Spain Blames Economic Crisis on ‘Anglo-Saxon’ Conspiracy

Spain’s Socialist government seeks a foreign scapegoat for self-inflicted economic wounds.

Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has ordered Spain’s official intelligence agency, the National Intelligence Center (CNI), to investigate whether the “Anglo-Saxon media” (aka English-language press) is conspiring to undermine the Spanish economy.

According to the center-left newspaper El País, which is close to the Zapatero government, the CNI is investigating “whether attacks by investors and the aggressiveness of some Anglo-Saxon media are being driven by market forces and challenges facing the Spanish economy, or whether there is something more behind this campaign.”

In recent weeks, the UK-based Financial Times newspaper and the Economist magazine, as well as some publications in the United States, have all published stories that have been highly critical of the economic policies being pursued by the Zapatero government.

To be sure, Spain is in the throes of the worst economic crisis in its recent history. Reeling from the collapse of a debt-driven construction boom, Spain has posted seven consecutive quarters of negative growth. According to the latest figures released by Spain’s National Statistics Agency, Spanish GDP fell 3.6 percent in 2009. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says there will be no positive GDP growth in Spain until 2011, at which point it will still be below 1 percent.

At the same time, Spain now has the highest unemployment rate in the European Union. Nearly 20 percent of working-age Spaniards (or 4.5 million people) were without a job at the beginning of 2010. That compares with an average rate of 10 percent among the 16 countries that use the euro currency.

Spain is also facing an exploding budget deficit. The collapse of the labor market, which has resulted in a steep drop in tax collections, and the Zapatero government’s haphazard (and spendthrift) policy response of increasing unproductive public sector spending skyrocketed the deficit to nearly 12 percent of GDP in 2009 (or five times higher than in 2008).

The combination of negative GDP growth, rising unemployment, and a high deficit has raised concerns about the sustainability of Spain’s finances. Indeed, Standard & Poor’s, the credit rating agency, recently lowered its outlook on Spain’s sovereign debt from “stable” to “negative.” S&P, which had already lowered Spain’s maximum AAA rating in January 2009, cited the risk of a “prolonged period of below-par” economic growth and “persistently high fiscal deficits.”

Spain now faces the prospect of a downgrade of its government debt, which would make it more expensive for Spain to finance its debt. Indeed, investors anxious that a debt crisis in Greece could create a domino effect in Spain are already demanding higher interest rates to hold Spanish debt. As a result, the Zapatero government is working overtime to try to reassure debt markets that it will quickly return to fiscal prudence.

Why sure. Everybody surely knows that America tanked her own economy to gut the euro. Makes perfect sense.

at this time their needs to be cooperation between countries to get out of the problem they are in, if they stop critzing the kingdom of spain like they are doing now they will never ever grew. They cure there nation together they might stay at the bottom for awhile but in years there cooperation will bloom creating a great Union probably with the most succesfull economy. In this time of need everyone needs to cooperate and stop worrying about their own asses and excuse me for my language.

Socialist governments can be like Inspector Clouseau- perpetually unaware that the chaos and destruction around them was their own doing.

While Madrid and Athens burn, its progressives fiddle away.. (big surprise).

The idea of the EU was always going to be a costly proposition for its socialist framers. The denial has been there from the outset, and still moreso now as harsh reality comes crashing down. Like every failed socialist experiment it was always going to struggle with unsustainable nanny-type programs and agendas, from misguided and abused social engineering, fiscal mismanagement, corruption, and all consuming and inefficienct public sectors.

Stavros in Athens and Jose in Madrid, have only to look at themselves – if they do not like what’s starring back then that denial is as much theirs as the debt they deny even exists. Wait till soviet-style hyperinflation kicks in, they’ll be lucky to be eating lentl and bean soups, let alone rabbit. OPA! .. or is it Ole!??

What idiots. Worthy of savage Goyaesque caricatures. The Spanish labor minister actually blames Bush for Spain’s economic doldrums? I thought blaming Bush was the exclusive franchise of the Obama administration. Perhaps Zapatero will reestablish some form of the Inquisition, to search out and eliminate those Anglo-Saxon free market heresies in Spain.

