According to three important contemporary reports Fletcher summarizes, — one “crucial administrative document from the Islamic side,” some small “archaeological evidence” and the “Chronicle of 754,” an anonymous Christian narrative in Latin — after 711 Arab raids laid waste to “several provinces,” Tariq ibn Zayid’s army followed with fully equipped legions, who in 712 murdered Roderic of Spain.
North Africa’s governor then executed all Toledo’s prominent nobles (causing the Bishop to flee), devastated the countryside and perpetrated further destruction and mass murder in Zargoza and the Ebro valley. Upon returning to the Umayyad seat of power in Damascus, he transported innumerable enslaved Visigoth lords, and all their gold and jewels.
By 715, the next governor, Abd al-Aziz, conquered provinces throughout Iberia. Documents and archaeological excavations corroborate the arrival of Toledo’s Bishop in Rome and signs of 8th century devastation beside coins dated 711 to 713. In his April 713 treaty, Abd al-Aziz promised Theodemir lordship over, and free Christian practice throughout, seven southeastern towns. For this Abd al-Aziz extorted from Theodemir stiff annual head taxes of one silver dinar per person, all the region’s wheat, barley, unfermented grape juice, vinegar, honey and oil, and an inviolable promise not to help enemies of Spain’s Islamic conquerors.
From 718 through 720, As-Samh handed all Visigoth monarchy holdings to Arab Muslim governors, and gave all the less fertile land to the North African Berber Muslims. His generosity brought 150,000 to 200,000 Arab and Berber soldiers to Spain to usurp its wealth.
After the 750 Abbasids defeat of the Umayyads, in 762, the Islamic caliphate moved from Damascus to Baghdad. In 756 the Umayyad Abd al-Rahman escaped the Abbasid Caliph al-Saffah (“shedder of blood”) and established a rival Umayyad empire that ruled Spain until 1031. But the Umayyads continued to wreck havoc on Spain. Emir al Haken (796-822) kept a palace cavalry of 2,000 and a standing army of 60,000. In 805 alone, he crucified 72 people. In 818, he leveled Cordoba’s southern suburb. The military governors of the Umayyads’ three Spanish regions were constantly at war. In 884, for example, Burgos was destroyed “to its foundations.”
Even the reputedly enlightened Abd al-Rahman III (912-961) brutalized the population. At the Cordoba palace alone, he owned 3,750 slaves on his death in 961. On July 26 in 920, a Pyrenean monk at San Juan de la Pena recorded a slaughter in Valdejunquera, southwest of Pamplona. In 920, a three month campaign culminated on July 25 with a siege of the Muez castle. All “combatants” were “put to the sword,” including over 500 “counts and knights.” While returning to Cordoba, general al-Nasir totally destroyed many other villages too. The poet Ibn Abd Rabbihi later wrote the invaders left Osma “like a blackened piece of charcoal.”
In 976 Almanzor or Al-Mansur (“the victorious”) took power. In 977 he campaigned with his general against Leon. Some 56 campaigns followed in Almanzor’s rule alone. In 985, he sacked Barcelona and the San Cugat del Valles monastery. In 987, he plundered Coimbra (now in Portugal). In 995, he imprisoned the count of Castile, and destroyed Carrion and Astorga. In 997 he attacked Santiago de Compostela. In 999 he destroyed Pamplona and in 1002 flattened Roija and San Millan de la Cogolla monastery. Almonzor raided Catalonia in 1003; Castile in 1004; Leon in 1005; and Aragon in 1006. Almanzor himself described all war on Christians as Jihad. Christian subjects said he was “seized by the Devil.”
In the 11th century, Morocco’s Almoravids crossed the Atlas mountains, conquered its plain and then conquered Spain — which they ruled from 1080 until Fernando liberated most of the peninsula in 1248. “[N]oting can stand in their way,” wrote the Muslim historian Ibn Kahldun of Almoravid religious and military fervor, “for their outlook is the same and the object they desire is common to all and is one for which they are prepared to die.” Thus in 1148 alone, the Almohads massacred 100,000 Jews in Fez, 120,000 Jews in Marrakesh and wrecked devastation and death throughout Spain, from Seville to Tortosa.
In 1148, Jewish physician and philosopher Maimonides fled Cordoba’s Almohad persecution with his family disguised as Muslims. He found asylum in Fatimid Egypt. Arabs and Muslims had “persecuted us severely, and passed baneful and discriminatory legislation against us,” he later wrote. “Never did a nation molest, degrade, debase, and hate us as much as they.” Maimonides’ 1172 Epistle to the [persecuted] Jews of Yemen that forced conversions they reported from Yemen, the Berbers had similarly forced upon Jews across the Maghreb and Spain. He described Mohammed as “the Madman,” despairing that the sole objective of his “invented … well known religion,” was “procuring rule and submission….”
“To allow a mosque at a place a Muslim gang destroyed on 9/11 would amount to formally blessing Islam’s 1,400-year-old tradition of exclusivity and suppression of all persons of all other faiths. It would be a 100% victory of Islam and sharia law over the U.S. Constitution and America’s time-honored democracy and pluralism.”
On the other hand, to forbid the mosque would be a 100% victory of fear and “sensitivity” over the U.S. Constitution and America’s time-honored commitment to private property rights and religious pluralism. We the people don’t get to forbid people from putting up buildings on their private property based on the viewpoints expressed. It may be unpleasant to have the Cordoba House on that site, and we should be vigilant in holding Rauf and Khan to their public claims of pluralism and tolerance, but we can’t forbid the building.
Try and understand- Islam is a dominating, nazi-style propagandist death cult. Allowing it to graffiti a city it has violated is exactly the same as allowing a nazi cultural centre at Auschwitz.

