I am a long time colleague of Joel Kovel and played a tangential role in the college decision not to renew his contract. He was not fired; the current financial crisis played a key role as did his diminishing participation in the college and his teaching evaluations. Prof. Kovel’s decision to politicize his departure does a great disservice to colleagues and a college who welcomed him for 21 years when few other institutions would. That Bard has recently initiated a liberal arts college for Palestinians should give pause to those who accept Prof. Kovel’s claims at face value.
Dear Mark Lytle,
He was fired Mark. You academics have a knack for spin. And if he wasn’t fired, he
should have been.
