’s Shin Bet handler risked his own life and career to vet Mosab’s story. They both believe there is a better way than the way of their father’s – for peace in the middle east. Mosab believes that way is Christ – to “love your enemy” was a concept that, at first, blew him away. But God’s love filled him and he loves people above and beyond anyone else I know. He is a blessing and a much better person than I. I am having a really hard time trying to love Walid Shoebat after this vicious attack on a wonderful man.

“Showing contradictions” in a story may be halfway to “proving a fraud,” but the mere existence of contradictions is not, of itself, proof. And, if Shoebat’s backstory is, well, spongy, one nonetheless cannot fault him on his actual support for Israel.
Shoebat may be defending his “franchise” from competition, but his claims about Yousef’s Arabic statements and the nature of Yousef’s brand of Christianity can be independently checked by those with the proper familiarity of Arabic.

He never asked me to provide evidence. Jorge Loykin also desires to reverse the law in Germany regarding prosecuting Holocaust denial. The Christian Edition of the Jpost refused to publish his article and he slipped it through the Features edition who regretted publishing it and in fact provided me the chance to debunk it. Have you read my refutation of it? Of course not.

The desire of his heart is to live in Jerusalem, and many of his closest friends are Jews – one he calls his “Jewish Mother” and he loves her deeply. This is slander at its worst. Linda, this is being taken out of context – because Mosab is preaching Christ, not occupation. I have personally met Mosab’s “Jewish Mother” and his best friend, who is also a Jew. Walid is leading you all down a false, dangerous path – I don’t know why except that his coffers are dry and he needs to stir up business and wants to use Mosab’s to do so. It is breaking my heart to read his slander.
I have a theory to explain what’s been going on with Mosab. It could be totally off base, but if human nature works the way I believe it does, there may very well be some truth to it. Your comments in response are welcome.
Let’s assume that Walid’s has correctly translated Mosab’s interview/s in Arabic. Can we also not assume that even if Mosab exaggerated some things in his book (which I read), the essence of it is still true ((i.e., he did in fact work with the Israelis Intelligence Agents and in so doing saved Israeli/Jewish lives)?
If Mosab’s fundamental points regarding spying for Israel are true, then his family relationships are permanently broken and he obviously would be blacklisted in Arab/Palestinian circles. Consequently, he’d have to be on guard 24/7 to protect himself from being murdered.
He’s still a relatively young man, and perhaps he misses his family/friends and has some regrets about all that’s happened–or is mad at Israel and/or the United States for not supporting him enough once he went public. In such a state of cognitive confusion, these Arabic interviews could be a desperate ploy to become accepted once again in his old circles. Unfortunately for him, once he crossed the proverbial “rubicon” to work for the Israelis, there is nothing he can “say” (short of an “action” such as blowing himself and a congregation of Jews up in a synagogue)that will change the hearts and minds of Israeli-hating Arabs–who will always view him as an infidel and even worse, as a traitor.
He seems stuck in a quagmire of own making (although he probably shirks responsibility and instead views himself as a helpless “victim”) and must be suffering a great deal. I hope that over time, he can develop some inner peace and accept what’s happened in his life.
The bottom line is that given the unforgiveable sins that he’s already committed in the eyes of Palestinians and Arabs, I have a hard time believing that he’s some sort of double agent, or just another genetically wired dishonest Arab.
The fact is that the understandable reasons why he turned on his fellow Arabs may be temporarily lost to him–or for whatever reason not seem as signficant as they once did–either of which can only add to his cognitive dissonance and internal confusion/regrets. Rather than condemning him then, perhaps we should pray for him—or at least give him the benefit of the doubt at this time.
Perhaps you’re on to something. I’m not particularly trusting nor am I shocked or even surprised by much nowadays. This revelation, however, comes to me with shock and some disbelief. That’s not a reflection of my opinion of Walid Shoebat. Instead, I find this hard to accept because, in his video interviews from last year, I can see in his eyes that glow of joy that all former Muslim Christian converts seem to have. In the newer clip (linked to above), he doesn’t have that glow anymore but he doesn’t have that mad, demon-possessed look in his eyes that’s so common to jihadists, either. (Former Muslim converts to atheism are happy people; former Muslim Christian converts are downright joyous people. Who can blame them? The weight of Islam, allah and all that come with it must be crushing.)
I thought maybe he’s backsliding, as new Christian converts will do, especially young adults who are new to making the big decisions for themselves. Also, as hideous and hate-filled as it is, he was taught Islam from birth and teachings from birth are hard to shake, especially religious teachings. Even when we know on an intellectual level that those teachings are BS, separation from them and acting in opposition to them is difficult on an emotional level, sometimes even causing a lot of guilt and fear when they’re religious beliefs we’ve left behind.
Anyway, I hope for his sake and for the sake of those here in the US who know him personally and have supported him that he’s only waffling and a little lost, wandering off the past. Then it’s possible for him to find his way back into the light. If he’s a double agent, on the other hand, then he can wander back into whatever sh*thole in the desert from whence he slithered.