Are we not at war? Why would we allow a covert operative who serves an ideology currently waging war against the United States to build an institution dedicated to advancing enemy ideology and propaganda anywhere in the United States? Would we have allowed the Japanese or the Germans to do so during WWII?
Are we at war with every Muslim in the world? It seems to me that it makes more sense strategically to try to divide whatever peaceful Muslims we can find from the radicals, and to encourage reform movements. The best possible outcome isn’t slaughtering the entire Muslim world, it’s to see the emergence of a reformed Muslim religion that can live in peace with its neighbors like modern Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism.

Would we have allowed American citizens of Japanese or German descent to own property and do what they want with it during WWII? Yeah, I think so. If all Cordoba House does is preach, our response should be to loudly protest on the street, every day; maybe do what other commenters are suggesting and sell bacon dogs outside their building to force them to show whether they can peacefully coexist with the rest of us. But forbidding the building by law is flat out unconstitutional, whether because it’s discriminating against a particular religion (there are multiple churches within three blocks of the site), or because it’s a taking (which can’t even use the poor excuse of blight, which I also opposed in New London and Atlantic Yards. No one with a semblance of sanity could call Tribeca a blighted neighborhood). You don’t want the government deciding that your anti-Islamist billboard on your private property is “offensive”, and so must be removed, right? I don’t trust the New York City or the Federal government with the power they’d need to have to prevent this building, and neither should you.

Faisal Abdul Rauf is at war with the United States. He preaches and teaches the same evil ideology as those who take up arms against our soldiers and plot to kill our civilians. His funding comes from the same groups dedicated to our destruction. He is the equivalent of a covert agent sent into a country to undermine from within. In many ways he is more insidious than the actual warrior in Iraq or Afghanistan.

It’s a grand symbol to Muslims. They build mosques on top of the ruins of holy places they have destroyed to symbolize and their conquest and demonstrate the domination of Islam over all others. It’s a victory symbol.
Everything is not about how we see it. There are many exceptions to property rights — ask the people of Brooklyn Yards or New London. The sale should never have been allowed in the first place.

The Muslim brotherhood started right after WWI and the crumbling of the Ottoman empire. We already got a signal in the fifties, with the capture of the Suez canal, and it has been escalating ever since. What Hassan Al-Bannah and Said Qutb launched more than 80 years ago has grown into a real threat.
With no wimps around, bullies can’t get anywhere. Conversely, mindless accommodation gives the bullies all the latitude they need.

To see the true “peace” and “acceptance” of Islam, a massive Jewish center should be constructed firectly due east of the cordoba house.
Your position that Rauf and/or Kahn are radical Islamicists is tenuous and circumstantial at best. Are they members of the Moslim Brotherhood or something like it? Have they praised al-Bannah or Qutb? I realize that they may have studiously avoided doing any of these things for fear of giving themselves away, but as is, it’s all a bit too conspiratorial: friend of a friend who once…yadda yadda…. After all, their expressed views might actually be their views. As for the West pounding the poor folks of the non-Western world, you can hear that in respectable college class rooms all over America.
Mind you, I think a case against a mosque 600 feet from ground zero can be made without any reference to Rauf’s and Khan’s views, but it would have to take into account, as Brian pointed out, our cherished traditions of freedom and private property. Perhaps something with zoning regs would be the thing?

