The Battle for America: Around the Nation, Sept 8, 2010
FLORIDA
Stephanie Maier reports:
The latest Rasmussen poll shows Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott neck-and-neck with Democrat and current Florida CFO Alex Sink, 45% to 44%, respectively (the remaining were either undecided or favored another candidate).
Independent candidate Bud Chiles, son of the late Florida Governor Lawton Chiles, will drop his bid for governor in support of Alex Sink. Chiles’ withdraw is expected to bring additional votes to Sink.
Republican Rick Scott named Jacksonville state Representative Jennifer Carroll as his running mate. In 2003, the U.S. Navy veteran became the first black female Republican elected to the Florida legislature, and if victorious in November, she will become Florida’s first black lieutenant governor. (Democratic challenger Alex Sink already announced Senator Rod Smith of Alachua County as her running mate in late August.)
The Libertarian Party candidate for governor, John Wayne Smith, has been removed from the November ballot by the Florida Secretary of State’s office for apparently failing to file certain documents on time. Smith contests the allegation. He would have been the first Libertarian gubernatorial candidate in Florida.
VIRGINIA
Mary Beth Niemeyer reports:
Life in VA-5 (incumbent Tom Perriello (D) vs. challenger Robert Hurt (R)) continues as before: Everybody hates everybody else, and they’re telling the pollsters about it. Last weekend, SurveyUSA dished up terrifying news for Perriello. Not only is he down a whopping 26 points, he’s lost further traction amongst independents and the constituency which first gave him his job — the youth vote in Charlottesville. The DCCC, however, claimed on September 2 that Perriello and Hurt are in a statistical tie, and reminded all interested parties that Perriello still has plenty of ad money to play with. Meanwhile, the Rothenberg Political Report is saying the hell with everybody and listing the race as a “Toss-Up, Leans Republican.”
CONNECTICUT
Jane Genova reports:
With two months left in the midterm campaigns, the most action in blue state Connecticut is coming in the U.S. Senate race between populist Attorney General Richard Blumenthal (D) and wealthy former World Wrestling Entertainment owner Linda McMahon (R). A July Quinnipiac University poll showed Blumenthal with a 10-point lead over McMahon, down from 20 in June. On September 16, President Obama will fundraise for Blumenthal. That is being positioned by McMahon as a sign of desperation. Meanwhile, Blumenthal had a high-profile media victory with his role in ending Craigslist adult services. McMahon had setbacks with the death of two former WWE wrestlers, ages 29 and 48. After Labor Day she will be hit with negative ads. The question is if her war chest can fund an effective push-back.
In other races, surprisingly abortion is an issue in this socially moderate state. Among candidates opposing abortion are the GOP’s Martha Dean, candidate for attorney general, and Mark Boughton, candidate for lieutenant governor. Both defeated their pro-choice opposition.
TEXAS
Kristin Esparza reports:
As mid term elections get nearer in the state of Texas, accusations of everything from money mismanagement to racism are passing back and forth between the Democrat nominee, former Houston Mayor Bill White, and the Republican incumbent, Rick Perry. At the same time, a fire burned down the storage facility holding the voting machines for Texas’ largest county, leading many to question whether or not it was intentional; and if so could it change the outcome of the elections?
The illegal immigration debate is rearing its head in Texas as well, as city councilmen in Tomball, just outside of Houston, are proposing laws that would prevent illegals from buying, working and renting in the city. Will candidates for larger offices in this border state chime in with their views, or stay out of it in hopes of gaining votes from Hispanic voters? The pressure is on in Texas, and with voting time approaching it won’t be letting up soon.

Forget CT. People up here in this bluest of blue states are dumber than a box of rocks. That jobs have left and are continuing to leave the state does not produce concern over the business practices of the state government. That taxes are spiriling out of control is unquestioned by the lefties. That the state is over $3 billion in debt is no big deal to the left. That Blumenthal is a liar, and used his office to threaten bankers with a crime for accepting money for their work with NO legal foundation does not bother the lefty voter up here.
I’m liking Jan Brewer. Her debate performance was nothing short of miraculous. Stunning in its intellectual and emotional heft. And the headless bodies she found in the desert should, I think, propel her to the national stage. Forget Palin. I say nominate Jan Brewer and her running mate, Icabod Crane.
What’s really weird is that she’s still better than the Democrat.
I live in southern AZ. At LEAST 13 dead bodies, most shot execution-style but a couple were headless I’m told by local LEOs, have been found within 30 miles of my home, which is 40 miles west of Phoenix. Jan Brewer is not lying about the bodies, headless and otherwise. Just because you haven’t heard about it on the TV news doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Thought you would have learned that by now.
I’ve had all I can take of the “articulate” politicians. I’ll take one who may not be a great public speaker, but does an outstanding job of GOVERNING, which Brewer has proven to excel at. Pick your candidates based on their speech delivery skills, appearance and ability to lie well, get OBAMA. Get it?
As I age, I am more & more astounded by the vile & despicable rhetoric spewed by any & all candidates. Yet once many of our media ‘giants’ weigh in, it gets even more despicable. The ability to take an issue or event & turn it around so completely that it can be made to appear as something totally different than the actual history, is incredible.
One thing is certain. The media has decided to weigh in, in favor of anyone who happens to be a lefty. The media has also decided Americans are idiot’s, fool’s,
stupid, ignorant, uneducated, & any other vile name they can call us.
Now, when those same Americans (the exact same people), voted Barack Obama in, they were wise, they were tolerant, they were post racist, they were wonderful. Ain’t it amazing how the media can dump anyone who is not willing to march lockstep to the liberal tune?
News Melange: ICE, Fidel, Rodney King
From the Good News/Bad News Department: The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, affectionately known as ICE, announced that as of September 5, 2010 it had apprehended 506,232 illegal aliens over the course of about 10 months. That’s about 50,623 bad guys and gals per month nabbed by the agency, which is pretty outstanding enforcement.
That’s the good news.
The bad news about ICE, which could also be termed the TBA, for Teats on a Bull Agency, is that they also announced they had released 506,232 illegal aliens who are now no longer considered illegal aliens but rather fugitive aliens.
ICE/TBA takes a curious approach to law enforcement and fulfilling its mission; its approach is founded on placing trust in its apprehendees.
In effect, our federal agents say to the criminal, illegal aliens, “Now, you be good, okay? Just show up on the appointed day so we can have a hearing and deport you. Got that?” The illegals gladly say, “Si, senor!” and are never seen or heard from again,. . .

Bill/AZCIII:
In the last four months Jan Brewer has been caught lying, three times and counting.
The comments made on June 16, 2010, and June 27, 2010, clearly indicates that the Brewer says that immigrants are beheading people in the United States desert. She first ran away from the question and the press when confronted with the question. She finally when to FOX/ FAKE News to recant her lie.
When Brewer was confronted with the fact the two of her top Advisors (Paul Senseman, Chuck Coughlin) are lobbyist for “Private Prisons” giant CCA she first ran away from the question and the press.
In an attempt to gain sympathy, she first said her father had died in Germany fighting the Nazi in World War II (which ended 1945) but of course we find out the truth that her father was never in Germany and died in California in 1955. Do you see a trend here?
Brewer signed into law SB 1070 Bill (Did she even read it?), lied about the crime rates in AZ (even Janet Napolitano knows that all crimes rates went down), and now we find out that she is in the pockets of PRIVATE PRISONS who stand to benefit with the increase Federal jailing, and thus they will pay her back, I wonder if it has to do anything about the fact that her son was transferred to a brand new prison, he was convicted for rape and sexual assault, I guess the fruit does not fall far the tree.