  5. 5. Kevin_S

Typical of socialists. They failed, it is therefore someone else’s fault for they, the socialists, are far to smart to ever make a mistake. Nope. So, looks like da One is being a leader in one respect. Blame everything on Bush.

Has anyone ever noticed that liberals and leftist no matter what country they come from, is like watching days of our lives, the drama never ends.

the bubble collapsing in building construction was the same financial construction as in UK and in US, and is causing the ~20% of unemployment in Spain

  9. 9. Ellen K

Wow. So it’s all an “Anglo-Saxon” conspiracy. As I recall, the UK was reluctant to join the EU and lagged on introducing the Euro as currency. Now there are rumblings that the Euro may have to be bailed out because it just isn’t supported. If the UK didn’t want to do it anyway, but joined because of pressure from nations just like Spain, how is it their fault that Spain has such abysmal economic woes? Maybe it has more to do with the nanny state socialism which Spain has embraced. Perhaps it has to do with an economy that is so limited by fees, taxes and rulings from the Spanish government that companies cannot flourish and create jobs. Maybe it is time to buy Spain some mirrors so they can see more readily who to blame for their government’s failures.

Zapatero replaced by Mr Bean, thank you so much for that. There’snot much to laugh at in the news these days, but that did it for me.

This just proves that “Blame-the-West” rhetoric is truly the last refuge of the socialist scoundrel. It’s the last card to be played when nothing else is in your hand.

From Europe, Greece is doing the same thing. Their monetary crisis is based on American speculators. At least that’s the talk … (rolls eyes)

ISTR to “Anglo-Saxon capitalism” was one of the boogeymen of a strainn of early-20th century socialism that led to the form of governance Spain had until, oh, 25 years ago.

I used to think leftists were just optimistic beyond all sense, but now I think they are paranoid and cowardly too. Its never the LAWS OF ECONOMICS AND COMMON SENSE, no, it’s somebody’s evil plan.. it’s some conspiracy of some other race or culture that doesn’t like us, wait, that is RACIST against us that’s even better..

  18. 18. zipity

Wow, what a shock. A socialist government that blows all it’s money on feel good projects, providing unproductive patronage government jobs, thinks it’s current situation is “somebody else’s” fault. Sounds kind of familiar…like Greece, and if Obama has his way, coming soon to the USA.

On February 8, Infrastructure Minister José Blanco said shadowy forces were ganging up on Spain. “Spain is the victim of an international conspiracy to destroy the country’s economic status, and then, the euro,” he said. “Nothing that is happening, including the apocalyptical editorials in foreign media, is just chance.”

    Let’s see: shadowy forces…international conspiracy…manipulation of currencies and economies…control of the media…

    Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

A code word that Blanco did not use is ‘speculators’.

But he will give other interviews.

Hey, I was in Madrid last September for a vacation. Fabulous place.

I for one hope there is an Anglo-Saxon conspiracy to take the joint over and throw those lazy, shiftless, Spaniards out. Except for the women. They can stay. Especially the young ones who hang out in the cafes and bars in the La Latina district. And the cooks, waiters and bartenders. They can stay too. Essential services after all.

But the grizzled old commies, no, they gotta go, maybe the Russians will take them and teach them how real men suffer.

Given how well known it is that Zapatero and his Spanish Socialists hate Jews, I’m surprised he did not blame it on the International Neocon Capitalist Elders of Zionist Cabal.

What can I say, the Spanish people got what they voted for! Who in their right mind would vote a socialist party to govern their country regardless of circumstance and then wonder why they their economy goes broke! Hello, read history .. socialistic policy is to take from the rich to give to the poor, spend and borrow endlessly until no one will lend you any more money. Stupidly, socialistic policy has NO solution when the rich leave the country and taxes reduce significantly so who do they blame? The Anglo-Saxon media!

  26. 26. Arty

If Zapetero says it was an Anglo Saxon conspiracy, I believe him. He wouldn’t lie, he’s a socialist.

The apparent blindness of leftist ideologues all over the world (Massachusetts seems to have temporarily regained her senses) who continue electing these dangerous, inept, statist governments with their associated socialist crackpots over and over again is absolutely staggering and bizarre.

