President Obama has in fact said he wants to stop the military option and return to the Clinton era Police Model. The Police Model may well work against street criminals, thieves, forgers and such. The Police Model is rather ill equipped to deal with armed, trained and dedicated armies-men well willing to trade life for life.

I, too, dislike the sobroquet “War on Terror,” but GWB was up against the clock to say “we are fighting those who believe and adhere to a vision of Islam that includes the violent application of terrorist tactics to expand their influence and destroy non-Muslim people and nations” in a pithy way that didn’t automatically isolate and alienate the millions of Muslims we aren’t at war against. The GWOT is not a war against a tactic, but rather against those with a global reach who would use that tactic to threaten the US, her allies and interests. Again, if you can find a way to make McVeigh, the IRA or KKK fit that mold, more power to you.

As the idea of “creating more enemies,” I see it more as a case of those enemies we did not know of coming into the open. As many have pointed out, the terrorists don’t wear a uniform declaring their loyalty; we do not know they are an enemy until they act. Anyone who is going to say “I’ll blow myself up because those American devils kicked out that murderous dog Saddam” isn’t someone we were ever likely to win over anyway. They were a loaded chamber waiting for the hammer to fall, so I say it’s better to know them for what they are than for what they were hiding as. My perception is that many of the Democrat persuasion are reticent to listen to what these people’s leaders are really saying and to honestly consider just how many jihadi there may be. If only 1% of Muslims believe in violent jihad (and polls show it is higher) that’s still a global army of over a million. I don’t say we have to kill all of them, but we will have to kill all the most dedicated and ardent before the others start reevaluating their commitment.

When I look at the UN, I see a body that does reflect the world. Unfortunately, in most of the world, poverty and hunger reign and the powerful keep their power through violence, corruption and graft. On the banks of the East River it can honestly be said that the inmates run the asylum.