Let’s not lose sight of the fact that the federal government tried to deport him back to the Palestinians not even a year ago. The reason: he “supported terrorism” even though the “material support” he gave Hamas was while he was an Israeli agent under Israeli direction.
While the Israelis did send a few pleas on his behalf while he was detained pending deportation like another day laborer from Mexico, it doesn’t sound like Israel really had his back either such as making it clear that Israel would grant him asylum if deported.

Dear Walid, I wish you were prime minister of Israel. I lived in Israel between 1981 and 1991, and Israel’s main problem is NOT the Arabs, but the Jewish liberal Left, as you well know. My ex-wife, leftist herself, was a social worker at Ayalon (Ramle) prison. I used to live in Beersheba, work in a plant outside Sderot, and my ex-father in law used to take his car into Gaza for routine maintenance and repairs before the first intifada broke out and changed everything. My ex-mother in law, an ob-gyn in SOroka hospital in Beersheba, brought 10,000 Bedouin babies into this world. 1-I am refused entry. Yet when I pleaded with an article to enter, I sent it to the Jerusalem Post. What did they do? They contacted a liberal jerk to examine the case and what he did was publish the article in the Jpost that questioned my terror activity. Such an article began to create rumors about me that I was a “fraud”.
Truth is that frauds get the red carpet until they are caught–in the end.

Yes, I know the HORROR of the Israeli bureaucracy, and not only does the left hand not know what the right hand is doing, it doesn’t even CARE! But the stupidity and horror of bureaucracy in Israel is a whole ‘nother subject.
But legally, there is no bar for a Muslim or an Arab or a Christian becoming PM of Israel, as far as I know. Of course you would have to become a citizen first. You don’t have to be born in Israel to be elected PM or appointed president.
And when I lived in ISrael, my best friends were missionaries and even Jewish converts to Christianity. Israel has LOADS of them. My best friend was a convert, or “Messianic Jew” who came with his Evangelical Tennessee wife, and they had and raised five beautiful, lovely children who are now full grown and have served in the IDF. They love and would never leave the country. I presume they are either permanent or temporary residents who get their visas renewed.
I sincerely wish it were possible, because I believe you would be the best candidate of any I know in Israel. You tell it like it is, and how it should be told. You know the real score over there, and what the mentality of our half-brothers and cousins whose misguided Muslim upringing has unfortunately taught them to hate and seek vengeance for any real or perceived slight. Have you spoken to Mosab about this to confront him and get the truth out. that would go so much further to putting this to rest. I like Mosab a lot having met him in Israel and spoken to him in the US. Obviously, many want to know the bare knuckle truth about this, including his own friends in Israel/West Bank.
THis is vicious slander against a wonderful man, Mosab Hassan Yousef. I have known him a long time and know all he has every told me to be true. I know his Shin Bet handler, who risked his own life and freedom to verify that Mosab’s story was true. Mosab is the real person you would have met – genuine and a true Christ-follower. Peace will only come at the foot of the cross – that is what his message always is – peace through the love of Jesus. Mosab loves people – Jews, Arabs, Americans – even Christians, who, like Walid Shoebat, can sometimes be hardest to love. He is not political – his agenda is taken out of context when you are looking at it like that. Walid Shoebat is a false prophet – one we were told to be aware of in the last days.

You ask if I have spoken to Mosab. No I have not personally spoken to him but I have sent Zakaria Izzat an Egyptian convert who is also pro-Israel to communicate with him. He did and he attempted to reason with him but found Mosab’s heart hardened.