The mad genius of the socialist’s “cultural hegemony” has a bitter fruit. Not only are the people who are made to suffer more and more powerless to affect the change required to oust their new overlords. They’ve swallowed the propaganda that the cure is far worse than the disease rendering the patient, and their freedom, terminal.

Europe is dying under a new totalitarianism flying under the rubric of “tolerance”, social and economic “justice” and multiculturalism. Oh, but it’s not new is it? It’s metastasized from and old cancer, whether it’s fabian, democratic or communist. It stems from the same disease whether deconstructionist politicians, artists, movie-makers and their coreligionists even understand where it came from.

It’s hard to see Europe dying. It’s even harder when so many Europeans see what’s happening but no longer have the power or the inclination to resist its encroachment.

“Zapatero says the centerpiece of Spain’s EU presidency will be the drafting of a new 10-year plan, called the 2020 Economic Strategy..”

“the agriculture minister advised Spanish consumers to ride out the economic storm by “eating rabbit meat”

These two sentences taken together capture the very essence of socialism.

  31. 31. Aussie

This is an excellent article regarding Spain and its moribund economic condition. The set of circumstances in Spain reflect Stagflation – it is the same scenario that was faced by world economies in the early 1970s.

General Franco was a fascist. The Spanish economy had been under Fascism from the time of the Spanish Civil War until the death of General Franco. As a result Spain had a government controlled managed economy.

However, what is truly incredible is that a Spanish minister would dare to blame George Bush for the state of their economy. The fact is that these problems are solely related to the Welfare State, as well as illegal immigrants from Morocco.

(I am still feeling shocked that they blamed Bush!!…. looks like they are following Obama’s example of not accepting responsibility. How very childish)

It’s true Socialists have all the answers.
It’s just that they’re all the wrong ones.

As a Jew, I find it refreshing to encounter a conspiracy theory in which Anglo-Saxons are falsely accused. I hate to let the Spaniards down, but they are wrong. Yep, it’s us again! It’s we Jews who they should be falsely accusing. Hell, they threw every last one of us out of their country a while back, you’d think they would still remember how much sorrow and misery we’ve always caused them. Oh well . . . .

Let them eat cake, let them eat rabbit, let them eat dirt. Spend all the money, borrow all you can, spend that and look around for more. Nationalize companies and unions/banks/insurance companies. Generate electricity with wind mills bought in China, run your machinery and businesses on hope, dreams and promises then confiscate the money and give it to those who don’t work/won’t work and are stupid besides. Zapetero is being emulated by President Slick, our President Slick and the goof balls and criminals of Congress. Has some contagion eaten the brains and good sense of the progressive/liberal/socialist and democrat/marxist idiots worldwide?

    When the going gets rough,
the left goes for the tried & true:
    Name Calling & Pointing Fingers
I’m in NY State, and when Cuomo destroyed
the state’s economy over 8 years, who’s fault
was it? Of course, Ronald Reagan.
When Obama can’t get his lefty agenda off
the ground, who’s fault is it? Fox News and the GOP!
When Spain’s lefty prez (and big Palestinian Supporter, BTW)
destroys the economy, who’s to blame? The US and the UK !
Remember when, just 60 years ago, and going back about 700 years, when all of European “Nations” regularly killed each other on an almost daily basis?
    It’s comin’ back………..

The Spaniards got what they voted for. Nothing is surprising here – put a bunch of leftists in charge, let them enact their socialistic policies, and the economy falters.

But no blame assigned to the Throbbing Brain of Dick Cheney? Did I miss this one? Surely he must have had something to do with all this…

Well, it looks like Spain, as well as Obama, are about to learn why Socialism, Liberalism, and Communism just don’t work in the real world.

Gosh, this is merely the 857th time that a nation has been taught this lesson in the last few centuries. I can’t see any reason why this outcome would not be obvious and predictable to any 12 year old child.

Next week, Zapatero and Obama will learn why they should not touch hot objects, or kick angry guard dogs. Then afterward, they’ll all have some ice cream, and then a nice nap. Weeeeeee, kitty-cats are cute!