The problem with zoning is that there’s no good way to zone in a non-discriminatory manner. Remember that there are at least two major historic churches next to or near the WTC site, St. Paul’s and Trinity, so you can’t, say, zone out religious buildings. The planned Cordoba House complies with existing zoning laws, so NYC would have to change their zoning laws to prohibit it, which would certainly violate the spirit of the 5th Amendment even if technically legal under our bizarre takings law.
I don’t think any case can be made against a mosque in the abstract, especially if Rauf and Co. are what they claim to be (and their website is surprisingly good, even including links to articles condemning Durban II for antisemitism!) Rauf’s attachment to Islamic law is the key to understanding what kind of Muslim he is. Saying that the US Constitution is sharia compliant, just needs a little tweaking to be fully compliant, marks him as a promoter of Islamic supremacy.
There is a respectable legal argument that any promoter of Islamic law in America could be prosecuted for sedition. See the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Refah v. Turkey.
There is a great deal of Islamic law that contradicts American law and Rauf knows it. My present understanding is that Islamic law is not entirely consistent in its attitude toward unbelievers, but most schools of jurisprudence do generally interpret the Koran, ahadith and Sira as teaching that all impediments to the spread and eventual domination of Islam must be overcome. This domination is to be expressed in the physical and political form of the caliphate. From that general directive it follows that unbelievers who cannot be peacefully convinced of the Allah-given right of Muslims to govern them are, sooner or later, legitimate targets of aggression–enemies to be conquered.
The problem is GMB, as I understand it, is that no member of the “International” Muslim Brotherhood will openly recognize an outright allegiance… with the possible exception of those who are right there at the center, in Egypt itself. Thus it’s essentially impossible to to tie a Muslim, or Muslim Organization to the Brotherhood by statements made by that person or Organization (see the problems the Justice Department has had in this regard). One can only make an argument via money-trails and ancillary communications.

The two most important things to always keep in mind when dealing with Muslims is [a] there is only one Koran. There is no separate edition for so-called moderate Muslims. And [b] taqiyya. Speaking of which, Feisal Rauf’s favorable comparison of the U.S. Constitution with Sharia law is the biggest crock of taqiyya yet. Once you understand and know how to recognize taqiyya it is almost comical to listen to some of these guys when they go into their taqiyya mode, which is just about any time they are speaking. I will have to admit they are remarkably clever wordsmiths when it comes to disguising their true intent.

Mark_in_Dayton, I completely understand your position and your objection. I included the descriptive “prophet” for two reasons. First, it is how the text I consulted refered to Al-Hindi. Second, “moderate” Muslims claim that jihad and other facits of what they claim is “radical” Islam has nothing to do with the teachings of Mohammed. I wanted to show from the quotes and from the citation to Al-Hindi that here was a respected and historical scholar of Islam saying the exact same thing the jihadists are saying today.

I suggest a quid pro quo – or tit for tat if you will. Islam is triumphalist, and this ideology extends to a physical presence, including buildings. For the Muslim (moderate or not), building a mosque at Ground Zero is a victory on two fronts – spiritual, to be sure, but also political, as Islam continues to make strong inroads into American political (and other) life. For the American Muslim who refuses to acknowledge his loyalty to the country, all the while trumpeting his commitment and loyalty only to the tenants of Islam (Shari’a), the building of this mosque tells him that Islam has won, is on the way to destroying any semblance of American independence and religious freedom.
I’m originally from an Arab country. I know them inside & out. In daily life, all they care about is ”beating” someone, even in the most trivial way. That’s how people with low self-esteem & a criminal mentality think, just to beat you out of something, anything. How many guys would ask me for a cigarette when they had a pack in their pocket, just to ”get” something. Or in the cafe, to see if they could get you to pay for a coffee. Or cheat you on the price of something. And if you had a workman, they considered it a victory to NOT work while getting paid, to see how much they could get away with. And this goes double, triple, ten times more if the victim is a non-Muslim. They would lie, make up sob stories, excuses, any tactic to screw you out of something. Friends would ask you to lend them something, anything, with no intention of giving it back. Even something as innocuous as asking for a glass of water was to see if they could make you do something, to dominate you, so to speak. The answer when someone asked to be served was, ”you think I’m your servant? Get it yourself.”
And this is the exact nature of Islam, to take, never to give. Zero reciprocity. Non-stop demands, for more & more, no matter how outrageous. Give them an inch, they’ll take a mile. And everything has some symbolic meaning, to dominate, to take more, to somehow beat the infidel. And, this is exactly what this mosque is – to push it in your face, to say ”look what we did AND to add insult to injury, we build a mosque, a monument to hurting you.”
Maybe they can see by now that this is having the opposite effect of “healing.”
If they really want to “heal” wounds, and truly support “Interfaith” it would be much better if they donated the building to the YMCA or JCH.
Lappen misses the bigger story.
Regardless of Faisal Abdul Rauf’s background and motives that Lappen raises grave concerns about, the more troubling story is about why the local community committee approved plans for the mosque to be built.
The local community committee met May 10th, 2010 to consider the application to approve plans for the mosque.
No one attended to protest.
A few, whose family members of those lost in 9/11, raised concerns with the project, but it does not appear they actually attended, since reports are that no one protested at the community committee hearing. One might surmise that they raised their objections only after hearing that the community committee unanimously endorsed the plans.

