The Corn & Miniter Show: Fred’s First Debate

Fred Thompson's first appearance (and his big pause) in the Republican debate last Tuesday is the opening topic of this week's discussion between David Corn and Richard Miniter. Was he prepared enough? Also, the increasingly bitter spats between Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, the Evangelical factor and, on the Democratic side, Obama aiming at Hillary, who maintains her lead, and much more. Romney did well playing to the Michigan crowd, especially with the dig to Governor Granholm and the one-state-recession, an all to recognized reality in Michigan. He answered pointedly, and of course seemed prepared, except for the “check with the lawyers” comment. Though it made sense, who didn’t expect someone would capitalize on it?

Gulliani threw everything right back at Romney. The back and forth between the two was entirely expected. Nothing real new there.

It’s a challenge for me to see the two presumptive front-runners able to attack each other’s message – they both have records that can support conservatism but they also both have records that show they had a liberal base to please and that they routinely did. Either one of those two can be fairly criticized for their history in supporting (or not supporting, as the case may be) conservatism.

Thompson held his own. I’m proud of him for that. I was hoping for guns ablazing – but I’ll settle for him being able to show he knew what he was talking about. As soon proves he has the fire-in-the-belly to win this thing, I think he’ll prove a formidable candidate.

Did anyone else notice McCain? I sure didn’t.

I with these guys on Fred, while I was disappointed that he was not as outgoing, I need to stop and remember that Fred T is a laid back guy.

Interesting situation. We need someone who can finish the war honorably and with victory, and we need major economic revolution here at home.

The best choice is Huckabee. I hope he gets more support.

I’m wondering when Mrs. Bill Clinton (as Rush is fond of calling her) will debate them, it seemed as though they were debating her all night!

    The debate:
I agreed with everything Hunter said about defense, foreign policy and trade. I would love to see him run for Senator against Boxer and if he doesn’t win, he’s my choice for Secretary of Defense. I was about to send him a donation until his life begins at conception rant which blurs the distinction between potentiality and actuality and keeps a sensible alternative to abortion: the morning after pill from becoming the norm. .

Thompson held his own I thought and impressed me more on my third viewing of the debate. The man badly needs some plastic surgery around the eyes. And some public speaking coaching from Newt Gingrich, who I think would make a superb Vice President, taking on special projects for President Thompson.

Huckabee reminds me of Jim Nabors and Carter and Clinton. Not good. Also, I hate being preached at especially by Baptists!

Ron Paul’s eccentricity is fun. The Stepford candidate can never close the sale. Tancredo and Brownback and McCain should go home. It’s over for them..

Lastly, I’ve read that Giuliani left a debt of several billion dollars for Bloomberg to pay off which makes his tax spiel a lie.

    So, it’s Thompson for me.

  5. I don’t mind if Fred Thompson is picked as Rudy Giuliani’s running mate. The bottom line is this: Rudy scares the hell out of the Democrats. They fear him more than any other Republican candidate.
