The New Leviathan, by David Horowitz and Jacob Laksin, overturns conventional wisdom about money and power in American politics, attacking the well-known myth that conservative lobby groups wield unparalleled clout. The myth holds that the relatively small “grass-roots” organizations on the side of the Democratic Party, putatively the party of the “the people,” are dwarfed by pro-Republican organizations speaking for Wall Street and the corporate elite. Allowing Democrats to claim moral legitimacy, this David-and-Goliath story has held sway for a long time, regardless of the massive wealth and old-money connections of many individual Democratic politicians: presidential nominee John Kerry’s jaw-dropping opulence went almost unmentioned by the mainstream media, as did the fact that Wall Street leaders raised 100 million dollars to support Barack Obama’s populist “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for” White House bid.
Subtitled “How the Left-Wing Money Machine Shapes American Politics and Threatens America’s Future,” Horowitz and Laksin’s new book demonstrates the reality behind the myth in this impressively documented study of the left-wing money machine. As they substantiate with riveting detail, a plethora of left-wing organizations, philanthropies, unions, and think tanks, the majority tax-exempt and government-funded, now make up a unique power bloc that in the past decade has undergone explosive growth. At a time when soft funding for political parties has been curtailed, this network now effectively controls Democratic candidates and the party agenda, having amassed a war chest far exceeding both the money in conservative coffers and that held by the Democratic Party itself.
The aim of this network, as the authors show with many examples, is not only to influence elections through indirect means such as Media Matters, which continuously campaigns against conservative ideas, but also to transform the fabric of American society through education initiatives, community organizing projects, lawsuits, harassment campaigns, and tireless attacks on conservative figures. Its over-riding purpose, following the Marcusean strategy of revolution by stealth, is to move radical ideas “from the political margins to the political mainstream” until they become official Democratic policy as well as an accepted part of public debate. Ideas that were once thought risibly extreme—that Islamists bent on America’s destruction are actually victims of American aggression, that unlimited access to abortion is a woman’s right—become respectable through repetition. Although the various Democrat-friendly foundations claim to seek an expanded democracy, many of them are hard-left rather than liberal-democratic in their orientation, and represent a dangerously determined alliance bent on fomenting class division, hobbling the capitalist system, and weakening American power.
Co-written by two of the most highly respected conservative commentators on the political scene today, The New Leviathan is a groundbreaking portrait of the left’s “tax-exempt resources,” with nearly a hundred pages of appendices identifying the comparative assets of conservative and progressivist groups. The authors show in hard figures how left-wing foundations financially outstrip the right by a factor of ten to one. In 2009, progressivist funds totaled a hefty 104.56 billion dollars. A single left-leaning philanthropy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, had an endowment of over 33 billion, which alone is three times the total of funds accessible to the 75 viable conservative groups. Leftist foundations, the authors show, are both dramatically richer and better organized than those on the right, with groups such as the Tides Foundation existing precisely to coordinate and support the phalanx of left-wing organizations. Tides has received money from the most venerable of American philanthropies, including the Rockefeller, Carnegie, Mellon, and Kellogg. When campaigning on individual public issues, the left swamps its opponents: for example, 117 progressivist organizations devoted more than 50% of their programs to supporting open borders and citizens’ rights for illegal aliens, with a total of 306.1 million dollars. They are opposed by only nine conservative organizations that address the illegal immigration agenda, with a comparatively small financial base of 13.8 million.
As they develop their thesis, Horowitz and Laksin focus on different aspects of the left-wing political machine, showing the depth and pervasiveness of foundations’ role—for example, in nurturing and funding Obama, first when he was a community organizer and then as a presidential candidate. Those who have had doubts about Obama’s formation as a creature of the left will almost certainly be convinced by the evidence amassed here. Organizations such as Project Vote, a registration drive targeting black voters for which Obama served as director, and the Annenberg Challenge, a Chicago school initiative focused on African-centered curricula for which he was chairman of the board, not only introduced him to the ideology and tactics of Saul Alinsky-style radicals, but also put him in contact with many of the extremists who would later assist him on his ascent to the White House and would become key policy advisors. These include the academic power couple associated with the Midwest Academy training center for radicals, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, unrepentant former Weather Underground terrorists.
The thesis of this book is more than spot on. It is a dead hit.
It is impossible to quantify the damage done by the left’s mega machine, a machine which operates out in the open, but does most of its damage behind closed doors.