We are also to expose the works of darkness dear. What you advocate is silence for the sake of wishful thinking. It is not our job to change people. As I said, I am not a heart surgeon. This article is quite eroneous. I have seen for myself documents from the Knesset declaring Mosab to be a vital asset as a spy for them. Why would Israel, the most advanced country in the world in the area of counter-terrorism intelligence – allow themselves to be duped by a spy?
Regardless of the claims made in this article, Mosab has unequivocally supported the state of Israel’s right to exist and not be attacked by Palestinians – both in Arabic and English – which I have witnessed personally. He may not fit the American concept of a “Christian” but then many who take their faith seriously do not and he is not asking to be a model for the Christian faith. He has also unequivocally condemned suicide bombings and other tactics used by Palestinians to attack Israel, Jews and Christians, something which most dubious organizations and people will never do. He has stated clearly that he believes Islam to be the think which is imprisoning the Palestinian people, not Israel, and that if they reconsider their beliefs, they will be able to forgive their enemies and live peacefully among them.
I am sorry that so many people believe these allegations without knowing the facts, but having been involved in this case and reviewed the materials myself, it is clear that the author has a bone to pick and should be more careful of defaming a person’s character and reputation in this way.
I agree, Tina, that Mosab was an asset for the Shin Bet. His conversion is authenitc. The Israelis stood up for him when the US was going to deport him. I met Mosab at a Christian gathering in Northern California. I am a Jew, myself, but having read his book I was curious to see the author in person. He came off as being very authentic. He is a great opponent to Islam as a religion. He believes normative Islam itself is the problem. He said things that Muslims would consider blasphemous about Mohammed. From what I understand from Yousef’s book, and your claims here, is that he is a Christian and only wants what is best for his people. I know he hates the killing on *both* sides, as we all do. I may disagree with his views to remove Israel (if that’s even true), but at least he want’s to do it in a peaceful way. At least he understands the dangers of Islam as you do. He appears to be working to fight it as a God-fearing, Christ-loving human being being and I believe does not deserve to be defaced in this way.

I don’t know the motives Mosab has acted upon: whether he was all the way a double agent, or if he had a change of heart, or if he got scared on account of threats. Because he said terrible things about Islam in the past, and collaborated with the Mossad, maybe we only implied that he was a friend of Israel. He always seemed sincere in his speechee, and yes, very enthusiastic about the conversion. In the beginning of the process, we heard him say that he was impressed by the Christian teaching “Love thy enemy”. We implied that in due time, learning more about the situation, he also stopped seeing in Israel an enemy.
Anyway, this intervew came as a disappointment to me – I’ve always before put him in the same line with Nonny Darwish, Walid Shoebat, Hamid Tawfic, Brigitte Gabriel, Ali Ayan Hirshi, etc. But according to the translation, he does refer to Israel as the enemy and suggests for the Palestinians to be layal to their people and not to share with Israel knowledge about attempts of terror, but to inform instead the Palestinian Authority. Which, I would say, is not always so effective.

I’m really dissappointed, I was active in the whole internet/facebook campaign to prevent him from being deported LOL Now I really don’t care what happens to him. I am disheartened by this. It’s not the first time I’ve seen it. I had a group of Christians friend me on facebook and suddenly, they were spewing out all this stuff about Israeli occupation and that God was on the side of the Palestinians and would destroy Israel and I was like… “Are you reading the same Bible as me? Mosab, or Joseph’s (I prefer to use his Christian name) Shin Bet handler speaks out in his defense. Again. This man has essentially given up his career as a Shin Bet field agent in order to defend Joseph from being deported back to Israel, and assured death, by the Department of Homeland security. Now he steps forward to defend him again. If you believe, for a single moment, what Mr. Shoebat is saying, then you need to read that.
Personally, I think Shoebat knows and is afraid that Joseph could expose his fraud so is making the first strike to discredit him. Being a former Muslim himself, taqiyaa is a tool he may well use to advance his own agenda.

Gonen Ben Itzhak, Mosab’s handler was fired from the Shin Bet for financial mismanagement and for lying. Please refer to his own confession and what was discovered by Haaretz (Fri, 13, 2011). In fact MK Gideon Ezra and former deputy of the Shin Bet considers Mosab’s account as an “exaggeration” and his handler was kicked out by the Shin Bet coordinator.

1 Have you tried to contact him concerning this affair to ask what exactly he means with:”Israel is the enemy and as an occupation it needs to stop” or “then the palestinians will have their victory”. We tried to contact Mosab, he posts an email we sent him claiming that we attempted to recruit him for money. Fact is, we pay speakers all the time. We do not make a cent, its an expense for ministry work. Mosab can never prove that we would have made a cent and his claim that we were is simply unfounded. I am on record defending Mosab on radio and in churches throughout this nation even after his no-response to our email. I have no interest in destroying the man. I have sent Zak Izzat, a convert from Islam and an Israel supporter to contact him. Zak was quite disappointed with him. My assumption is that Mosab wanted nothing to do with us because we were Zionists. Mosab made it clear that he is no Zionist. 2-People are confused, Mosab speaks against Islam yet here I say that he hates Israel. They ask the question, how can he speak against Islam and be a phony. Walid, you say you have attempted to contact Joseph, yet he states he and anyone close to him have not received any sort of message from you prior to your accusations and attack on him.
And please do prove your own story. The more I read about how no one has been able to vet your claims, the more I wonder if this is more than a misunderstanding and something else far more sinister. Come on now. Walid didn’t say he contacted Mosab before publicating this story. He told that when he heard about Mosabs story he and his manager Keith were excited and wanted to speak to Mosab. Mosab rejected their invitation and wanted nothing to do with him. Thats what he said. This is what Mosab even tells in his own story.

