Sources Confirm: Ohio Al-Shabaab Jihadist Killed in Somalia
Earlier this month ABC News reported that an American man had been killed in Somalia in a gun battle in Mogadishu — identifying him as Dahir Gurey Sheikh Ali Guled — while serving as a commander for the al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab Somali terrorist group.
The following day, Somali Minister of Information Abrahman Omar Osman confirmed that Gurey had been killed, that he had entered the country to fight with Al-Shabaab earlier this year, and that documents identifying him as an American citizen had been recovered.
PJM can now confirm through multiple sources that Dahir Gurey is a former resident of Columbus, Ohio — home to the second largest Somali population in the country.
The first source confirming Gurey’s Columbus connection was Abdirahman Warsame of the Terror Free Somalia Foundation. Warsame made news last year as the first to confirm the identity of an 18-year-old Seattle man, Omar Mohamud, who had conducted a suicide bombing for Al-Shabaab in Somalia which killed seventeen African Union peacekeepers.
Warsame told PJ Media that concerns by the Somali community about Gurey fell on the deaf ears of Columbus FBI officials:
We warned them a while ago that he was seriously bad news, but because of his associations with Somali leaders close to some high-level politicians it became clear that nothing was going to be done about his activities. Politicians talk about dealing with radicalization in the Somali community, but the people they are dealing with are the same ones responsible for the radicalization in Columbus.
Warsame said that Gurey, a truck driver who attended a mosque in Columbus where several Al-Shabaab figures have appeared for fundraising and recruitment, had previously been arrested in Ethiopia but was released because he was a U.S. citizen. He then returned to Ohio, but was allowed by Homeland Security officials to leave the country again to join Al-Shabaab sometime in the past year.
Further confirmation of Gurey’s identity and his Columbus ties came late last week from a Homeland Security official who requested anonymity:
This is yet another black eye for the Columbus Joint Terrorism Task Force, which historically has had a serious problem distinguishing bad guys from the good guys.
FBI Cincinnati field office spokesman Michael Brooks said Monday the agency had no comment.
Just last week, the U.S. Attorney’s Office hosted a forum in Columbus addressing Somali youth radicalization in Columbus. In reporting on the event, Columbus Dispatch reporter Mark Ferenchik claimed: “As far as authorities know, no one has been recruited from the Columbus area.”
This claim, of course, came a week after the initial ABC News report that Gurey had been killed in Somalia.
I lived in the Columbus area for many years (since moved). Some parts are like Little Mogadishu with store front after store front of Somali oriented businesses. Can someone explain to me why we have imported so many Somalis? What vital skills do they bring with them that we don’t already have here? This group in Columbus is very insulate and non-immersing. My son took a cab ride home from the airport from a Somali driver who was rude to him the entire ride, ranting and raving about the US, and wouldn’t take him all the way to his apartment but dropped him off at the complex entrance with the driver claiming he had to rush off to prayer. I’m not exaggerating.
I guess the FBI in Ohio has more important things to do, like monitor right-wing militia groups and people (such as Tea Party members) who disagree with the current administration. As far as I can tell, no right-wing militia group or Tea Party member has bothered anybody, let alone blown anything up or killed anyone. I guess the FBI would be accused of profiling the Somali community in Ohio for terrorism by Eric Holder if they ever arrested anybody, even though several of their members HAVE tried to blow things up and HAVE tried to kill people. Doesn’t the FBI and Homeland Security ever get tired of being wrong?
And yet once more, “Law Enforcement” is the great enabler for this. Be sure to thank them appropriately for the OUTSTANDING job they have done for this country!

Meanwhile, the Columbus city administration is launching an outreach program to the local Somali community to convince young men not to attend mosques which encourage them to join terrorist groups. Said outreach occurring largely at the request of the parents of 14-19 year olds in the Somali community, who see their sons being recruited by such mosques, after they sent them to the mosques in the first place to keep them out of street gangs.
We see here the pattern that is repeated constantly in Muslim communities; whatever the community at large wants, the mosques which are its center are in the hands of radicals who promote violence. Until this changes, Islamist terrorism will never end. And until Western governments admit that this is how Islamist terrorism works, this will not change.
Another constant, here in central Ohio, is that the Columbus Dispatch got it wrong. The Dispatch invariably takes an ultra-”progressive” line on every story, no matter what the facts are. The result is usually that they never realize, or admit, what is really going on until after the fact; because that would require them to question the dogmas of their newsroom, and they are even less likely to do that than the New York Times is.
This is one of several reasons we Buckeyes have called it the Columbus Disgrace since I was a toddler, and you don’t want to know how long ago that was. (Hint; “Tricky Dick” Nixon was debating with JFK over which one of them was going to be the next President of the United States.)

Several yearts ago, 6 members of that mosque(or terror center, which is what it really is) were arrested bt the FBI for being involved in a plot to bomb one of the local shopping malls in Columbus. Actually, the traditional term in the law enforcement community is “Fumbling Bunch of Idiots”. Mainly because the Bureau boys have always been famous for their willingness to blow everybody else’s case preparation to make their own, never mind Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
Not to mention their tendency to blame everybody else when their own case goes south. (But what else would you expect from an agency whose main demand from applicants is a law degree?)
Still, when comparing the competence of the Bureau and ATF, it’s like comparing the OSU Buckeyes to East Overshoe U in college football. Relatively speaking, that is. Worse than ATF in the “competence” department does not exist- I fervently hope.