The site of 9/11 has been labelled ground zero or sacred ground. There has been much talk of memorializing the site to the fallen, be it leaving ground zero as it is, to build a memorial there or to re-build the twin towers.
Until now we have assumed that the American psyche had been so painfully scarred by 9/11, that no American would take kindly to any attempt by anyone to take away from the significance of 9/11′s sacred ground zero.
Somehow, the symbolism of a huge and tall mosque looming over 9/11′s sacred ground zero has been lost on Americans. Why that is so, is the big story Lappen missed.
One can assume that there are a number of levels of approval that the mosque promoters must get through, before they will get a building permit to put their 1st shovel in the ground.
Perhaps objections will mount and ultimately quash any plan for the mosque. The fact however, that those objections were not immediate and damning at that May 10th, 2010 community committee meeting, is startling.
Bill, you mention the most disturbing aspect of this story, the fact that few cared, and less even dared, to raise opposition to this insidious mosque project.
The fact that the zoning board even allowed it to be on the agenda is of major concern, after all, wasn’t it Muslims screaming allah akhbar who murdered 3,000 NY citizens? Didn’t ANY of these zoning board dimwits realize that building a mosque so close to sacred ground was an Islamic supremacist act of trampling/spitting on their memories, and in the faces of the rest of New Yorkers?
Further, where were the regular citizens of NYC, many who otherwise come out to support or condemn all manner of projects, yet this MAJOR and dangerous one elicited barely a peep. What is wrong with these people?
I can only surmise that IF they lived in Israel, in closer proximity to Muslim terrorists, (on each and every border)and suffered missile attacks on a regular basis, perhaps they would rise up in protest against the designs of Muslim supremacists!
We may not know the entire story, For example, with many organizations, often anti-Israel motions to “divest” (as in the case of the Presbyterian Council USA), the Teachers Union in the UK, or more often, in smaller venues like student unions on Universities scattered throughout this country, Muslims will be extremely well prepared, have all their cards lines up, and when the first “motion” is introduced, the public — the people who would naturally oppose many of these measures are completely taken by surprise and become flustered. Sometimes, as in the case of building a Mosque on or near the twin-towers site this would no doubt be all Americans, sometimes with more narrowly construed anti-Israeli measures this would be the more pro-Israeli Americans.
Whatever — either way the Muslim organizations behind such moves have often acted surreptitiously and for a variety of reasons which are not that hard to understand, they act with complete unanimity of purpose.

The point simply being that it could be that this was a well organized campaign and that “we” were simply caught flat footed and disorganized, I really do not know.
The fact of the matter is that in all walks of life now in the USA, the various arms of the Muslim Brotherhood are carefully planning, and implementing a variety of plans in this country to further Muslim Brotherhood “aims”.

Did anybody know about the plans for a 13-story mosque near the WTC, or did the group planning to build it operate mostly under the radar until the May 10th community committee meeting? Perhaps there’s been no outcry because most people are simply unaware.
In any case, why does Rauf’s group want to build a mosque that close to Ground Zero, knowing what happened there, if not to rub our faces in it? A Muslim mosque towering over Ground Zero is an unacceptable humiliation no American should tolerate.
Additionally, a mosque that large would bring thousands of Muslims into the area, and how long would it be before they start agitating to have Ground Zero covered over with a strip mall, or a Muslims-only park?
There’s also India to think about. Moslems invaded 1000 years ago. They always raised Mosque’s on destroyed Hindu temple sites, beginning with the Kutb Minar in Delhi. Tensions are high throughout India and Islam is the source of terrorism brought from Pakistan, which by the way, was part of India proper before the British left. Partition was the only answer. The Hindus would not go back to dhimmitude.