Yes, I include them all — along with the suborned academic community, particularly in the sciences — in what I call “The Insane Left”. The insanity fundamentally stems from a rejection of any real meaning to life, generally expressed as a rejection of religion (and Islam is but a mimicry of religion, just a strategy for conquest, not for understanding among men); it is the rejection of any overarching meaning, and any absolute truth, that opens the path to their insane treatment of those they consider their enemies.
What I really hate about the Left is how it directs tax dollars to its cronies, who launder the money and put right back in the Left’s coffers.

This must surely be a very pointy and hit the nail book, which I’ll buy and read. David Horowitz is brilliant, erudite and a master in going under the skin of the Leftists and uncover them in all their evil aspects. The Leftists have had decades to prepare for the overtaking of Europe and the USA, through subtle subversion, infiltration in all key institutions, agencies and governments. All this will lead to a final WW (if the West wants it or not) because the evil forces, mainly from Russia, China and all Islamic countries and Leftists 5th column inside the West, are bound together by a common hate, envy and rage against the West. In my view, all anarchists are trapped in adolescent revolt that has never been transcended. Look at the rage culture that exists among the young.
Ron Paul is a constitutional minarchist (what they would have called a Republican 50-60 years ago), not an anarchist. He is one who believes the US consitution, though not perfect, should actually, you know, limit what those in the government can do.
There is a wide range among libertarians, with a few actual anarchists, quite a few anarchist-leaners (even some who say “I am an anarchist… but we should have these established procedures and organizations to adjudicate disputes, develop consensus on issues and publish their conclusions…” which sounds an awful lot like archy, i.e. government, to me), quite a few minarchists, and then there are the many “minarchist, except…” who pick and choose a few elements of unconstitutional over-bearing government thuggery which they support.
It is time for the band Rage Against the Machine to change their name to Raging FOR the Machine. I had started seeing bits and pieces of the truth, then the bigger picture started becoming clearer. My family’s business was recently subjected to a smear and slander article. After some digging I learned that the unethical journalist who wrote the article is deeply involved with these philanthropies and other elements of the machine. This trust fund bitch puts up the facade that she is fighting for the little people, but if that were the case why would she intentionally lie and smear a small family business that is the sole livelihood that provides for three small children. That is when I finally realized that the left only cares about children when it buys them votes or provides them with a photo-op. They would probably steal the last loaf of bread out of your toddler’s hands after they socially engineer your starvation. Once a faithful Democrat, I will never vote for the left again.
The Ford Foundation’s dangerous activity goes back to 1968 in NYC with its decentralization plan purporting to give control to local school districts within the huge city wide bureaucracy. Instead, radicals and hoodlums took over. They fired Jewish teachers in large numbers simply on the basis of ethnic/religious background and when a strike ensued the volume of anti semitic rhetoric was enormous. Officials of all kinds tried to explain away statements such as “Jewish teachers are poisoning black children’s minds” or actions such as parading a coffin at a protest with the words “Hitler should have burned you all”. Instead of supporting the efforts of union leader Al Shanker to expose the radicals and defend the right to due process, the media blamed Shanker for publicizing the anti-Semitism. Shades of media and governmental efforts to downplay anti Western, anti semitic and anti-Christian rhetoric and actions by the Islamist jihadis today.