    1. Thomas_L…..:

Why sure. Everybody surely knows that America tanked her own economy to gut the euro. Makes perfect sense.

Yes, it does. Spain, like other European nations, has many compassionate social programs. Unlike America, their society has more than hatred and greed. Fear of a good example has always been a prime impulse for the genocidal actions of the American corparchy. From the bombing of Vietnam to the invasion of Grenada to the economic strangulation of Cuba, the devastation of societies that attempt to build themselves upon compassion has always been at the forefront of the American ruling class. If the American economy itself is ruined, it does not matter, for it is only the working classes that will be sentenced to deaths of exposure, starvation, and treatable illnesses, and not themselves. We will see more such economic attacks against Europe by American Wall Street titans, and even possible military invasions if a Republican becomes President, if Europeans continue to defy the American/Israeli imperial juggernaut by supporting policies based on love and compassion rather than hate and greed.

  40. 40. logdon

Following the Madrid bombing, soft-right winger and Blair buddy President Aznar attempted pinning the blame on the Basque separatist group, ETA. As we all know this was a canard to deflect from the fact that AQ had perpetrated the horror visited upon Spaniards in retaliation for Spain’s involvement in Iraq.

The lie proved his undoing and he was out.

So his half assed posturing, one minute bold and fearless, the next evasive and lying did it for him. All mouth and no trousers is, I believe the expression.

So in steps Zapataro, Spain withdraws from Iraq and under the Socialist aegis Spain implodes.

It was the original dithering equivocation what done it, just like Bush who loved his overseas adventures yet allowed the inside creep of Islam to continue as if US Muslims weren’t Muslim at all but some tame foreigners who just loved America as much as the next man.

Add in Bush’s monetary policies of bail outs, huge Government expansion and politically correct ideology and the US ends up with Obama.

Spot the similarity? The frying pan/fire conjunction?

Zapataro goes for broke, spends money he hasn’t got and Spain tanks, jobs evaporate, houses don’t sell and the whole state edifice of socialism is yet again proved unworkable.

Sound familiar? And close to home?

Fortunately for the US, Scott Brown beat all the odds in Massachusetts and by busting the block on the filibuster, Obamacare is shelved. Now the Tea Parties are orchestrating the fight back and the talk is one term Obama.

Over here we don’t yet have our Scott Brown or the individualistic fighting spirit Americans pull out of the hat when faced with what they don’t want to be faced with but the signs are there.

Most Europeans are heartily sick of what is going on all around them. We in Britain are reaching boiling point that not one party will bite the bullet and tell it how it is.

This explains why our current opposition has squandered a huge lead between them and socialist Brown, now at a mere seven points. Cameron is not reflecting the will of the people and given a choice between Labour in Tory clothing, people are just saying may as well have Labour. Defeat from the jaws of victory sums it up.

However its not as bleak as it sounds. The Netherlands is now rudderless and if democracy still means what it says on the label, Wilders will steamroller the opposition.

Sarkozy sees the signs and a real tightening up on the principle of laicity is taking hold.

The rest of Europe including much abused Denmark follows suit in the trend and Spain, if it has any sense will ditch this profligate President toute suite.

Quite a bit covered there but the general impression I’m trying to offer is that there are two enemies at our gates, intertwined and determined to ruin.

They are Islam and socialism. Both with failure as their back story. Both fighting dirty to reclaim what they erroneously assume is their right. Both determined to expand the tentacles in Western society. And both enjoying considerable success in the mission.

Our mission, therefore must be fight fire with fire. Ditch the PC. Ditch the leftists and start the reconquista. Now.

Spain’s (and Latin America’s) animus toward Anglos stems from the historic hostility the Caliphate had for infidels remaining beyond the ebbed borders of their conquest. You will even find it in the non-Roman parts of their language’s syntax.

It won’t go away short of changing their culture.

  43. 43. Truth B Told

Apostle of Love…. “American/Israeli imperial juggernaut”? As with all Progressives it’s always Blame the Jooos!!!