After reading this article, which is by itself very true, and reader’s comments, the only question I have and we all should have is: How we can stop it? What could and should we all do? Are we ready to surrender or we will fight?
War on terror (banned by Obama) is not only overseas, it’s coming home too, just remember Major Nidal Hasan from Fort Hood or Times Square bomber and many other.
Our public officials not going to do anything to stop Mosque at Ground Zero.
So, is there a leader or a group willing to take charge and organize people like us? In NYC only you will find hundreds of thousands to support you and how many more in a whole country?
Even in Brooklyn people are trying to organize against a local mosque- BayPeople.org.
I bet you never heard about them, thanks to our liberal media.
Where are the leaders, good lawyers and all freedom loving people?

New York’s Carnegie Corporation gave money; the Rockefeller Brothers and Hunt Alternatives funds gave money to build a Mosque. How about giving money to stop building a Mosque at Ground Zero?
How can we call for religious pluralism in other nations, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and around the world, but then say no to religious pluralism in NYC?
It is not a matter of whether people agree with or like another religion. It is a matter of being consistent. If we say we stand for religious freedom, but not here, what exactly do we stand for?
And who is that really helping in the war of ideas?

SO, I continue to hear a lot of debate, and read articles, journals, and have read different religious scholars on these issues. I’m a recent college graduate, from Rutgers University, growing up in an extremely liberal atmosphere here in the NorthEast. Political issues such as gay marriage, abortion, among many others continue to grow, and are no longer issues, but in the NorthEast, the minority that disapproves due to ethical, or religious stands, are frowned upon. With this gradual shift, which has been an ongoing process in our society, for the past few decades, let’s take a look at the hot topic of the mosque being built 2 blocks from 9/11.
Let me tell you one thing about Islam..within the next 20 years, it will be the #1 religion in the world. If you doubt me, google the future of Islam, and tell me what you find. If you look throughout the world, there is no country that officially backs a religion, other than many Middle Eastern countries and the religion of ISLAM. If Islam faces growth issues, funding will increase from the Middle East (oil..which we are paying for—woot woot). Europe’s #1 growing religion will soon be ISLAM, since Christian cathedrals, and churches are closing due to media’s negative religious portrayal and public disinterest, which has lead to the lack of financing. Now that Christianity and Judaism continues to dwindle, and the only growing Christians are the evangelical Christians that build churches and try to SLOW DOWN the next Islamic expansion: AMERICA.
If you think this is a joke, it’s not. Islamic organizations have publicized the religious takeover of America, and the first method of this is by their families. If you look at the ideal American family, there is one father, one mother, and usually 1-2 children. Middle eastern families typically have a father, mother (or two if you are in the Middle East) and children ranging from 4-9 children. If you think this is a joke it isn’t. The children become educated, and they are brought up with a strong Islamic foundation, and they will not deter from it. They will marry other American men and women, have an Islamic traditional wedding because the American parents will believe its culturally different and are intrigued by it. The next generation will have children and grow them following Islam, and the trend continues, and ISLAM SPREADS. If you think I’m joking, open your eyes, this mosque “cultural center” (for public approval).. is the first step. I’m not a white or black, I am an Arabic Christian that was born in New York, but my parents are muslim. They will not accept me for who I am, but I speak from what I know. THINK ABOUT THIS… your children’s future may depend on it. TAKE A STAND WHILE WE CAN! GOD BLESS AMERICA..
One just has to look to the Muslim nations to see what they want. They may have peace and order through the shariah law. Not necessarily a bad thing on the surface.
But consider what we would lose to follow their example. Freedom of thought and expression, only one acceptable religion, other religions are considered second class citizen. Like I said look,and study what they want, how they achieve their goals. When it comes to what is said and what is done, they are quite different. When I see church’s going up in Saudi Arabia, and christians getting equal pay, and government jobs in Egypt that’s when we could say they have some tolerance as a religion. But it’s more like a political system. We should put laws in place to protect ourselves from the control they want to yield through shariah law. Otherwise we going to be surprised how they slowly and methodically used our freedom to establish submission to Allah. The mosque in NY City is only a declaration of taking ground for their god Allah, and placing their flag in territory they won and encouraging the fighters in this holy war.

The only solution to the Mosque Controversy that disturbs America and opposes “to bigotry no sanction,” is to build a religious center like the Army Chapels which can convert their buildings and make them usable for all faiths. Unless pluralism prevails amongst Religious Arab Moslems, I would never welcome one of them in my synagogue, which, by the way, has been used by Christians and Moslems for their prayers – Until the leaders PROVE their pluralism, they tread on, nay, demolish American ideals. An Iman, and a Mullana, and a Coptic Egyptian have all preached in my Synagogue. An Arab ambassador of Isael was a scholar in residence at my congregation.