Having dealt with unions for most of my working life and have seen and sometimes dealt with the environomentalists assaults on my state, I was well aware that the left was well-funded; whenever I walked into a room with “union leaders” I could rest assured that I was far and away the lowest paid person in the room. The book “The Blueprint” about the lefts assault on Colorado really opened my eyes to how pervasive and well-funded leftist foundations were and the extent to which they had essentially supplanted the Democrat Party as the Left’s driving political force.
If we can restore a legitimate federal government, we REALLY need to look at the tax-exempt status of many, many Left/Democrat front groups including the foundations. Even without control of the federal government, we need to look at the tax and campaign activity status of the front groups in the states. Just because a corrupt federal government gives some group tax exempt status doesn’t mean a state has to. The unions are actually simple, though the simple solution requires political courage, something lacking in most Republican officeholders. There is hardly a union in the Country that has a dues and record-keeping structure that passes constitutional muster, so it would be easy to cut off the dues stream to any union so long as you had an agressive AG and a governor willing to take the heat. Likewise, Republican state governments feed the hand that bites them with all sorts of grants and contracts to Left/Democrat front groups that don’t produce anything but political activity and campaign funds from laundered taxpayer money. Republicans won the battle but lost the war on out-sourcing of government functions; yes, you can outsource, but the company you outsource to is likely a Democrat front and they don’t have all them stinkin’ rules about political activity that the government has.
I’ll give this a read but I doubt it will bring any revelations since the very scary ground was already well plowed by The Blueprint. Perhaps the better known Horowitz will give the information wider distribution.
The progressvie collectivist state will mostl likely win out in the end. The right can only hold it at bay for so long as we are approach the 50% entitlement red line that Milton Friedman laid down as the tipping point from which we don’t get to turn back.
What I can’t help but wonder is how it is that people such as the Gates, Pritzkers (sp), Fords, MacArthurs, Pew decendants, Rockefellrs, the people in the top 10%, the Mahers, the Moore’s, the Baldwin’s, Academia Elites somehow think that their wealth and prestige will keep them above the fray when the Utopian Statists gain complete one party power and rule of the proletariat masses. Do they think that the Statist Elites will leave them alone, let them buy their way out or do they think that they will be given power positions in the new Utopia, All Of Them? A Position? Really?
I wonder, do any of these people know what happened to the wealthy and professional class, not to mention the Kulaks, not to the mention how the arts were coerced in Soviet Russia and if they do know why they would think it would be any different here? What about China?

This election will convince me more than any other where we are as a nation. If Obama is reelected, and Reid remains majority leader than I plan to just tune out politics forever because I consider all is lost. We will be subjected to Obamacare with the enforcement of the IRS for the remainder of our life thanks to our lazy electorate, If the american people cannot see now the hoax, and empty suit that is Barack Obama than it is hopeless.

We have come to the point where we are no longer one, but two nations, two cultural populations mutually irreconcilable. In times past, this would have lead either to civil war or to separation by migration. Nowadays the first is dangerous and the second impossible in a world crowded with even worse governments. Under a socialist, bureaucratic regime, will constitutionalists, traditionalists and “kulaks” become sullen, turn to escape in religion, intoxicants, or cyberfantasies? Try to live quietly among an impoverished but relatively unmolested family circle?
Of course, in time a regime of tyranny must consume itself, but that eventuality may come only generations in the future. Today old timers like myself (never very heroic even when I was younger) will comfort ourselves with nostalgia as we await the haven of death. Some younger patriots may risk danger, but most citizens–now subjects–will be reduced to a life of mere instinct, suffering miseries they no longer have the education even to identify.
We have Ward Cleaver running against Malcolm X. In 1960 Ward would be leading by 80 points, whereas today he is trailing by a couple. You must admit, our education system has done one hell of a job in half a century.
After Woodrow Wilson’s progressive two terms were finished it was called ‘back to normalcy’. Are things ever going to be normal again?

Of course it is ridiculous to think that ALL of the wealthy Leftists are going to get cabinet appointments. You simply have to question the sanity of those wealthy Democrat supporters that just imagine they are going to be unaffected if the Far Left actually takes over. Chances are much better that they will relive the fates of the Russian aristocracy and capitalist class: they’ll be shot or flee into foreign exile and their homes will be given to the top Democrats, just as the Russian millionaires and nobles lost their homes and possessions to the Bolsheviks.
Mind you, some of the millionaires were allowed to keep their mansions in a manner of speaking: they were forced to subdivide them and let families of the poor into their homes. The millionaires however were NOT in charge of the whole house, just one small apartment in it. The film Dr. Zhivago depicts this phenomenon.
It will be interesting but depressing to say “I told you so” to the wealthy Democrat supporters in a few years as they lose everything and wonder what happened….

If you’re wondering what drives these folks, look no further than W Cleon Skousen. Most of you may remember him for penning “The Five Thousand Year Leap” that was hawked by everyone’s favorite carnival barker, Glenn Beck.
What is not too readily known were two earlier works of his, “The Naked Communist” and “The Naked Capitalist”. Communist was an insight into the pathology of why the left became what it is today and why it still holds on to its Marxist Leninist ideals. Capitalist was actually a book review of Dr Carrol Quigley’s work “Tragedy and Hope” in which Quigley all but sang the praises of the network alluded to in Leviathan and why it was in humanity’s best interests to submit to it.
Communist was written in 1963 and Capitalist was written in 1970. What this means is that we’ve got a lot of catching up to do since we gave them this much of a head start.

Americans would do well to heed cries sounding around them. These cries are Americas coming crisis. It started back in the 1900′s and Progressivism’s cancer continued to spread.
“Incrementalism” began (in earnest) after the 60′s revolutionary failure. A more cadenced approach of “Bottom up/Top down and Inside out” began to evolve and take shape. This revolutionary “back-door approach” movement was only able to propagate itself thru “Dot.com’s” rise-and-fall during early 2000′s.

This hyper organized Progressive, national and international movement caught Americans literally flat-footed, immobilized and without any plan whatsoever. “Social media” dominated (need proof? How’s about “Anonymous.com” hackers group? and Obama’s 2008 election?).
OH! GOP tried a “Contract For America,” got them elected, then went up in smoke.
Enter affable Carter, “feel-your-pain” Clinton and now Obama and “Transformation.”
At first, Americans suspected an Obama administration, what this would mean but hoped only good would come from Obama…to Americans chagrin.
Obama administration’s soviet-style philosophy coupled with Third Reich-type nefarious planning (Chicago-style thuggery), hardened Americans to a reality that they had been living in self-denial…for the past 78 years.
Now,neo-socialism in all its glory (in the 21st century), had finally arrived in America.
The unraveling of America’s financial/economic and government structures struck the proverbial “nail-in-the-coffin” for most concerned Americans (savings, investments, IRA’s et al). From this dirge,a Tea Party Movement was born coupled with amorphous Constitutional Conservatives.
Dysfunctional Wall Street, DNC, RNC, MSM and Washington’s culture of corruption would have nothing of this Tea Party, Constitutional Conservative talk. The “Good-’ol-Boy” culture of corruption was just fine the way is was…”don’t change a thing,” they would insist. “Crony-capitalism” was doin’ just great. Economic/social collapse and subsequent upheaval entailed (2007-style).
So, America has three evolving forces:
1) an enormous dependency class, suckling on governments teats (some 47%),
2) a centralised culture of corruption in all of Washington DC and
3) a vast citizenry, desirous of Tea party type, Constitutional Conservative values.
These are today’s American battle lines. A really tough nut to crack.
The Tea Party MUST:
1) morph into a political force, able to,
2) dismantle Washington DC’s culture of corruption and then
3)remove government’s teats from the dependent class of Americans (The 47%).
Complex, but doable. Is this a plan? Maybe! Or just a fireside chat, who knows???? God Bless America that was…the Experiment has come to its logical end. Amen. Vote Nov.6. Take 10 to 15 good friends with us to Save America.
God Save America. She’s on life support. Amen. Then there’s the Supreme Court Justices retirement and replacement (at least 3).
Regarding far-left ideas that are making it into the Democratic mainstream, another one is the wealth-is-theft school of thought. At the Democratic National Convention earlier this month, Democrats featured this idea in a prime-time speech. Elizabeth Warren’s rant was all about how the rich are “stealing” from everyone else and how they’ve “rigged the system” for that to happen. Folks, it’s not your mom and dad’s Democratic Party anymore.