Google Walid Shoebat – research for yourself. He has a long history of lying & there is much to be read on that. Now he is attacking two other wonderful men, Gonen and Ron Brackin because they support Mosab. He is shameless and dishonoring to the Lord. After reading all the comments, with an open mind toward both Walid and Mosab, it’s interesting to me that the supporters of Mosab have become more and more vicious in their defense of him. I find that very telling. The defenders of Walid (and Walid himself) exhibit a more Christ-like demeanor.
And what’s more – that email at the bottom of Mosab’s rebuttal to Walid was an example of mean-spiritedness. Nowhere was there an implication in the invitation to Mosab to speak at events for monetary gain for Walid. Nowhere. It was a simple invitation, with an assurance of payment, as anyone would expect to receive for their time. The fact that Mosab implicates monetary gain for Walid is a low blow and a dirty hit below the belt. It has nothing to do with the subject in question and the very fact of its being shown for all to see with the accusation of financial greed attached is duplicitous and nefarious. And why hasn’t Mosab ever responded to Walid? Never?
And one more thing – since when doesn’t a Christian of ANY race, or creed, report to responsible authorities when a school bus is going to be blown up?? That has nothing, nothing to do with race or nationality or politics! What sort of advice is that Mosab gave? NOT to report it to the authorities who could stop it? Are you kidding me? That’s sub-human! Christians save children! Always. Every time! I’m shocked that any Christian would give advice like that. Save yourself? Is that what we do? Really?
Mosab’s advice was to go to the Palestinian authorities or the U.S. and let them report it to Israel because a Palestinian reporting anything to Israel can be killed, legally, by any other Palestinian. You don’t understand the danger to these people – Mosab does and encouraged them to do the right thing – but safely for their own sake. Is that bad advice? I am furious at Walid for this public attack on a man I know to be the most loving person on this planet. He is a National Hero in Israel and has the documents to prove it. He saved countless lives – on both sides – because he read in the Bible to “love your enemies” and he does that well. He shames us all. Read through many posts. May I share my opinion:
Only God truly knows our hearts (Psalm 44:21; 1 John 3:20). I think that Brother Mosab is troubled and faces great difficulties in his life. I pray that he does not become bitter and I pray that God leads him. May God’s protection and blessings be upon him.
Brother Mosab knows the falsehood of Islam, (without a doubt) but does he know (and experienced) all the truth from the Bible? I was eager to hear him saying in one of the videos/interviews in these churches that he has received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, the greatest experience and the most wonderful gift from God to a believer . (with an evidence of speaking in other tongues as the spirit of God gives utterance, thus not speaking Arabic, Hebrew or English) I was not able to find it out. Being filled with the spirit of God would make all the difference. Does he even hear it being preached? (as we know faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17)
I also wish that he would hear that we Christians believe in tawheed (the Oneness of God) as the Moslems do, but that not allah is God (thank God, Brother Mosab knows this already), but that Jesus is the Almighty God. (for this subject, please google for Wheel of Prophecy, this is a tract with only Scriptures). It is grievous that many Christians reach out to Moslems and Jews with an unbiblical concept of God – the trinity. It is grievous that some women in these churches where Brother Mosab was being interviewed could learn from some Muslim women certain standards of holiness. (I am not talking about the headscarf) We must pray for the Muslims and should be at the same time a living epistle of Christ. Yes they are in spiritual darkness, but at the same time our light must shine bright, so they come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ and His holiness. I wonder what God can do with a zealous Taliban or Imam, when he comes to the full knowledge of truth? (and God does already great things through some of them, who already found Him). Are we also being zealous in our Heavenly Father’s business?
We also must pray for many churches, that they might turn to the true Gospel of Jesus Christ and this world will see a yet unseen revival. We live in a world that is ripe for harvest. It will happen, because Jesus loves mankind and is not a respecter of person. He has promised it in His word. (James 5:7; Haggai 2:9 and many more)
As the song goes:
