The fragile ceasefire is indeed being held - by Israel. Hamas and it's cronies haven't been reciprocating, with at least 2 seperate barrages of rockets from Gaza since the "ceasefire" began.

Then again, Hamas has never been known for its willingness to reciprocate (unless, of course, it is in the form of rockets).

Anguished parents grieving. Their beloved fallen into Arab hands. What exquisite delight for Arabs everywhere. What a lifting of Muslim hearts. Glory to Allah.

Arab hygiene standards are the lowest in the world. Arab faith is borrowed from Christians and Jews. Arab accomplishments are borrowed from Persians, Kurds and Moguls. Arab society is medieval. Arab innovation, science and technology are nonexistent. But in the suffering of the Shalit family all Araby is triumphant.

Every time the Israelis and the Arabs negotiate we are reminded anew of the burning jealousy, inferiority and shame at the core of Arab Jew-hatred. Weigh what the Arabs are asking in return for Shalit and you know the relative worth of Jewish flesh and Arab flesh. In the prisoner-exchange-mart as on the battlefield, Jewish monkeys and pigs are valued far higher than the best kind of Arab.

Small consolation for the Shalits. And no damper on Arab joy. If you’re a felah living in filth, a little Jew-suffering makes it all worthwhile.

My heart goes out to the Shalits. May they see their boy safe home soon.

The present Israeli government has neither the desire nor the will to take the difficult steps necessary to free Gilad Shalit. The Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, and his Defence Minister, Ehud Barak, do not have the courage and the determination, or for that matter, the leadership, to either impose strict and painful sanctions on the residents of the Gaza Strip to help force the terrorists in Hamas to release Gilad, nor do they have the confidence to take the military and security actions to cause such hardship and damage to the Gaza Strip that the Hamas would beg them to take Gilad back. Instead, Olmert and Barak have opted, as is their wont, to take the easiest way out, and try to buy off the Hamas with building supplies, food, medicines, even Israeli monies, in the hope that they can avoid altogether any serious military or diplomatic decisions.
The Hamas knows this quite well and is leading the Israeli government around by the nose, demanding and receiving all they want. For example, there is supposed to be a cease fire in effect and the Hamas is supposed to stop any terrorist actions from Gaza, but over the past week terrorist rockets from Gaza have hit inside Israel several times with no Israeli military response, and only the delay in the passage of Israeli supplies into Gaza. Thus the Hamas knows it has no reason to release Gilad, so long as they can still attack us, and still expect to be supplied by the Israelis. The situation here is truly chaotic, and thanks to the lack of Israeli leadership, it is only bound to get worse.

Both the Shalit family and Olmert have had a very difficult time with this affair. They face a cruel and heartless enemy that revels in inflicting pain. Mr Shalit has the task of getting his son back at any cost. I don't agree with everything that he says but I can understand that he has to do whatever he can. Mr Olmert has to view this as only a part of his attempt to deal with Gaza.

It's my opinion that Olmert hasn't done enough to deal with Hamas in Gaza and to return the soldier. For Hamas the soldier is a talisman that they see as preventing an Operation Defensive Shield 2. It would be better if they saw his captivity as attracting such an operation.

Probably 1000 Gazans have died in the two years that they've held the soldier, more or less as a result of holding this hostage. It doesn't seem like Hamas cares how many of their own die.

It's hard to believe that in 2 years the Mossad hasn't been able to find out where he's being held or been able to capture someone who knows where he's being held.