  44. Spain will never change. That would be like asking a zebra to lose its stripes. It just won’t happen. Spain is the ultimate socialist nanny state and all of its massive social-welfare benefits are finally catching up to it. The country can no longer afford the handouts, grants, unemployment benefits, medical benefits, retirement benefits, housing benefits, educational benefits, and labor benefits (such as up to 5 or 6 weeks of paid vacation every year) that are common in all of the European socialist states. Greece was simply the first country to collapse. The “PIGS” states (Portugal, Ireland, Greece, and Spain) are all about to fall and there isn’t much the EU can do about it. The European Union simply does not have the money to bail out all of these countries with failed economic policies. And, by the way, Italy and England are not far behind economically from the “PIGS” countries. Spain can blame whomever they want, but the bottom line is that their own greedy and selfish economic policies got them to where they are right now. The big question is, can anyone or, more accurately, does anyone in Washington want to avoid these same mistakes? Unfortunately, I don’t think so.

  45. 45. Jack Olson

The article said that Spain had recently had a debt-financed construction boom which has now subsided. Sounds like a number of other countries, including the USA. To pump up our economy, overbuild with borrowed money. This can’t go on very long, of course. When you build more houses, more office buildings, more shopping centers than the country really needs, you glut both the real estate and the mortgage market. The seven fat years are succeeded by the seven lean ones. The rescuers of the economy will be the people and industries who didn’t join in the borrow-and-build binge.

I suspect it is useless to try to reason with you, Apostle of Love, but I’ll offer one simple example. The United States has not in any sense strangled Cuba economically, since Cuba is free to trade with all the other nations of the world. That all the other nations of the world decline to do so, at least not enough to make Cuba prosper, implies that Cuba doesn’t offer much that they really want.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
    … I Corinthians 13:8.

Whoever you are, by that metric you are anything but an “Apostle of Love”.

The problem with those “compassionate” social programs is that they, and the economic support necessary for them, works against the desire and motivation to be productive, to the point that an economic death spiral is eventually induced as we are seeing now in Europe.

These programs also charge a heavy toll with respect to liberty … the liberty to make your own socio-economic decisions, as opposed to your “betters” making them FOR you. Not only is that oppressive, it squashes the innovation needed to refresh a society.

And understand that, were it not for “greedy” America and her “nuclear umbrella”, these nations would not have had the ability to spend their treasure on such “compasssion” … they would have had to spend it instead (probably in futility) on defending against the imposition of Soviet Socialist “compassion” upon them.

Has everyone forgotten the real culprit? It was Al Qaeda, of course, which caused Zapatero to be elected by its strategically timed bombings.

I know this article is a little old, but I wanted to add my two cents as I’m English who has lived in Spain since early 2006. One of the biggest problems with Spain is the stupid amounts of money they spend yearly on fiestas, especially on their firework displays. Benidorm alone this year spent an annual of 1 Million Euros on September fireworks.

The Spanish need to come up to date with the times and realize this is the 21st Century not the 19th Century, spending millions a year to let off rockets that last no more than a few seconds once they have gone off. Isn’t very productive in sorting out a countries crisis. Plus with a lot of these Fiestas comes bank holidays, children off school and people working, less hours means less money.

Spain needs to develop a new system, with less Fiesta celebrations, less bank holidays and less money spent on firework displays to help build the countries foundationand wealth.

In a simple economy, say a village in the jungle, if you don’t work you don’t eat. If you are lazy no one will marry you and you won’t have children to look after you in old age.

The world economy relies on people making sacrifice. Higher taxes and low productivity will see the owners of capital moving to the developing world. A place where people get out of bed in the morning for 1 Euro.

Democracy allows the spoilt children to vote in the politician who will give them more. The USA is broke because of this. Greece is just a warm up to what will happen in the USA

The only thing that will galvanize the people to sacrifice is war.

Sadly a 3rd world war is around the corner.

It was Anglo Saxon predatory speculators that ruined economies and invaded countries in the mid east for profit. When they went bankrupt the British and American Taxpayers had to bail out the financial industry. White Collar criminals now own your countries. On Wall Street and the city of London Gamblers and con artists, thieves and vagabonds.
